Hi 3300 John
Called to see you at the show today but you were nowhere around, took a few pics and then spotted you setting off for a road run just as I was about to leave for home and I just about got the camera out before you went past.Wagon looks to be coming along nicely I had a look round her and noticed you have done quite a bit on her already, maybe see you at some future show hopefully.
John.

Hiya i’am thinking of going into marketing them as many people remarked about it…I know i never did any M/E
but i’ll bet that idea has been used before on that job…Yes keith that battery strap did take some finding. i think
it was on the M6 north i saw a pile of them so i turned round at 13 back to 12 and stopped to pick about 6 straps up.
it must have cost the firm 3 gallons of juce he he… i saw some of the millingtons and asked if you was about…
i was in the T shirt place and this lass was having a shirt printed and i saw the T cab photo so i was talking to her
and her boyfriend about you. …Also thanks for the photo’s Stanfield, sorry i missed you lads maybe more luck at
smallwood or kelsall Cheers all
John

Lovely old wagon!

I like this old girl, strong & built to do a job, decent sleeper on her too!

Lovely!

adr:
Lovely!

Hiya this AEC was new to a plant hire firm near newcastle…it was then run by a very good friend of mine John Richards of Buckley… now passed on. i would use her quite regular at Laybond Saltney for shunting trailers for john. after a couple of years David Hopkins bought and restored her…i still have a great friendship with David but don’t see him as much as i used
to. David sold NBF to a chap in Ireland…see the wheel rings are blue this is the colour she always was and is left as
much as i know in rememberence to John …NBF was the first AEC i saw with a 10 speed Fuller gearbox she took a bit
of catching even with a 3300 DAF.

A Fuller 10-speed in a Mandator AV760 would have been a racing pigeon catcher.Never had the chance to drive one, always the AEC 6-speed box in the ones I had.
Well,you can’t have everything in life… :grimacing:

It seems odd that AEC never made a 10 speed standard ,it must have been hard work at 32 tons with only 6 gears and surely hampered performance

ramone I think it was because the fuller only started making inroads in the U K market around 1969/70 and B L were in control of AEC (and the infighting is well known) and they seemed to be more bothered about getting the Marathon out to compete against the Crusader and I would guess that either ERF or Atkinson were the first manufacturers to fit fuller range change gear box most likely the 10 speed R T610. I am sure there are members with a lot more knowledge about this than me will post the correct information.
cheers Johnnie

Wasn`t there a Leyland Group 10 speed available at the time?

There was an AEC 10-speed splitter or a Leyland Group 10-speed semi-auto box available. In 1972 these were de-listed and replaced with AECs own 10-speed range-change.This was discontinued for 8-wheelers around 1975 but influential customers persuaded AEC to fit the Fuller 9-speed range change in it’s place.
All this from Graham Edge’s book.
I drove several Mandators all with the 6-speed box.The only one with a different box was one I got a lift in belonging to W H Martin of Brigg,Lincs. It had the Fuller and you could tell the difference,a great tool.

Do you think it was another case of Leyland hindering a great company, surely if the people at AEC tested both versions they could see the difference in performace

Here you go fellas,

An AEC Mammoth Major with a 760 motor and 13 speed Fuller box, loadad at about 23 tonne, driven very well by a good mate of mine. I took this video a few months ago, turn the sound up and enjoy!

The fuller box made these good trucks much much better.

Hiya …that leyland semi auto box was fitted to leylands as early as 1967…Adams butter had FRE 535E. a Beaver
with a 680 running on the london trunk for many years. They also had a 12 speed two stick Beaver on a F reg.

Nice 1 still going strong after all these years

I was always led to believe that NBF has a Fuller 9509 Roadranger in it. I’m sure the former owner to told me at an AEC rally at Nottingham.
