770s willy waving

0 intrest in Scanias for a simple reason - when I drive one I get a sore back from the seating position . But and if anyone can enlighten me I’d be gratefull lately there seems to have been a shift from 730 's to 650’s - why ? It seems to me that the 650 is the “one” to have now .
Give it a couple of months and Volvo will announce a 780/790/800 hp and the world will continue spinning as before . Just to be clear I want a 750 Volvo - I may not have any real need for one , it may not make sence but I really don’t care . I’ve always had the 12 or 13 liter lumps and I have never in 23 years of driving got a drive in a 16 liter .

Supposed to pull nearly as well as the old R730 but with excellent fuel returns. 9+ mpg seems to be easily achieved.

Driven a few older FH16s, 600 and 660 I think and a V4 750. Was disappointed in the 750 after all I’d heard about them. Think the V3 was the better one, last of the good Volvos in any case.

I quite fancy the Volvo 540 the lomas drivers tell me at full weight in these hills it’s a real competitor to the V8 .

Coupled to a dual clutch probably the best truck I’ve ever driven

we have 3 540’s -
one on full air no dual clutch - 25 year version
one with dual clutch no front air suspension - 25 year version
one with no front air suspension and no dual clutch (mine )
The dual clutch has given nothing but problems was returned to the dealer at least 4 times and at one stage it was looking like the dual clutch was to be removed for a standard clutch . The gearbox was rebuilt twice and the last diagnosis was a bent input shaft . It’s still not working properly according to the driver . Its been that big of a problem the boss has decided no more dual cluthes . We have heard of at least another 8-10 with the same problems and no real support or answers from Volvo. Its a great idea - when it works but if its not working properly then theres no point really

Volvo make a V8.

You mean they wish. :unamused:

Watch this space.Volvo ask for help of CAT to increase the stroke of the D16 to 183 mm then reduce the bore to 138. :smiling_imp:

Ah yes because one of worlds biggest truck manufacturers can only dream of developing a V8. Somehow something tells me if they wished they probably would. But then they don’t have Everything Expert Carryfast at the helm so who knows

Let me guess the two sperate input shafts aren’t as strong as one single one but take the same load ?.

If they take that 138 x 183 option they probably won’t need a V8.But 1,000 is a lot of horses compared to 750.

They do make a V8, uses GM block, pushes 400+bhp, Carryfast needs to Google Volvo penta. Off you go carrier bag.

400 hp ain’t exactly going to cut it for this job even if you get it type approved for road use.

Much better to use the 183 mm throw crankshaft in the D16 and in doing so at least try to match the 16.4 Litres of Scania muscle that they are up against.

You best submit your detailed engineering proposal to Volvo, their extensive engineering department is clearly no match for Chief Trucknetter Carryfast

They were probably already telling their boss what it will take before I’d even realised that CAT had such a crankshaft in its armoury.
But if not it would be great fun playing them off against each other for a very small token fee.A tenner will do. :smiling_imp:

Has anyone got any hard evidence of a 800 hp Fh16 on the horizon?

Big Bear:
Has anyone got any hard evidence of a 800 hp Fh16 on the horizon?

Probably moot unless anyone has any hard evidence of a 1000 + hp marine spec D16.
By all accounts Scania have sold its whole production run of 770’s for a year in Irish exports. That’s just loose engines for retro fit. :smiling_imp:

NB12:
Next up will be an Iveco S-Way with a cursor16 under the cab.

Or bring back the iveco v8 that was some piece of kit cheers Ray

The classic…

‘It’s badged as a 420 but it’s actually a 600, but I embarrased a 700 last week in the Alps by overtaking him uphill through a tunnel’.

Such a popular chap.

You be amazed, or not, at how many use to try and race me, usually off toll booths or lights, Dublin port tunnel was often one. R500,s were most common but even had 460s and 440s sometimes…as if they have a chance with 300 horses less. Though no doubt some do the old RdC stories ‘I embarrassed a 750 once’ For the record in 3 years no one ever embarrassed me. Not even 730s. Having driven several examples of both 750s and 730s (get me willy waving, where’s Robroy when you need to ■■■■■■■■ harass someone) and the big Volvo 16 litre generally does beat the mythical V8. (Waits for Carryfast to spout a load of nonsense telling me why I’m wrong and why his theoretical nonsense beats real world)

770? Pah! Wouldn’t get out of bed etc etc zzzzzzzzz

During the mid 80’s we were trialling the new Scammel Commander which was fitted with the same engine as the Challenger main battle tank. That produced 1200bhp. It was quickly decided by the MOD that letting a bunch of feckless teenagers loose with that would be what they technically termed “a bad thing”. It was swiftly downrated to around 660 bhp, still awesome for it’s day.

The first full power and non speed restricted ones were eye watering!

I can just imagine you sat driving that thing, loaded with a ■■■■ big ■■■■ off Challenger on the back, doing 70 down the Autobhan, ■■■■■■ up on Bavarian beer with glazed eyes, a big vacant grin on yer face, and your beret on the wrong way round.
As Jakey would say…‘Potential Carnage’ .
