Whilst in the Volvo dealers, there was a gentleman there from Volvo Warwick, and he explained the reason Volvo have stopped at 750, is down to tyre technology, tyres haven’t kept up with the torque increase available, also the gearboxes will need some more strength,
Someone trying too hard to make himself interesting really
Neither of those theories hold water.
I will pass your observations on to the said Person, next time I’m at Volvo’s, . Thank you for your feedback

Old git from the old lorry section here, butting in.
770bhp is an interesting choice of power output- you would have thought they would want to be first with 800bhp. There is no technical bar at 770bhp, as far as I am aware. I would guess that Volvo’s 6 cylinder engine is a bit stronger in the block than a V8, hence their marginal lead, over the past few years, but a few horses here or there is nothing. Volvo will, without doubt, release an 800bhp FH16 within months, and get a notch on the bedstead of lorry engine history. I wonder why Scania won’t steal the crown, even if only for a few weeks? Do VW have shares in Volvo Trucks, as well as Scania?

But so far can only seem to find 750 max for the Volvo in Marine applications too but 1000 + for Scania V8.

Carry on googling CF
As I said the Scania V8 is a formidable piece of kit just based on the maths and don’t need google to tell me that.Only to confirm the numbers are correct.
My advice to Volvo would be to have a word with CAT about a 183 mm throw crank to bolt into the D16 if it will fit. There’s nothing as much fun as a horsepower race between two local teams.Meanwhile Anorak is dusting off his AEC V8 drawings he thinks he can make it work and steal the win.
Can’t say I’ve ever been interested in horse power but more in torque and litres ,I find a 14 litre ■■■■■■■ rated at 320 or 380 ect more attractive than any V engine .
I do love 5 cylinder engines and have never been so disappointed with anything as much as the V6 sprinter I recently bought new .

0 intrest in Scanias for a simple reason - when I drive one I get a sore back from the seating position . But and if anyone can enlighten me I’d be gratefull lately there seems to have been a shift from 730 's to 650’s - why ? It seems to me that the 650 is the “one” to have now .
Give it a couple of months and Volvo will announce a 780/790/800 hp and the world will continue spinning as before . Just to be clear I want a 750 Volvo - I may not have any real need for one , it may not make sence but I really don’t care . I’ve always had the 12 or 13 liter lumps and I have never in 23 years of driving got a drive in a 16 liter .

I quite fancy the Volvo 540 the lomas drivers tell me at full weight in these hills it’s a real competitor to the V8 .

I have one - it truly is a great piece of kit - so different from the 500 I had before it - a lot more torque low down it just digs in hangs on and pulls . Without doubt the best truck I’ve driven in the last 23 years .

There’s no love lost between myself and the people who work at dealerships. Mostly clueless, usually arrogant, rarely above useless. Dealerships don’t pay enough for people worth their salt to stick around, thus can only employ “geniuses” who come up with aforementioned trollop.
No internal combustion engine produces max torque at idle, so there’s obviously no problem with tyres. The gearboxes on the other hand could be a right hassle, if this was 1993 and there was no possibility to limit torque at certain rpm range with five minutes and a laptop.

Used to run with a Volvo 540 at the same weight through France and when pulling away would leave my 620 behind everytime, due to how good the I shift was, would be interesting to see how the new Scania gearbox compares

2,500 lb/ft of Scania V8 torque is a lot more than 1,850 lb/ft of N14 torque let alone 1,400 lb/ft of Big Cam torque.
