Pilkington Glass St. Helens, AEC Regal Mk.III coach chassis for low height bodywork. When I was riding in
Holden’s lorries as a kid in the 1950s Pilkington’s Regals were a virtually guaranteed sight on Liverpool Docks. The drivers
and mates had uniforms like those of bus drivers, with peaked caps. I think that Pilkington’s had five Regals over the years,
9.6 litre engines with 5-speed constant mesh gearboxes.

Hello Gingerfold  Yes,many companies had motorcoach and bus chassis adapted for their own specialist uses and had purpose-built bodywork
(or whatever) fitted to these chassis.

I’ve carefully researched these AEC Regal MkIII Motorcoach-Based Pilkington Glass Transporters and have come up with the
following information:-

1.AEC Regal MkIII 9621A068 /Woodward,Formby, Glass Transporter,ADJ 601,January 1949.Pilkington Brothers,St.Helens.

2.AEC Regal MkIII 9621A953 /Woodward,Formby, Glass Transporter,ADJ 926,September 1949.Pilkington Brothers,St.Helens

3.AEC Regal MkIII 9621A954 /Woodward,Formby, Glass Transporter,ADJ 927,September 1949.Pilkington Brothers,St.Helens

4.AEC Regal MkIII 9621A955 /Woodward,Formby, Glass Transporter,ADJ 928,September 1949.Pilkington Brothers,St.Helens

5.AEC Regal MkIII 9621A956 /Woodward,Formby, Glass Transporter,ADJ 929,September 1949.Pilkington Brothers,St.Helens

6.AEC Regal MkIII 9621A1063 /Woodward,Formby, Glass Transporter,ADJ 930,November 1949.Pilkington Brothers,St.Helens

7.AEC Regal MkIII 9621A1064 /Woodward,Formby, Glass Transporter,ADJ 931,December 1949.Pilkington Brothers,St.Helens

So according to the information that is available to researchers so far,Pilkington Glass operated seven -7- of these AEC
Regal MkIII 9621A Motorcoach Chassis Based Glass Transporter Lorries.

The bodywork was built by Woodwards Of Formby - H.Woodward & Son,Formby,Lancashire, who were commercial vehicle body builders
and dealers in Atkinson Diesel Vehicles! :exclamation:  ,QV the advertisement below:-

The 9621A model-chassis designation informs us that this model of AEC Regal MkIII is powered by an AEC A208 or A218 9.6 Litre
Diesel Engine, driving through an AEC D124 4-Speed Sliding Mesh Crash Gearbox. The numbers after the model-chassis designation is the actual
chassis number.

Just to show you what an AEC Regal MkIII motorcoach looks like in dedicated form, and how beautiful and very handsome they
were, are and always will be  ,here are two photographs - FOV & FNV - of the following AEC Regal MkIII motorcoach, one of the later 30ft
long examples and one of the last AEC Regal MkIII motorcoaches to be built - but actually the chassis of this particular
motorcoach,NXL 847,could have been built in 1949,QV below.

I do wish that I had a photograph,or copy,of a magnificent AEC Regal Motorcoach advertisement of 1937,which consists of a memorable
photograph and the following wonderful and true words:-

QUOTE The AEC Triangle On The Radiator Of A Motorcoach Means Smooth Luxurious Travel.

AEC Builders of London’s Buses,Trolleybuses and Motorcoaches.

AEC,Southall,Middlesex,England. UNQUOTE.

The advertisement’s black & white photograph shows a circa 1930-1935 AEC Regal Half Cab Full Canopy Touring
Motorcoach, complete with rear roof-mounted luggage rack and dark livery, travelling up a fairly steep and narrow cliff-side
main road.A large road sign with a white background and black capital letters proclaims:BANK IT. Which means give way to
motor vehicles ascending this road.
This AEC Regal motorcoach could have been operated by the famous Devon General motorcoach and bus operating company.

The above AEC Regal Motorcoach advertisement is the very stuff of romance! :exclamation:

Petrol-Engined Heavy Lorries,Motorcoaches,Buses,etc.

Before the diesel-oil engine, and during the years it established itself in road transport vehicles, heavy lorries were either steam or petrol-engined,
buses and motorcoaches were petrol-engined - and in some cases petrol-electric - and in the earliest days of mechanical omnibuses some were steam powered.
During the 1930s and beyond many petrol-engined lorries, motorcoaches, buses and even certain steam road vehicles were re-engined with diesel-oil
engines. The magnificent petrol-engined AEC Mammoth Major Six MkII,DLM 480,new to Express Dairy in 1936,QV photograph below, is a rare
survivor of a petrol-engined heavy lorry of the 1930s :-
