Anyone know new wages at mulgrew haulage heysham

So how much does Mulgrew pay per hour then?

I’m sure they’re offering a competitive package and salary for professional, conscientious and service driven individuals. Aren’t they part of the, Hurry up Haulage group of companies?

Ssshhh.

Big loss of pride this morning. Went to the shop and the ground was slippery with wet leaves. My feet just went from beneath me, down I went smashed my head and elbow on the ground. I don’t think anyone saw me, I’d have been so embarrassed. You know the, ‘are you alright old un, someone phone an ambulance’ thing. Got back, head seems OK and will keep an eye open for concussion effects, with just a big scrape on my right elbow that Dettol will take care of. Getting older is a sod! :frowning:

Grandpa:

Agreed. Infinitely better than the alternative however.

485 gross, 25 a night out and 10 something OT after 10hrs a day, that was Cairnryan earlier this year according to a mate who worked there.

Grandpa:

Which bloke is that?

The one who was educated in the UK?
Emigrated for over ten years? Went to live in Thailand was it? And when he ran out of money returned to the UK to do a few weeks work before deciding that life here was too tough, so he would take an early retirement. The guy who is currently taking tax payers funds while slagging off those paying those taxes as being underpaid lackeys?
Maybe I’ve got that all wrong?
If so correct me.

Yes, I’ll correct you.

I was educated in the UK, paid for my degrees myself through government loans which had to be paid back. Lived in Thailand, worked in China for ten years. Apart from those periods worked and paid in like everyone else. I paid in, I now take out. Careful Franglais, in the depression that’s coming you too might be joining me sooner than you think.

Should I have stayed in the UK after the 2008 crash and joined in the race to the bottom? You wanted the EU, you wanted European equality? Well, now you’ve got it in your similar Easter European gig-economy, low paid £9-10ph, employment slave market. What’s not to laugh about? We were well and truly had over by people with the same ideas as you who now can’t understand why the transport sector is a dead duck employing professional drivers for pocket money. Give yourself a slap and wonder why there are an estimated 40K people with a HGV licence not using them.

Less a “correction”, regarding previous posts, more a confirmation?

If you are too physically infirm, or mentally unfit to work, then you are quite entitled to claim benefits. I’ve never said otherwise.
All good under the rules.
Is container work too difficult for a 65yr old? I daresay it is for some, but not for others.
I do object to those who can’t even be arsed to try and find something suitable, but we are all made of different stuff, so maybe I should be more tolerant of those who are not as mentally resilient as others.
.
We are off topic of pay at a partucular company, but are discussing attitudes to pay rates being offered. Up to the mods to do as they deem fit?

I have read those Orwell books. Why are you referencing them?
What could a good socialist author, who railed against nationalism, and fought with the International Brigade have to do any of this?

I take it 485 is for a normal 50 hours? So, if it’s 10 after 10 that means near minimum wage. Same as most others and not really surprising.

Ah yes, that good old standby George Orwell. The " go to " author for " I told you so " and " you just mark my words, you’ll see "

Nah, he wasn’t really a ‘I told you so’ author, he was a social researcher who described conditions in the inter-war years.

I’m not too physically infirm to drive, I’m too physically old to do the laboring that goes with the long hours and I don’t need a government to tell me that. I’m bright enough to leave the low paid dead end jobs to you and resilient enough to withstand the nonsense behind a professional driver competitive package of £9ph to pay for a director’s expensive lifestyle. Don’t knock it, education is a wonderful thing.

Why mention Orwell? He details a time of laissez-faire (unrestrained) capitalism in the great depression when people were grateful for a pittance and those that couldn’t keep up were thrown to the dogs. Very similar to today’s gig-economy, when those at the bottom cheer on working till you drop for a minimum wage and can’t understand why everyone else isn’t. Read Orwell again and see if you can spot the point of what he’s trying to say.

What have the mods to do with this? You’re the one who’s kept the topic focused on me. I’m just saying if you’re young enough and still able, get on with it and I’ll cheer you on from the sidelines.

Geesh … are drivers still working for those rates in this modern day?

Some don’t have an option. Its either that or the dole

I realize this may well attract flippant replies, but I chose the dole. Last summer I worked for half a dozen rip-of and scam jobs from both agencies and ‘permanent’ employment and joined the 50 hours for £350pw take home club, clean licence, experience etc.

Coming up to retirement I now get just over £200pw on Universal Credit. No stress, no treated like a dog and I get to bed every night. Let all these rip off haulage companies go bankrupt and I won’t shed a tear for any of them.

Hmmm.
Who is making it all about you?
“I chose the dole”.
If you are queried on what you post why so shocked?
No mention in your first post of ill health or being unfit, a passing comment to stress.

Was the £485 not a recent “pay rise” after Management hit panic button when 7 drivers handed notice in one Friday??
Was it not ÂŁ460 until about early Sept there??

Couldn’t tell you, a good mate of mine was there briefly along with 2 other guys I know and that just what he said it was. Dreadful company to work for, ridiculously easy work. All 3 of them parked the lorries and chucked the keys back one day after Mulgrew tried their bullying with them.

Your age alone should be no barrier to gainful employment. Be that as a driver or summat else. If you’re physically unfit that is different. I’ve known 70 plus drivers who can push pallet trucks around. Certainly not everyone of that age can, but saying you’re too old at 65(?) simply isn’t valid.
No container jobs around?
So many assumptions!
My job is “low paid” and “dead end”?
Been polishing your crystal balls?
Being bright and being educated are not synonymous.
Some very bright people have received scant formal education, and there are some well educated idiots out there.
.
But, I fear we’re off again…
So I’ll go spent some of my pitiful pay in the sort of run down restaurant we ill educated dim drivers enjoy.
Saw the menu earlier:
Couple of kirs, seafood starter, roast duck breast with green salad, cheese selection and probably a chocolate based desert. Chuffing dead end here.
Bye.

No honestly, John. You’re thinking of Orwell’s ‘1984’ which contained his prediction of the future based on the rise of fascism and National Socialism. His works on social research made no predictions, but gave a detailed account of working class life in Paris and London during the depression.

Age is a barrier to physical labour. Everyone knows one old guy of 70 still working, but they’re a bit thin on the ground.

If the vast majority are working for a near minimum wage, I suspect you’re no different, unless you’re one of the ‘ex-SAS’ and ‘loads a money’ characters one often meets.

Yes, you’re right about the non-correlation between bright and educated, but it also applies to the stupid and uneducated and there far more of those around.

You shouldn’t take it so much to heart, but if you think you’re an ‘ill-educated dim driver’ (your quote), who am I to argue? Bread and dripping all round if you had your way?

The world is not black and white Franglais and health isn’t determined by the Birthday you get your pension on, or government rules and regulations. If people have a choice, more and more are getting out of driving. Look at the responses here about Mulgrews and you think it’s some kind of personal duty to work for people like that and we should be proud?

In the coming civil disorder, look out for the little old bloke with white hair because that will be one job I can and will do.
