Hi terry here,I finished with Jeff in 1976,we were based in a small yard off brick lane before he moved to hackney,I had the first man truck in the uk which was left in teharan, engine was nackerd, then I had a f89 cack hander, could do 80 mph.He had a maltese bloke cant think of his name working for him, also 2meters he was 7foot tall ateddy boy,he died a couple of years ago.Peter anderson, and a tall blonde bloke who beat up 2 turkish border guards at kapiula,I think I have spelled that wrong,I knew Jeffs dad he had a scrap yard off cable st,jeffs name was lipman but changed to lipwin because of a jewish name traverling through the middle east, there was another driver who I met whoes scania 140 was hanging over tihir,9 thousand foot mountain,on the way to bazagan,I went into teharan and came back with one of iran container companys macks to go back to pull him up,scarry.

I remember John Frost - I remember he always wore light blue denim!

Hi Alison

Who was he dont remember him( John Frost ) that is.

Roger

Dont know where he was from or anything but he was certainly a driver in the mid 70’s when I joined Astran and for a while after. I dont know when he left or when you started with Astran - maybe he’d moved on?

Come on now sinbin…are you sure that YOU were actually there■■?

Hi Alison, I did not realise that you were with Astrans in the mid seventies. I first started doing Astrans work as a driver with Frank white in i think 77. i was in the bungalow office on a few occasions but did not get to know any of the girls who worked there. As we never back loaded through Astrans i had no reason to speak with you, also as Frank had several drivers loading for Astrans at any one time you probably dont remember me. We always reported to Peter Cannon and took our instructions from him and Bob Paul. The question that i would like to ask of you is, in the Astran’s facebook pictures first page fourth along there is the photo of three drivers in front of the 140 in the ditch, from the left i recognise ■■■■ Snow, John Willie, now the third one looks very like a young Mervyn King of M&c transport. Now I am not sure if he had returned from australia and formed M&C when this photo was taken and he is no longer able to answer himself, so i wonder if you could tell who it is.
regards Jamie.

To help with your poor memory, Terry. The small yard off Brick Lane was in Hopetown Street. The tall teddyboy was Bernie (aka zwei meter funf) who went on to work for Grangewoods. Jeff’s surname was known to us all who drove for him as Litwin not Lipwin.
By the way, who are you?
I drove for Jeffrey in 75 and 76 and my name is Ron Davies.

Hello Jamie… re facebook photo - who knows with photos that long ago! I did think at first it looks like Trevor Long, but when was this taken? Maybe before Trevor’s days… I dont know. Is it an ‘N’ reg truck? And yes, could be Mervyn… these beards are bad news for identification in later years. If it’s “The famous Tahir incident” as stated, it might be in Ashley’s book - or if not maybe he’ll tell us, but perhaps we’ll have to wait till June anyway to find out if it’s in there or not!!

I dont remember drivers back then as I was upstairs in the bungalow but when I went over to another office, it was a little more sociable.

Also - sorry all, I didnt mean to stir stuff up for Roger - I honestly cant remember when he started - he could well have been there before I started.

Hi I came off ucc brentwood, doing the ice cream to jedda, and the swiss rolls to kuwait, reloading personel effects from qatar,I lived in cable stlocal ,and went with bernie on his first trip, that was about 1975,its a long time now and cant remember most of the drivers names, jeffs brother worked in the office part time he was a black cab driver,I now live in holbeach and still doing part time driving from spalding,to top my pension up,I am now 67,did you come from the east end area? Hi Jamie/Alison: I know all about the 140 in the ditch…silly question really. Yes it’s all documented in the book. The thrid driver is unidentifiable. He was working for Scotts Transport and happened to be there at that time to help Willy. You can see his F88 in the background.
Almost there…read all about it in the book. Coming to a shop, news stand, internet site, truckstop, cafe, layby, and anywhere I can place it…soon!

I really can’t place you Terry…sorry mate. I started for Jeff in March 75. Some names to perhaps jog your memory. Jim Haley in the office. Harry Johnson in the yard mostly. There was a guy who was a black cab driver by the name of Harry Levy but he was restricted to which countries he could drive to (not in his taxi  ). Derek Gull (aka Snout) Alvin Yule, Eric Braid, Orhan (Turk Cypriot), Dale (aka Joe 90), Mike Sargent. Joe the Pole (or was it George the Pole?) owner driver who drove a maroon coloured 140 Scania, had a bad limp. I believe, like Bernie, he eventually went on to drive for Grangewoods.
I didn’t come from the East End…I was a Wembley boy. I drove the left ■■■■■■ 110 Scania when I first started on Simons. I think it was the only Scania Jeffrey ever had.
