Local lads around here will recall a character like that Dennis, had a job to pass a pub! Be interesting to hear about Robsons, similar story to Alf Sutton I imagine?

Pete.

during the seventies robsons were everywhere just like a1 transport/ackworth-onward/suttons/etc etc, they got bought out by united glass as I remember in about 1982,i know because I fell out with the transport manager at onward Castleford, and robsons wanted a tramper based at the glassworks in Castleford and I got the job lol, only stuck it 3 months I soon went back to onward, better money, better wagons, another good old firm spoiled!!!royhebb2

I always remember when riding shotgun with the old man in the 70s seeing the famous border fleet on the road.
They were always in the ici plant at billingham, and as we all know the famous border name was emblazoned across the front of the vehicle so you could see it from a distance, the fast lot were never nor will they be in the same league as the legendary robsons of carlisle the number ONE carlisle haulier

Well said , Robsons were the top hauliers in Carlisle with their fine fleet of Fodens of all Marques long before the word logistics came on the scene & of course ESL, Regards Larry.

THIS ONE FOR DENNIS

Your a pure Gentleman “Dai bach”,That D1000 would more than likely be delivering Carlisle made textiles around the “sweat shops” of the east end,oh! and I wonder what engine that 4 wheeler Foden would have had in it ? A Stroker or a little Gardner,I wonder  Thanks Dai,Cheers Dennis.

Sorry Dai I don’t know if they were sisters or not but they could very well have been as all of them origionated from the N.East area above Carlisle towards the Border,up towards Newcastleton way,I can’t just recall the name of the village where Stan origionated from,I wonder if it was Heathersgill ? Leyland 600 could probably shed some light on the matter.Cheers Dennis.

thanks, I heard some good stories about the robsons, I chap across the road from me used to thumb a lift back home to workington with the driver.

It’s a pity there are no shots of George Flenley who joined Robsons from Liverpool BRS at the time of de-nationalisation in the early/mid 50’s and became Robsons MD.It was George who was responsible for Robsons dramatic growth during the 50’s and 60’s,I believe Stan was more involved with the engineering side of the operation and the purchasing of the motors (Fodens and Fords),the other main Board member was N.T.O’Reilly who ran an accountancy firm in Penrith and who also specialised in all matters Transport including dealing with the Licencing Authority as well as Vehicle financing(which Robsons needed plenty of during their growth!) Although George and N.T.O’ had large shareholdings in Robsons relative to their major involvment in the business Stan was always the majority shareholder and ultimately “The Boss” at all times.Cheers Dennis.

what happened to robsons, did they go bust or get taken over. jack preston.

They were bought out by United Glass and that was when their conection with Metal Box went “down the drain” (conflicting packaging systems !) and we all know who squirmed into MB at that time !! Herbert Nettleship from UG took over as Robsons Boss and I believe their centre of operations was transferred to Flitwick in Bedfordshire.Cheers Bewick.

Anybody remember wellesbourne.flitwick .Harlow.st Helens.and queenboro depots some of Robsons depots.
