I know a fair few of the Foden models n have driven a few of them, but still see pics of models n haven’t a clue of their number. Does anybody have a definitive list with pics? Tried the net but seems to know less than me!!

The most definitive record of Foden chassis and cab types for the purposes of recognition and identification, that I know of, is in Wobbe Reitsma’s book called Foden Special Vehicles (Old Pond). The subject is covered over dozens of well-researched pages towards the back. Robert

Could be an S70 depending on wether it was a plastic cab as the identical S60 had one made of steel and it was difficult to tell them apart. The half cab was a S50, we had a fleet of them. I passed my test in a Foden with the S24 type tilt cab but it also had the removeable front grille so that was possibly a different model again? We had a couple of S36’s and a handful of S39’s, later some of the S50’s were fitted with the S40 Motor Panels full cab when the original half cabs disintegrated through rot and accident damage! One of the half cab tankers lost its cab roof, we welded it back on but didn’t get it quite square and the left hand cab window no longer fitted so we rigged a polythene sheet up for the driver, he complained but then he shouldn’t have knocked the roof off in the first place!

Me too Coomsey , it fitted round you when you got in , everything in easy reach the only drawback was the upward vision from the side windows if you were on the tall side . It rally looked the part , Dave

Certain other Fodens for the British market also had non-standard cabs.
Durimin Redhill,FE and FG models for Portland Blue Circle Cement.
Many export Fodens had locally produced and styled cabs.
Delta Cab,for the Australian market. UNQUOTE.

Don’t mix up the Foden Sabrina with the ERF SF Sabrina There was-is no relation!

TOTALLY SEPERATE FODEN CAB DESIGINATIONS AND TOTALLY SEPERATE FODEN MOTOR VEHICLE CHASSIS-MODEL DESIGNATIONS.

Another thing is that numbers such as S20,S21,S24,S39,S40,S80,et al are designations for Foden cabs ONLY:There was a separate designation system for Foden motor vehicle models - for example,a Foden 8E6/24 two stroke could have either have an S21 Spaceship cab or an S24 Sabrina cab.
So,with a very few exceptions,if any, just going by what cab a Foden is fitted with does NOT indicate what model it is!

And when you add in all the rigid and articulated haulage models,engine options,lightweights,medium weights,heavy weights,changes of model designations,changes of model designation systems,special vehicles such as dumptrucks,crane carriers,heavy haulage ballast diesel road locomotives,military vehicles,etc,you have got to be on your marks! because it can be quite complicated!

Foden Special Vehicles,Wobbe Reitsma,Roundoak - Nynehead,2012 and the newly published Foden Export Vehicles,Wobbe Reitsma,Old Pond,2017,
although there are a number of mistakes and omissions in both books,they are the best books on their subject at present.

And just before I correct at least one photograph in this thread,not even some owners and drivers knew-know the correct model designations of their Foden lorries,motorcoaches,buses,heavy haulage ballast diesel road locomotives,whatever!

3rd Photograph:The two Cliffe -operated Foden tipper R8 lorries are T models with S24 cabs.

4th Photograph:The M.Orpwood - operated Foden tipper R8 lorry is another T model with an S24 cab,not an S36 cab

7th Photograph:The red & blue Foden with a silver-coloured tipper body is probably a Foden S60 DAXB8/38,S60-Cabbed,6x2-4-Twin Steer
38-Ton GTW Tipper-Bodied Articulated Lorry. It has an S60 cab,but I say it’s ‘probably’ a DAXB8/38 model because it’s probably powered by
a Gardner 8LXB 240-250 Straight Eight Diesel Engine

8th Photograph:The Amey Roadstone S50 half-cab Foden R8 tipper lorry is a Foden S50 8XB6/30ET,Tipper-Bodied 8x4 Lorry,EUL 888J.

NEW COMPUTER BASED DESIGNATION SYSTEM INTRODUCED IN August 1973.
If you think that the above model designations are complicated,just get a load of this from August 1973 onwards example ! :

Foden S83 48K030R2208,S83-Cabbed,Rolls-Royce Eagle MkIII 220 Diesel-Engined,Dropside-Bodied,16-Ton,Rigid 8x4 Freight Lorry.This is
a Foden military vehicle model,but the civilian version was very similar and had the same or similar model designation!
The K in the desigination was a unique British Army-Ministry Of Defence code letter which stood for General Freight Carrier.

Thankfully the computer -generated designations were simplified for general use,so for example the designation for the above
model in civilian model is RR220/32, and has an S83 cab.

So…Foden model designations,cabs,models,etc are an absolute minefield! You have got to be on your marks!

I’ve spent 30-odd - years on and off researching Foden models and their designations,and certain Foden books,especially the Foden Special
Vehicles book,confirmed my researches…and I am still researching and learning.The Foden Special Vehicles book is a landmark,a oasis
and was it was a great EUREKA ! moment when it was published!

If I have time I will explain in some length Foden motor vehicle model designations in a later post

on the Paul Gee thread,but after reading VALKYRIE’s extensive post about them that wont be happening !
