Folding crane

I know it’s your truck Dan, but when I worked for Grahams ( eons ago ) , I was always told NEVER go over the cab !

I have a FASSI 660 HIAB that is set up for going over the cab…without it we couldn’t do many jobs on the tight sites. The modern HIABS have sensors that detect movement and will shut the crane down. The only way to tip a modern lorry loader is by either the ground giving way or you have cheated the sensor!

Piece of silver paper over the sensor , Oreo I’ve heard .

Used to do it but it just isnt worth it these days. If the job cant be done with the HIAB then the job gets stopped and a bigger/better crane is brought in.

One good piece of advice is to unfold the crane from the mast side so that it does not open out above your head. They have a habit of collecting water which will give the unwary an impromptu shower    And like most things the best way to remember is to forget it once.

Don’t be tempted to fold it completely up from the mast side, even though they usually have a marker on the slew ring to point to the stow position there can often be hoses and pipes etc that could damaged if it is slightly out of alignment. I always walk round and finish off so I can see it down safely.

Too right the Hmf holds water and the extra long extensions stick out the wrong end if not in correctly which means they end up below chassis level as in stuffed in to the hyd tank
