Once again Dean, Thank you for the pic! Pete

9F96C476-6AF1-4920-83E9-160C61B4D12D.jpegA rare picture of a Stowtime trailer there behind Turners. Stowtime was set up by a group of local business men in an old WW2 ammunition’s factory that was essentially a collection of tunnels carved into the hillside near Buxton and which just happened to be the ideal temperature for storing wine, cheese etc.
It was serviced by a gaggle of local hauliers including one Richard Lomas and his son who just about elbowed all the others out on their way to becoming Lomas Distribution.

It was later purchased by Salvesen and passed to Norbert, it currently stores overspill for Buxton Water amongst other items.

Thank you for the information Limey, are there some more tunnels up near Buxton that are used for airplane technology, seem to remember doing a job there and the lad said they used some tunnels for crash investigation and ejector seat testing? Cheer’s Pete

Good knowledge there Mr Webb, especially seeing as you’re NOT from the locality!

Pete, the HSE have a multi million pound complex up there where many weird and wonderful things take place. I remember way back when the fire occurred at Bradford City, there was a complete mock up a football stand which stood for months. I reckon that would have been where you found yourself.

Due to the sites history it wasn’t a rare occurrence for old shells to turn up and a local eccentric tyre fitter who ran a little operation up there and had a great interest in WW2 regalia - sometimes walking around in full German Army uniform - had a large collection of them sat in the window of his fitting shop. Quite a contrast to the day a “randomer” found one and took it to the HSE leading to a full site evacuation, road closures and calling in of the bomb disposal unit!
