Hope I have spelled that right. Can anyone remember when these mirrors became all the rage for artics? And at about the same time Bostrum seats? We seemed to be fitting them all the time at Richard Reads.ERF,had a wooden seat platform so we had to become carpenters
Hi LL I think IIRC they were Zanetti mirrors with twin lenses. I had a pair on an old ex Richard Read Seddon ( KDG 947E , John Norman had 946E) I entered it in Richardâs big auction in 1974 Where it was purchased by Gammonds of Hereford , sometime between delivering the vehicle to Longhope and the day of the sale , the âZanettiâ Mirrors had mysteriously disappeared - so , yes they were very popular and fortunately it didnât affect the price it sold for on the day !
were they these sort ?
Thatâs them!
i presume there like hens teeth now then - you dont see many restoâs - if any with em fitted , come to that - the winguards , are they also hard to find ?
HiyaâŚwhat were the ones on this old girl called then. Was it Winguard or something like that Cheers Bubbs,
Hi Bubbs, I am getting confused now ( Senior moments!) on reflection - no pun intended - the ones on that Krupp cabbed machine look more like the ones I had on the Seddon ,maybe there were two types of Zanetti? Best regards hope all is well with you !
Werenât these these were the ânormalâ stock winguards

I had them on an AEC MK5 as well Boris plus the Zanetti mirrors. I even had Zanetti mirrors on an AEC MK3 as well, very up to date.
They were very poular back in the 70âs. I heard that they were outlawed by Vosa and that if you presented a truck for plating with them fitted then it would not be tested, donât know if this is just an urban myth or not, but they certainly disappeared from use very quickly. I thought that they were great. i even had a pair of small ones fitted to a VW Devon Caravanette I had at the time (wish Iâd never sold it, but thatâs another story)
Hi All
The Zennati mirrors were very popular in the early 70âs especially on Training school vehicles. When set up right they gave an excellent allround view to the rear and down the sides of the vehicle.
They werenât cheap but IIRC you could send damaged ones back to the suppliers and get an exchange one back and only be charged for the damaged part, usually the glass.
I never found out why they went out of favour, the training vehicles I worked with had them fitted and they went through their MoTâs with them on.
Cheers Bassman
We only had one driver who was obsessed with having Zenetti mirrors on both his Mastiff and then the Atky which he fitted at his own expense He didnât have them on the third new motor he got,an ERF âAâ Series as by this time the manufactures were fitting much better, larger mirrors to the motors.Iâm not just sure what he did with them as I canât recall seeing them fitted to his VW Beetle
Cheers Bewick.

HiyaâŚlorries wouldânt MOT with them fitted. at one firm i worked at used to change them for test and change them back after test.
that would be mid 70s. that was about the time the the VOLVO super truck apeared with(wait for it ) heated mirrors, that was the end for the zenati i think. the heated ones was so much better as you all know.
John
Hi Folks,
We put them on the A series better than the flat yankie type.
Never put them on the B series they were convex,i think they
were outlawed mid seventies because the main glass was not
a certain size.
A few pictures,
Cheers Malc.

Cheers Bewick.
Dennis, that has to be one of the best pics ever presented on this or any other thread on TNUK, that Atki takes me back to 1972 when I was king of the road (IMO)
. Regards Kev.
Ps we had those mirrors on all the 1418âs at Waughs, they were a great asset although we had a window in the back of the cab they did help in a tight spot.

Thanks for the kind coment âkevâ and without blowing my own trumpet it is,quite innocently,a class Atky shot but it is also coupled to an immaculately sheeted and roped load of paper, the whole shot is from a previous era that is long gone and fast been forgotten about eh! Cheers Dennis.
I agree with Kev Dennis that is a real classic photo of a classis wagon, & Of course a classic haulage mans fleet, One of the best Ive seen, Regards Larry.
