A few questions......

Hello dears.

Firstly, apologies if this is in the wrong place on the forum but as this is my first visit, (and I’m from Yorkshire :open_mouth: ), anything can happen!!

As per my username, I left the industry about 8 years ago after quite a few years in a Scanni 141/ low-loader rig in Sheffield carrying heavy machine tools. Fabulous motor without a doubt. The last few years were spent in an artic on general haulage working for Meadowhall transport in Rotherham, (fornerly Wilf Harrison’s). I’ll gloss over the two months I spent at JJ Shepherds. The words “never again” come quickly to mind!!!

As i’ve been away for so long, I thought you folks might help. My HGV licence (no apologies, can’t do with all this “C+E” cobblers. Leave the metric system to the french, thank you) is due for renewal next year when I hit 45. What do I have to do? Similarly, just in case I make a comeback, how do I get one of these new-fangled digital tacho cards?

Talking of which, is there realy such a dire shortage of drivers out there or is it just that no-one wants to ( or indeed knows how to!) rope and sheet?

Last question. I’m in the process of making a trailer to pull behind my big ■■■■ campervan. I’m using a dead caravan chassis onto which I’m fabricating a box. The original plate gives it a mgw of 793 (?) kg’s. I’d like to uprate the weight if poss to allow for the weight of all my scuba diving gear. Where’s the best place for info on such matters, the ministry perhaps?

Thanks all in advance.

Martyn.

Explained here.

Get hold of an application form (details on how to get one on www.digitaltachograph.gov.uk ), fill it in, and send it off with £38.

The form will come with a booklet telling you how to fill it in. There are different procedures depending on whether you’ve got a photocard license, a digital passport, or neither.

I don’t think there’s a dire shortage of drivers who can rope and sheet (or maybe there is, but I think it’s a specialised part of the job nowadays. There is a shortage of experienced drivers willing to work for peanuts.

Just respond to the form they send you about a month before its due.

Yeah there’s a real shortage of good drvers who are capable of roping and sheeting. Thats why you hardly ever see a sheeted load on the roads nowadays, just can’t get them any more. The new breed of truckers are all wooses who don’t know they’re born!!

mike what would you rather do knock youre plums off tramping with a flatbed for £6 an hour or get£9 an hour minimum plus benefits if the money wasnt sub standard there wouldnt be such a high turnover of drivers with haulage companies times change working for stobarts now seems acceptable to the majority :open_mouth: me i have had some of the greatest times on real haulage but its the freight forwarders that make the money for a couple of phone calls the rates are :frowning: get me £9 an hour on haulage id quite happily go back

Are you mad, you could do some serious damage doing something like that. Use something a bit longer than a match, that way you won’t get burned.

First place to look is on the sidewall of the tyres and check what they show as a maximum weight, then explore possible replacements that will carry a heavier weight.

The same with the suspension units. Identify the manufacturer, and check their recommendations.

Yeah, i always do that on my daily checks!!

Just a quick one to say thanks for the (sadly few) serious replies.

With regards to the remainder, it’s a shame, but no surprise, that even driving forums seem to have their share of idiots. The greater shame is when admins jump in with their two penn’orth of dross.

I now understand my dad’s reaction when I received my provisional HGV licence 20 years ago. If he had a computer and he looked at some of the rubbish on these forums (fora?) he’d no doubt give me his finest “I told you so” look…

and could I and all the other professional drivers, with a sense of humour. plead with you to not only renew your licence but once more return to the industry as apparently you are the single most professional driver this sceptered isle has :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:
