Leyland super beaver

ANYBODY SHED SOME LIGHT ON THIS OLD LEYLAND SUPER BEAVER HBO 50 ONLY DONE 21000 MILES THE 600 IS LIKE A SWISS WATCH

Hi,
Don’t know anything about that motor, though bo is a welsh registration.
Regards andrew.

It looks like the sort of machine a big bus company would have bought new and kept in the corner of a garage for years. The Leyland badge on the grille is the type used on Leyland buses in the 1980s, by the look of it. What a find.

red with a blue chassis !,didnt suttons have this colour scheme ?

I think it could have been one of the NCB mines rescue vehicles later modified.

HBO 503 AND 504 were used in South Wales, don’t know about 50. There is a photo of one preserved on Flickr.

According to the comments on Flickr, both HBO 503 and HBO 504 were used as ballast road locomotives for
pulling drawbar trailers.

VALKYRIE.

Excellent research, Valkyrie.

One of them at Tyne Tees rally about fiteen years ago.

Now, here’s a rare one!

It’s a Super Beaver assembled in Ashdod, Israel in 1972 with a locally produced cab.

I could never quite work out, with Super Beavers and Super Hippos, why some had a flat steering wheel while others had a steeply raked one. Was it to do with being 4x2 or 6x4, or could they be ordered with either? Robert

It might just be a different series ie the older ones might have had a more upright steering wheel. Here is a photo of one of the last Super Hippis ever to be delivered and it seems to have the same flattish wheel as the Super Bear. I will have a look at the data sheets when I locate them.

This model is a 30EH.7AR

If you can find the build specs I’d be interested in the diff ratios.
There’s a lot of hub protrusion (unless she’s on 900 tyres) which in my experience meant the extra large hubs which were the “low loader” 38mph ratio.

We would normally fit 11.00x20 on these but there might just have been a shortage of these then we would very reluctantly fit 10.00x20 with a higher ply rating. The way these guys overloaded them would mean any 9.00’s wouldn’t last long.

Hi Cargo,

Didn’t find the specific Hippo/Beaver sheet but found the performance summary for all the old models with various GB and diff options from the Leyland Sales manual. Here they are the gradients and top speeds for the two models - both with the 7 speed wide ratio box on 11.00x20 16 ply tyres. First is in top then speed on O/Drive, in MPH.

S/Beaver (18EB1CR, 18EB2CR,18EBCR)
4.82 - 1 in 3.9, 56 and 73.5
6.06 - 1 in 2.9, 45 and 59
7.74 - 1 in 2.3, 35 and 46

S/Hippo (30EH5R, 30EH6R)
4.82 - 1 in 6.7, 56 and 73.5
6.06 - 1 in 5.2, 45 and 59
7.74 - 1 in 4.0, 35 and 46
8.75 - 1 in 3.5, 31 and 42

S/Hippo (30EH7R)
4.82 - 1 in 11.5, 56 and 73.5
6.06 - 1 in 8.7, 45 and 59
7.74 - 1 in 4.0, 35 and 46
8.75 - 1 in 3.5, 31 and 42

It says also that the 8.74-1 ratio is not available if a trailing axle is fitted with either the 680 engine or a crawler gear.

There are two pages of this so I will scan them and email them to you.

Does anyone know the location of this lorry now. It was my dads. He recovered from Wales and did the work on it at his own garage. It is HBO504.
