770s willy waving

770? Pah! Wouldn’t get out of bed etc etc zzzzzzzzz

During the mid 80’s we were trialling the new Scammel Commander which was fitted with the same engine as the Challenger main battle tank. That produced 1200bhp. It was quickly decided by the MOD that letting a bunch of feckless teenagers loose with that would be what they technically termed “a bad thing”. It was swiftly downrated to around 660 bhp, still awesome for it’s day.

The first full power and non speed restricted ones were eye watering!

Not saying where it happened but a couple of Irish lads decided one night to see what a 730 would actually do , so the limiter was disconected , trailer dropped and a suitable piece of tarmac found . GPS was reading 125mph when they ran out of straight road and had to back it off a little - they reconned she was still pulling and there was a lot more there if anyone was daft enough to keep the foot down . :grimacing: :grimacing: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Not that impressive then after all.
I’ve heard of Transcontinental Fords Big Cam ■■■■■■■ doing the ton downhill fully freighted.in the 80s .as long as you could stop a tyre blowing.

I’m back on here again Luke, but keep her willy in yer kecks ffs mate.

robroy:
Wow :open_mouth:
I can just imagine you sat driving that thing, loaded with a [zb] big [zb] off Challenger on the back, doing 70 down the Autobhan, ■■■■■■ up on Bavarian beer with glazed eyes, a big vacant grin on yer face, and your beret on the wrong way round.
As Jakey would say…‘Potential Carnage’ .

For once Jakey would be correct! (even a broken clock is correct twice a day)

80…

Showing on the clock (not tacho) of my Leyland Marathon on the M3.

75ish on the unlimited rental F10 also on the M3.

■■■■ I miss those days.

I’m confident others went faster.

Or dropping down into Warcop past the tank ranges, you could see a clear 10’’ of daylight under the trailer wheels

The above statement never happened, as the tank in question was a Cromwell…

So… how do you disconnect the limiter and then reconnect without the need for an authorized workshop?

Anyhoo, a simple drop of common sense would tell the amount of power a truck makes is not relevant to it’s top speed. It’s limited by the redline. Any old six-cylinder of any make can reach it really, I’d hazard a guess it would be a bit more comfortable with a trailer though. Even with an OD box, 1150rpm@55, 125mph would take it well into red.

It’s the gearing that would determine its top speed, also aero dynamics.

Like I said, any old six-cylinder, as the gearing is the same and so is the aerodynamics. They will all reach redline without a trailer.

According to this the governor cuts in at around peak power 1,900 rpm = 96 mph with the highest final drive option.

That is still bleedin quick at that engine speed.

That is some bullshine right there.
No European truck would have tall enough gearing to go at 125mph regardless of the engine.
It would have to be free wheeling in neutral.
I have an 18spd Fuller with overdrive and .336 rear axle ratio which gives 70mph at 1375rpm and on the limiter at 80mph it is still only doing 1600rpm.
Even so, it would be way past the max rpm at nowhere near 125mph.

Yes that be a good story for the RDC waiting room! Yes i would thought the gearing would be wrong

Unless it had Eaton 2 speed

In the seventies it was well known the Irish fellas fitted diffs out of coaches

Not trying to “steal the post” but since the subject are V8 engines/ high power, I would like to ask what sort of mpg/ maintenance costs V8 Scanias compared to other motors .
Lately I been driving 2x 106XF 460, 1x 105XF 510 , 2x MAN.TGX 440 .
MANs & 106XF around 10.7mpg , older high mileage 105XF 11.4mpg.
It seems the extra bit of power from older 105 does pay off, not to mention the fact that new XFs are dead boring to drive with new auto box system that keeps overriding when trying to change to M :unamused:
So my question is, what sort of power is actually the best of both worlds ?
Perhaps around 600bph ?

TheUncaringCowboy:
Plenty jealousy coming out here, “770 is ridiculous, too much power, not needed, whinge whinge”.

A new gearbox as well, be interesting to see how the fuel figures are, Euro 6 730s aren’t bad.

Driven most other V8s, looking forward to a go of one of these.

What sort of mpg you were on with the V8s bud ?

I think 90-100 mph was/is the usual bench mark for the ‘Bull Haulers’ and the other cowboys there ?.
That’s about as quick as any 30t + truck gets.
They might have managed to defeat the limiter in this case but the numbers increased every time the story got told and in this case it hits the governor before the 100 mark.

Having said that a 730 with double overdrive 18 speed and the highest 2.59 diff shown there on a deserted Interstate all bets are off as to whether the tyres will survive long enough to reach the governor at 35t.
Can I be the one to test it.

When I was a boy, Bedford TK, 6cyl, Duple coach gearbox, and 2 speed axle, 75mph, but it wouldn’t stop…

ok. As Wire said this is loaded at 36tn just dropped half gear on 13spd . Pic shows revs and road speed . But I have to say though I drove an x o/o truck that had been parked for a while ( x Canada USA hog hauler)boss bought for a spare and I had it at 100mph one early morning had an overdrive 4 spd thing bolted into gear stick . Never again though I had them neuter it down to 70 when back in yrd.
