Fox Bros of Blackburn shut down haulage operations in 1980s ( they were friut & veg merchants too) and carried on with commercial vehicle sale. Now JDS Trucks, Blackburn depot

Wardells stopped transport, I think, but had large storage depots at Stretton Airfield, storing for Lever Brothers, amongst others

Priestner’s of Moore - I think they just wrapped up.

Does anyone remember Aber Carriers of Welshpool Powys with the red units my father-in-law used to work for them many moons ago before they ceased trading

yes - used to backload them from Lever Brothers at Port Sunlight when I worked for Bowker. I think that the traffic chap was called Mike. They used to do 2 or 3 a day for us. Would it have been about 1985 that they finished?

Does anyone remember Santa fe express from cheltenham dont know what come of them but i think the owners of atchkinson topeca had something to do with santa fe, they were a wellturned out fleet scania 111 141 and mercs

Yes, the founder of Santa Fé took its name from the US railroad Atchison Topeka & Santa Fé and then sold the company. Later when he decided he wanted another company he used the other half of the orginal. Must have been a railway fan :open_mouth: .

Salut, David.

Hmm, Ellerpack was, or became, Allinson’s Rotherham depot

I think that Cambro sold out to one of the civil engineering companies (their splendid Atkinson Venturer 6x4 tractor has survived into preservation, though not in their colours)

What about some of the big one’s -
Swift - the red livery with the black outline of a bird - they used to be everywhere, I believe they are now Salvensen.
Brain Haulage
Draper Transport - used to see at least one of them every time went out.
ACL (Aston Clinton) - believe they are part of Norbert now.
Shows how fragile trucking is.

Were they originally from Skegness, or is that a different Swift’s?

Salut, David.

Swift - Used to deal with a depot in Northampton (they had the New Holland contract before Transmec) - they also had a depot in Kent. They must have had depots elsewhere.
They were everywhere.
Draper Transport - The owner of it would have made a good stand in for Captain Birdseye (I used to know his son and daughter they lived in a huge house in Hadleigh. Essex overlooking the Thames Estuary).

Yep - Swift sold out to Christian Salvesen
Draper to TDG (Draper’s in Purfleet, you mean?)
Brain went down
ACL went to Norman Deathstrangler

Salut, David.

yes, they were in Skegness. I think that Northampton became their head office (New Duston, I think) although I do recall subbing work to the Skegness office in the early 1980s

Thought so, I seem to remember them running D cabbed Fords.

Salut, David.
