… Anybody had anxious moments on this?..
A52 going up Froghall towards Ashbourne with a twin splitter ,a steep up hill where high 3rd to high 1st changes are needed have to be the worst moments with this excellent gearbox .

Same- with an Iveco and an auto box @ just under 44t Only used the road to avoid A50 closure a few weeks ago, apologies to any cars behind as it crawled up at an asthmatic snails pace
Coming down a hill near Bentham in Yorkshire in the snow fully loaded, rental trailer and I’m thinking the brakes had been wound back a bit to save wear, everytime I touched the brakes it’d start to jack-knife, same if I tried to use the gears or the exhaust brake obviously…
Went to the Lakes last year and decided to try out Wrynose and Hardknotts Pass in the car what an experience that was Our lass was ■■■■■■■■ herself
I loved it, the car could only get up some of the climbs in 1st Gear (Focus 1.4 Zetec) I’d recommend anyone going to the lakes to have a drive over them both. Stunning scenery.
Coming down from the A52 at Caldon Low into Oakamoor with a laden Foden eight legger, had to put the thing into the bankside to stop it! Found out that the brakes hadn’t been adjusted for three months and two had gone over the cam so were useless anyway. Living in Matlock there used to be many close shaves with drivers from the flat country (Lincolnshire and the Fens) getting out of control on Lime Tree Hill (Chesterfield Road) and there have been a few runaways over the years.
Like others Froghall challenged me when I was towing an eightlegger back to the quarry with a blown engine (Gardner! ) and had to ■■■■■■ change down the box rapidly, I only had about ten tons on but was just waiting for a propshaft to snap which was a regular Foden occourence at one time. I always took it steady down there loaded but several times I had laden trucks passing me to get a run at the bank up to Kingsley. We resurfaced it once with HRA and I had that sharp bend at the top, after I tipped into the paver I had trouble getting away empty because the wheels were spinning on the tack coat!
Pete.
Porlock Hill , now that`s a good one

maybe its me but that wagon looks as if its run off road coming uphill, no damage on the right, its prob just me
I wouldn’t of though he be going up hill really ,as he’d would struggle to get round the chevron signs .
The A9 heading towards Perth from Stirling there is a hill climb that is a toughie with a full load. It climbs steeply for about 2 miles. I was taking a fully loaded container to Aberdeen once and was going down the gears like they were going out of fashion. Missed one and almost ground to a halt! Was in 2nd low (manual GB on 2003 Scania) for about a miles climb of 10mph!
If I remember right a mobility scooter passed me!
Chugging up Windy Hill fully loaded in a DAF CF with the reduced power flashing up on the dash thinking I am gonna get pinged up the ■■■ by a flyer

That’s just a slope lol .
Looks like he was coming downhill and didn’t make the corner , brake fade perhaps ? I’m sure there are some run off sandtrap things on the hill .
You may like to read the thread called ‘Really Nasty Hills’ on the old-timers’ forum. Here’s the link: Robert
About 7 years ago, halfway up the side of mountain on the A470 between Welshpool and Dolgellau, loaded car transporter lorry and drag.
Snowing like buggery and settling quickly, losing grip fast, tried diff lock but all that did was slew the prime mover sideways with both drive wheels locked, so no choice but to just let it spin one wheel which did dig down and find some purchase, so i’m going up this long long hill at about 1mph with one wheel spinning merrily, took me about 20 minutes to get to the top, overtaken by a car, car coming down the hill braked for it, skidded and the two connected, car coming down hill stopped, car that overtook me and hit him buggered off, i didn’t get the number and daren’t stop anyway or i’d never have got going again.
The diff and transmission never did feel quite the same afterwards, must have boiled the oil but never failed.
Most frightening episode was some 30 odd years ago, i’m in empty artic tipper early early hours of the morning heading out towards Caxton Gibbet (real A45 between St Neots and Cambridge long before current A14 was dualled and misnumbered), going along quite nicely at a steady 60.
About half a mile from Gibbet i can see lights, indicators hazards all sorts…it was at that point everything went light, yep all of a sudden that wet road has frozen solid, one sheet of black ice, i’m still doing 60.
Nerve wracking slithering buttock clenching minute went by to knock the speed off, no load sensors on those trailers, full brakes regardless of load instant lock up on a dry road let alone a sheet of ice.
Just managed to dump the speed in time and slithered past half a dozen lorries strewn in various positions in the ditch sideways up each others arse etc, the lads couldn’t stand up it was that slippy.
That was a lesson never forgot.

I could barely get my old Mini up there, last time I found myself in that neck of the woods…
1:4 slope at it’s steepest bits.
Then there’s the Pickering-Thirsk road which also has a 1:4 (25%) slope, and you see those 4x4s who ignore the “no caravan” signs come a cropper when they find out the hard way that it’s not just Artics that can be jackknifed.
