Ok, so you give them reasonable notice, and they get agency driver’s to cover your work, what was the point of your day off in regard to trying to force the issue of pay and conditions. The employer has still covered his commitments, and you’ve used some of the annual leave you’re entitled to anyway!

Honestscott76:
[The whole point was in relation to the topic, ‘a mass driver protest’. You were arguing it was not possible due to contractual reasons. I pointed out, ‘reasonable notice’ would satisfy any contractual obligations to any reasonable employer. No employee has to give reasons or justification as to how they use annual leave.

Bloody tablet! [emoji23]

In that case, you might as well get all your colleagues in a Union, organise a ballot in which a clear mandate for industrial action is secured and then give your employer notice as to when that will take place. The action then would have the cover of trade union laws, protecting you against any subsequent action the employer, and saving your annual leave for when you would rather use it.

A mass driver walkout would only have effect if it were wildcat action, which could jeopardise your future employment, as laid out by Juddian so concisely in an earlier post. The moment that you give your employer the required level of notice for annual leave, whether that be 1 week 1 month or more, they then have the opportunity to mitigate the effect of your absence. Unfortunately the notice period for unionised industrial action has the same effect, which is why they struggle to succeed with aswell, only that the union can organise a mass walkout, where as, your employer is unlikely to allow a mass booking of annual leave, even if you give them the required notice :unamused:

I love statements like this ^^^^ . I never feel to need to slag of drivers who are day men, why do they insist on making the assumption that trampers are in some way less than them?

It’s usually the type of person who has never had a night out who comes out with this ■■■■■■■■, or more usually the “yeah I was a tramper for six months, hated every minute of it” type who are too lacking in imagination to make the job anything other than a bloody endurance test! You know the type; will only park in MSA’s or will only park in laybys 'cos they’re too afraid to deviate off route by more than a minute, so consequently spend a miserable night on their ownsome just willing the clock to tick over to 9 hours so they can rinse and repeat again.

I’ll say it once more for the hard of thinking; “just because you personally lack the imagination or creativity to leave your vehicle, explore the local area, or even God forbid to talk to strangers it does not give you the automatic right to pontificate about something you know [zb] all about”

…and breathe…

Actually, I spent 1 week tramping when I first passed my LGV. It was a job and knock system, I had pre planned delivered route, got it down to 4 days by using my Sav. However, I thought hmm, do I want to really live in a tin box, being an unpaid security guard… I thought nope. Do I wanna sleep in areas where it smells of urine. Erm nope… I decided driving was not for me wages poor hours long … so decided not to stay in the trade and moved on to a government employment. Which was 4 on 4 off 12 hour shifts great for family life … now have a degree due to my current employment. Would I drive a truck again in the uk nope. I know it’s a dead end job, no real career prospects no respect no unity between drivers … I’m all right jack so scre the other attitude. working all hours god can send to try and make a living …l still have a London home and now a home in Sydney Australia … never in my life would I of had that if I had stayed driving a truck.

What we need is some french truckers they don,t mess about BLOCK THE MOTORWAYS OFF, BURN SOME TYRES AND BOLLOX TO ALL OF EM! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

France is different, over there the police will just stand around and let them block motorways etc. Try that over here and you’ll have the army towing your trucks into the hard shoulder while you’re dragged off to the nick.

Oh Maoster, what a gross over estimation of his “tramping” experience. Though your foresight was surprisingly accurate  .

Pre planned routes isn’t actually Tramping in the true meaning of that job title, and to cut your own and others throats by doing your allocated weeks work in 4 days, is part of the reason why this industry is what it has become :unamused:

As you seem to despise transport and those who work in the industry, and quite clearly believe you are better than us, why are you even bothering with being on a forum for truck drivers :unamused: .

I’m not saying that those outside the industry aren’t welcome, because I’m sure there are people on this forum who have never had anything to do with transport, but, they are genuinely interested to read and take part in the debates that happen on here. For my part are most welcome

So you had a go and found didn’t like it, fair enough, I really hated tramping in the first few weeks, nearly jacked the job in, but looking back I’m pleased I didn’t, having an HGV licence has taken me to many places including some really far flung places round the World and I’ve done stuff that probably would have never happened if I’d given up in those first few week.

Despite having some very high value goods on board, no boss has ever expected me to intervene if the load was being robbed and at least one made it quite clear he didn’t expect his drivers to intervene, his attitude was insurance can replace stolen goods, can’t replace people.

We’re all different and you found what worked for you , but might not work for everyone as I know my job isn’t for everyone,
I’ve tried many different jobs, both before I drove trucks and between, I even left driving and did a 2 year college course as a mature student, then spent another 2 years in my new chosen profession, but really didn’t like it, at one point I was also offered a nice Civil service job, but although the pension was attractive and the job was really easy, I knew it would bore me, so I turned them down, might not have been a bad move as it seems the job has now been privatised and no doubt is nowhere near a cushy as it was.

Can I just pop this in for the tapatit users like me as the Zombie picture scares the poop out of me…

Hang on, I didn’t say I was better than a person. I said I am above being a driver, that role is beneath me… I had a set amount of deliveries to be made in 5 days … poor planners, I did it in 4 got paid 5 days … you know job and knock. I decided as said jobs not for me … and red tape in government jobs only bothers you if you let it. Mine never did … I enjoyed my job very much … it got me my job here in NSW. So I can’t complain at all. industry is not failing because of drivers alone. Blame big companies whom under cut smaller operators and can run contracts at a loss to get shot of said hauliers.

I fully agree, I have no issues with driving I still drive now in my shift be it a car or van I still carry unwilling customers … . I just don’t wish to do 60/70 hours a week … I would very much love to as a hobby refurb an old truck … my current and previous job, my customers do not like me out my team mates when at work we are a hazard to most.

I fully appreciate, that some love doing the job as a hobby more than employment. Views they see well some are outstanding. Highlands of Scotland etc… that’s a perk which money can’t buy in an office. This is no way in a dig at drivers. It’s a fact that drivers won’t stick together and will look out for themselves
