Average take-home for tramping

Hi all,

How much do trampers take home in Manchester / North West based. 5 days a week(4 nights out) and generally maximizing hours.Well, Im a new driver and the company is my first one to give me a start after passing my test. Been 3 months with them, working on flat trailers, 4 nights out in 16 plate daf cf super space cab. Good thing is Vehicle is assigned to me, and not used over the weekends, but it has very limited space inside cab and narrow bed. The work requires ratchet strapped on all loads and sometimes sheeting(no extra pay)which takes long time. I take home 550-650 (mon-fri) includes meal and night out allowances. 26.20 for night out, 10 for meal allowances. Is this average pay or way below?

Andrey

I’m assuming that you’re hourly paid? If so you are indeed getting paid for sheeting your loads. If you’re salaried and maxing your hours out then you obviously aren’t. Re your take home; I reckon the £650 take home for a five day week puts you squarely in the average, not the best but certainly way off being the worst.

I would agree with moaster.

Also as a new driver average isn’t a bad place to be

Company pay structure is build up by bonuses, load, daily km, early start(4 am or earlier), late finish bonus(after 12 hrs) waiting time(after 3hrs), quality awards etc… so its not hourly, not salaried. so while strapping or sheeting need to be quick because there is no bonus at those times spent. Im interested in moving to container work, mainly driving and waiting, and similar pay. Now a bit feel like why should work more(I mean load security, sheeting, roping etc.) if pays similar with less other work. Also, last two weeks take home about 530, when there is no job they just make you park up, so you cant build up your bonuses. How container co. s are paying?

Here we go again, take home pay is what you take home for hours worked, and does not or should include what you get for night out money and meal allowance.
If you do 4 nights out and presuming £10 a day meal allowance thats £154 take that of 550-650 its nothing exceptional,as that includes bonus`s I would say thats abit crap

You’re not by any chance at Swains are you?

Money sounds average for what you’re doing. I’ve never tramped, so have no opinions. If it suits you, good for you, go for it!

Word of warning about containers… BORING!!! Seriously boring, doesn’t suit everyone. You really have too much time on your hands with that job.

I guess sitting in your cab, watch movies, read books, take nap or waiting in a drivers room is better than strapping full loads + sheeting under heavy rain, wind, and snow on winter period for about an hour. now its hot and dry, so work is cleanish…but it wont last long. i would be ok with the amount of other work involved if take home 750+ , and lets say containers where you only open rear doors and wait, pays 600… thats reasonable, more work pays more…

i feel so, lets say net pay with night out 550, if you take out the night out pay, leaves you about 450… any day drivers work for this money nowadays??

If you don’t want people to make comments you don’t want to read then don’t post on a public forum.

The clue is in the name, take home pay is exactly what it says, the money you take home. It can be broken down into whatever you like, but you still take home X amount as payment for services rendered.

If you take home 500quid a week for day work and 600quid for nights out, your take home pay for doing nights out is more, simple as that. That extra 100 may well be from a tax free allowance, but it’s still a 100quid and every pound of it has exactly the same value as a pound you earn from “wages”

I will be honest with you. You won’t be watching tv and napping in your cab. You will be in a 6x6 concrete cell with 10 other knuckle dragging numbskulls, who if you’re lucky may speak English. They will be ex sas, and you won’t even have cellphone reception to save your sanity. If you’re lucky, you will be out in 9 hours.

Maybe a little ott, but that’s the reality of box work

No idea mate, I’m in a different part of the world. Ring around a few local firms that would take you on, compare what they pay and you’ll get your answer.

Sorry mate no intention of sharing my wage info with you,…basically because it’s none of your ■■■■ business. :bulb:

night out pay shouldn’t count as take home pay.
as said take you earn 550 inc nights out -100 take home 450.
as you add up you can easily spend your 100 a week .
spend a day roughly

£5 breakfast
£10 for snacks during day then tea or diner if your a southerner
£5 on misc on a shower paper cleaning products for wagon suplies tea bags etc
it all mounts up

i reckon i spend about 15 a day .
if your home everynight your not spending it as your eating whats at home.

but then your saving on petrol
swings and roundabouts

Maxing my hours, night out every night. Offer me 2 grand a week take home and I still wouldn’t touch it. Done a couple of nights out, and hated it. 8 hours per night and done, that’s me. If I trunk, the longest I’ve done is 10hrs. Don’t care if I could be making more.
