Rates 2018

And what do you think is a fair rate for daywork ?
I think £500 for a 10 hour shift 200 mile

I think your selling yourself short? There is good sub contracting work at the moment, again you have got to look for it, won’t be in the back of a magazine.
An example my truck collected £600 for 53 miles started 0730 finished 0430, nothing specialised either. On a good day it can pull in £780
I personally thought sub contracting wasnt vaiable in the long run, however there is some good work which is.

I like you , You young trucker !!

You understand that is all about having ambitions for your business and getting to places that you want to get to .
I dont normally comment on this site but visit it alot . I feel compelled to comment when I see posts on here that indicate that this is all there is and that this industry is a race to the bottom where small companies get done over and then should just appreciate the work .

Your breakdown of things should be the norm and not just a lucky deal

I think we would all agree that it would be very nice if rates like that where the norm but do you really think that those rates will ever be attainable by all owner operators. There are apparently rates like this available for some but in over 30 years I have never come across them, perhaps I am a poor businessman or simply lack the ambition to expand and search out new opportunities.
I think it extremely naive to think that these rates will be available to all and to imply that anyone working for lesser rates, and making a decent living,is leading a ‘race to the bottom’ is offensive.

We are all in business and in reality governed by the laws of supply and demand and the prevailing economic climate.

The most difficult job of all is running your business and doing the work and trying to find opportunities you have to wear so many hats and you cant do it all

This is exactly the problem I have.

What sort of work are the rates quoted above for?

Wally, great question but it appears no answer forthcoming [emoji846]
I have generally steady subcontract work that grosses £3000 p/w for on average 1500 miles burning 800 litres.
Yes I am profitable, but not to the amount IMHO that I should be attaining considering £155000 invested in truck and trailer.
Not to mention 3 x 15 hour days/ 9 hours off and maxing out remaining days.
As for setting my rates…dream on!
Did a job this week 50 pence per tonne less than 2 years ago ( at which point derv was 5 ppl cheaper [emoji15][emoji35] )
Asked my customer to investigate, they are regularly asking but getting the classic “ we can get someone else if your not happy with rates “
Yet at same time farmers are under the impression that there’s insufficient trucks available due to driver shortages [emoji849]
This is bs from grain merchants as they are struggling to find customers for the grain that they are contracted to move by an agreed date.

Thus always looking for the next opportunity.

Played email ping pong with a Belgium potential new customer until negotiations broke down when they revealed their present UK subbies grossing £2-2300 per week, this Possibly with their own trailer and maybe even specialists discharge equipment. ■■

I put my weekly ALL in costs at about £1600 PLUS derv.

Don’t think they were offering a 750 miles week [emoji56][emoji56]

Hey ho
Back to the drawing board and the same old graft[emoji22]

Have a guess!!..possibly something to do with this "Asked my customer to investigate, they are regularly asking but getting the classic “ we can get someone else if your not happy with rates “

You can’t always get what you want…fact of life!

From a band you might have heard of

"
You can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometimes, yeah
You might find you get what you need!

Rough with the smooth, swings and roundabouts
Keep an eye on the bigger picture.

To keep pence per mile and utilisation up I need to keep empty running low.
Hence accept my position in the pecking order.

That cut rate job was 21 miles from where I had tipped earnings of £198 @ £2.80 ppm.

I have asked nicely for increased rates over the years, but have lost a couple of nice jobs

Nice jobs or very profitable jobs ■■

Nice busmans holiday. Profitable but I felt a bit more was reasonable, considering driver shortage and run up to Christmas at the time

Obviously they didn’t agree [emoji22]

Hello gentlemen,
I’m new to the forum and I’m gathering the info to calculate all pros and cons to become an owner operator.
When it comes to rates I know that each one of you protects its own business and does not want to share its clients with anybody else. However, rather than sharing the client names I would like to talk about the rates in general…
Soo… Maritime offers £1.35 pm for its subcontractors but I know for fact that they get anything between £1.55-£2.10 pm. Amazon offers (international freight) £2.80 pm. I’m talking about rates in the Tilbury docks area.
What are the rates you come across around the country? Haulage exchange does anyone uses it? What are the rates on it and do you have to bid on them or is it given by the company that needs the haulage service?

HI. And as a newcomer to TNUK, Welcome.
A few questions so those with more knowledge than me can give you some answers:
How much and what experience of Hire and Reward Transport do you have?
How much business experience do you have?
Are you expecting to run just a unit or a trailer too?
Does the Amazon rate you`ve quoted apply to all miles or loaded only? Who pays ferries? Guaranteed work?

Since I haven’t got an O’Licence as yet I haven’t got any experience in Hire & Reward Transport as such.
When it comes to the business experience I’ve got just over 2 years as a HGV Ltd driver for various clients (this is where I managed to get the knowledge of the rates).
Amazon pays that per loaded OWN trailer and the ferry crossing is negotiable and paid extra by Amazon with the quote.
Bit easier in continental Europe when ferry isn’t required

and it will be unit and trailer and for added flexibility I’ll be hiring the trailers so I can do different types of work (curtainsiders, flatbeds, skeletons etc…)

As it is the first working day of the year I will make my annual post today I do read this site most days though

Its your business you put your rates up if the business is not producing a profit .

It is not a business if the company is being dictated by the supplier what to charge .That is verging on employment or worse still the new word called Gig economy !
If your not careful some clown will devise an Uber truck app and the controllers would have a field day watching everybody fight over chicken seed .

Looks like they already have.
