Van driver earning more than class 1 driver

I know what you mean. I just class 2 ATM and whilst in Newcastle the other day I got talking to a bloke working for Iceland home delivery (3.5 tonne van) and he was on £1 per hour more than me! I am considering doing my class 1 but for a quid an hour more and the £2000 upfront cost I likely won’t bother.

I get £8.75PH for upto 40 hours and 40 hours + is £13.70. Usually do about 50 hours and take home about £400 a week but the money it crap.

I know three people that work in the NHS, everyone of them at some time has had a rant about other staff, who aren’t really ill, yet will take 6 months off on full pay. Then mysteriously get better just before the 6 months are up.

I used to know a lad who’s mother in law worked in an office role for the NHS. Without fail, she would have a fortnight off ‘sick’ every year when there was nothing wrong with her. Even more scandalously she genuinely saw nothing wrong with doing so. Meanwhile, the local rag has discovered that each NHS employee at this particular trust averages three weeks’ sick time per year. I can appreciate those who deal with patients having time off, but it includes office staff and all of those who never see a patient.

…probably worsened by the fact I live in a benefits town.

Me too, and heaven forbid that someone should suggest that any of the payments that have seemingly become an entitlement to many people are reduced or cut altogether. Angry outrage and the inherent sense of being victimised, both of which are so popular around here, come straight to the fore. It’s a shame that so many of them do not show as much interest in getting off their arses and bettering themselves, rather than suckling the taxpayer’s teat, but it was ever thus.

As far as the firm mentioned in the o/p goes.
It aint just a recent thing, they have never been fanous for paying the best wage those lot.
Bottom of the barrel imo. :bulb:

Ramage for damage.

Security duties■■?

If anyone wants to grab the load, well carry on as I won’t fight anybody who does.
I will sit in my cab and report it or be asleep anyway.

It is your presence in the vehicle that provides the deterrent.

Not in my experience it isn’t, I had a couple of scrotes in my trailer at The Fox Colsterworth about 10yrs ago.
It was still shut after Xmas hols, but well lit up.
The thing that I noticed more than anything else, was the total disregard they had for the racket they were making, …as if they had a right to be in there ! :open_mouth:

I was on for Brit European, so had a kooi on my back doors, so the only way in was through the front ‘headboard doors’ which meant them climbing on the back of my unit, to which they just bounced around not caring.
If I had been really brave I would have got out, locked the bastds in, and carried on…I was shipping out to Calais, which would have been nice for them. :smiling_imp:
If only eh?
I wasn’t sure if there was another guy in their van, and/or they could have been carrying knives, also it was snowing hard so if things had gone ■■■■ up I could have been left and froze to death, so I just (wisely I reckon) stayed in cab, and just started up the engine until they (eventually) [zb] ed off. :smiling_imp:
I had no desire to be a (maybe stabbed) hero. :bulb:

It’s still a deterrent, even if it’s not 100% effective in every single set of circumstances. Same can easily be said of any other “nightwatchman” arrangement. The presence of the man (whether he is in a portakabin or cab) provides some degree of “security” for the property concerned as it does deter some criminals (even if it simply diverts them to attack another location a short distance down the road).

Well as I said, not in this case it wasn’t, it was absolute 0%.
They got in leisurely walked around, discovered there wasn’t a hope in hell of getting a big heavy roll of carpet out of the front doors, and (again leisurely) ■■■■ ed off after about 5 minutes of my engine running.

Say what you like mate, but if these type of pond life ■■■■ bags want to turn you over, they will :bulb: … end of.
Also in extreme cases break into the cab to get to the driver, they neither give a ■■■■, no have any respect for other people’s property. :bulb:

18 hours■■? let them crack on daft ■■■■■

Put yourself in the shoes of the boss, the only cost he has any control over is pay, profit margins in transport are tiny.

I’m sorry to say if you involve yourself in the for profit game don’t expect any better particularly when you live away from the major population centres, only specialised or own account work goes a decent life/income.

The for profit sector was finished years ago Stobarts Wincanton and Downill saw to that, plus the decline in manufacturing and the flood of cheap labour from the east get yourself on the Supermarkets thats where the best work is.

Indeed there is a profit to be had, the profit is increased by paying such poor pay, if you can get a driver for £8 why would you pay more? these people don’t operate on a charitable basis.

My point is stay away from the for profit sector if at all possible.

Am I missing something here but surely all trucking jobs out there exist to make a profit

“for profit” AKA “hire and reward” as opposed to “own account” where a company has its own vehicles that are run as part of its own operation.

It’s much harder to get into the better paying jobs as rather obviously, the drivers currently employed in these roles do their level best to keep them.

Easier to have a cavalier attitude in a crap job as there isn’t anything to lose. Unfortunately though, sooner or later you start running out of jobs to go to :grimacing: Wages will only rise in LGV roles when there is a genuine shortage of candidates.

Why do you think Stobartski are all of a sudden interested in training drivers? It’s a win-win situation for them. Undercut the training companies and get more candidates passed. Add in a ’ guaranteed new pass interview ’ for hundreds of vacant positions and hey presto, more bums on seats and plenty more to come…

Yes, I believe you are missing something:

Fred Bloggs haulage effectively has one aim - for the costs of running his fleet to be less than the money he gets from his clients for transporting their goods. He only makes a profit if the cost of running his trucks is less than the income they generate and he won’t stay in business very long if his costs are greater than his income. The prices he can charge (and thus the wages he can pay his drivers) are pretty much dictated by what the competition charges.

His cousin runs Joe Bloggs bathrooms. The expense of running his fleet of lorries is just another cost to his business - his profit comes not from transport but from the expertise of his fitters and designers, the quality of his service to his customers and in selling the bathroom fittings at a better price than what he paid for them. While he naturally wants to keep his costs down, he can afford to pay a better rate to his drivers in order to recruit and retain the best he can.

There is in some, not in others. I know people who earn less than their drivers.

If there is so much money in it, why not set up Beetlejuice trucking and go and pay your drivers £20.00 an hour. With all the profits, you should be retiring in a couple of years.

Why do people who sit in offices think they are worth more than Grafters ? Before you posted this I thought you seemed a reasonable guy ,But £20 p.h Are you drunk ?Stupid comment.

Dumper drivers on basic forward tippers get £15-17 no Cpc no nonsense and no whining bosses .
And I don’t have enough knowledge of whining to set up as a haulage boss .Not yet anyway .

Edit - You do need a cscs every 5 years to drive a dumper my mistake .

If a company is only surviving by paying crap wages then it’s time to give up.

Drivers are agreeing to poor wages, hauliers are agreeing to unrealistic rates and the companies who need the goods are improving their margins.

If companies stood their ground and said no then it would have to go up but no there’s always some firm.who thinks they can compete at that price. They last a year or maybe two then have to throw towel in with the contract. Then the next idiot says he can do it and on it goes. Supplier wins, transport company works for nothing.

You are the one saying that there’s money in haulage. If there is that much, then you can pay more obviously.

Driving, and I speak from experience, is infinitely less stressful than managing. And there is absolutely no fun in management. Every year I give myself a small bonus, because otherwise there’d be about 5 drivers earn more than me. Small bailiffs, we really don’t earn that much. No lies!
