AEC mammoth major of Tate and Lyle

Love the U-tube video of the Mammoth Major hill climbing in N.Z. I drove this Mercury for about a year in the 70’s, by the time I took this photo it was a yard shunter, I loved driving it though, it would pull a house down.

Hiya …that leyland semi auto box was fitted to leylands as early as 1967…Adams butter had FRE 535E. a Beaver
with a 680 running on the london trunk for many years. They also had a 12 speed two stick Beaver on a F reg.
John

There was 2 types of semi auto box in the Beavers in 67, the originals were 5 speeds with an Eaton 2 speed axle, the later ones were a 5 speed with an internal splitter, these were not as good as the splitter diaphragm used to fail on a regular basis. The other problem was there was no restrictor fitted to prevent the driver changing down to early. We had a holiday relief driver who dropped a gear on the run down Aberford the cam follower came through the block on a relatively new unit.
Guy used to fit the AEC box behind the Gardner 180s

Hello Vic, when I started the warehouse foreman was’nt the happiest chap I ever met, but he was’nt there long so can’t remember his name. The lad that took over was called Geoff, altogether more agreeable, the garage was ran by George Fixter and transport manager was Harry Shields. Regards, Mizzo.

Here you go fellas,

An AEC Mammoth Major with a 760 motor and 13 speed Fuller box, loadad at about 23 tonne, driven very well by a good mate of mine. I took this video a few months ago, turn the sound up and enjoy!

The fuller box made these good trucks much much better.
