Buses, coaches, & lorries

A couple of photos of a Bedford Duple operated by Yarranton Bros from Eardiston nr Tenbury wells in Worcs
The pic at the side of the road was taken somewhere in France en route to The Costa Brava
The other pic was taken on a camp site which was located just outside San Antoni de Calonge ,south of Palamos on the Costa Brava.
It was mid Summer 1960 and 206 AUY had carried a youth club camping trip from Birmingham, and back without faltering.
I believe Yarranton Bros are still operating from their rural HQ and garage, and where until a few years ago operating the school buses
used by two of my grand kids.

It looks that most British coaches and buses of the '50s, '60s and '70s were built using a body made by various coachbuilders on standard chassis. Did big manufacturers as Leyland or AEC provide standard bodies? In France, Berliet, Saviem and Chausson fitted their own bodywork as standard offers, and coachbuilders were sollicitated whem more comfort was needed.

Leyland at one time produced its own bodies for some double and single deck chassis, and for some coaches, but the majority were supplied as chassis only. Crossley also offered complete vehicles as well as chassis-only deals. AEC had a “captive” bodybuilder, Park Rpyal, but also supplied many of its chassis to outside companies. Bristol was a similar setup, using Eastern Coach Works (ECW) almost exclusively whilst both were under Tilling Group control. Midland Red built many of their own BMMO buses and coaches to their own designs. Seddon used its own subsidiary Pennine Coachworks to complete the Seddon-Pennine range. There were probably others.

Sorry Oily -
Apart from the Pre-production prototypes and (I think), a couple of the production prototypes, all the Mk 1 Leyland Nationals and the later Mk 2 versions (those shown in your post) were built at Workington. Some for Australia were produced, and sent in kit-form for assembly in Australia. There were a few others which received non-standard bodywork but were still a Workington product.

Thanks! Here’s what Wikipedia says about it:

AEC under its Assocoiated Commercial Vehicles banner also owned Roe. It would seem that the well known RT body was in fact very similar to a Roe design. For those up for it the history of Charles H Roe Coachworks make interesting readin with it mnay changes of ownership. The company in effect surviving as Optare today.

This blue coach brought about 40 elderly Spanish people to a nearby hotel in Mojacar,
and was parked here for several days. I heard that the Spanish Government offers all
Old Age Pensioners a subsidised short holiday break each year, whether this is true,
I do not know. If it is…I am on my way back there.

King Long coaches, very stylish, but were they any good?
This one was operated by Globe Coaches of Barnsley, but not for long, and is currently on SORN with the DVLA.

King Long offer a range of motorcoaches and buses on the British public passenger road vehicle market.and have been doing so since 2005-2006.

The original British dealer of King Long earned a poor reputation in customer relations, late deliveries, etc. And so a new dealership was established
in 2015 in Birmingham,King Long UK Europe Ltd.

I think most if not all of the above Globe - Tate King Long motorcoaches have now been sold on to other motorcoach operators

NOTE: Globe and Tate were connected, but Tate went out of business in 2016,but Globe - Rosa Motorcoaches ,Redbrook Business Park,Wilthorpe
Road,Barnsley is still in business  Globe had a depot on Wakefield Road,Barnsley on the lefthand - Wakefield-bound - side a bit lower down
and not far from what used to be the Paul Sykes Organisation, lorry, bus and motorcoach dealer premises, which is now the depot of Stagecoach -
Yorkshire Traction.

Yorkshire Traction Garages And Headquarters,Upper Sheffield Road,Barnsley.

What a surreal shock I had on the sunny Sunday night of 5th August,2018 when enroute to Sheffield I passed the site of what used to be the headquarters and garages of the Yorkshire Traction Company, the famous motorcoach and bus operator, now part of the Stagecoach Group.
This site is now a housing estate! :exclamation: :open_mouth: :unamused: I already knew about this years since, and had seen some photographs of this housing
estate. BUT,it was still a weird and surreal shock seeing ordinary houses - and not motorcoaches, buses and garages - in the flesh-metal-bricks :frowning:
on this sacred (to motor vehicle enthusiasts! :exclamation:  ) site! :exclamation:

The Yorkshire Traction garages were a welcome landmark for travellers coming in and out of Barnsley for decades! :exclamation: And when I mean decades,
I mean decades! :exclamation:  Yorkshire Traction used the above site from 1902 to Wednesday,22nd October,2008 ! :exclamation: All of Yorkshire Traction’s
motorcoaches and buses were then transferred to the Wakefield Road depot.

It now currently coming to the Tenth Anniversary of the unfortunate closure of the Yorkshire Traction Garages - Headquarters,Upper Sheffield Road,
Barnsley,on Monday,22nd October,2018… :frowning:

The above typical garage scene is charismatic, fascinating, exciting and is infinitely more interesting than an housing estate!! :exclamation: :exclamation:

So in 1955 this Leyland Tiger PS1 was rebuilt and converted in to a double decker omnibus, its chassis was renumbered,it was re-registered,
it was re-bodied of course and also given a new fleet number

The above photograph is of the front cover of the book,Glory Days:Yorkshire Traction,Bob Telfer,Ian Allan,2008.The superb Roger Holmes
front cover photograph of the above Leyland Tiger has archetype all over it: it is of a archetypal Yorkshire Traction bus of the kind that were
in service during the 1940s,1950s,1960s and early 1970s ;the Leyland Tiger PS1 is a classic and archetypal Leyland ; this Leyland also has the
archetypal and charismatic Leyland look

This Scania N113 bus has been seen earlier on page 4, It is now about 20 years old,
and still in service as a spare vehicle, and used as an extra on busy Market Days.
It is part of the fleet of Autocares Rodrigues of Los Gollardos, Almeria, Spain.

bctso.f.jpgFasinating stuff all this PSV info.
A touch disappointing not to see any Birmingham City Transport ,ie,pre WMPTE era pics or memories.
A one time the Birmingham City Fleet was the largest municipal undertaking in the world and second to none in regard to its maintainance regime.
OK, i am a tad biased as i spent my first 12 working years as a mechanic at BCTs Selly Oak Depot.
The photo was not taken by me but by Cyril Cooper, also a mechanic at Selly Oak.
It shows one of BCTs all Crossley double deckers with some heavy remidial work taking place on the Crossley engine, not Crossleys best point
The Crossley bodywork however was excellent and looking back i think these exposed radiator Crossleys where one of the best looking PSVs on the road.
The date is unknown but likely to be in the first half of the 60s.
