Then there’s the Pickering-Thirsk road which also has a 1:4 (25%) slope, and you see those 4x4s who ignore the “no caravan” signs come a cropper when they find out the hard way that it’s not just Artics that can be jackknifed.

Was going up there once in a Scania R480 drawbar, bottled out of using the opticruise and had it in manual. Was going OK albeit slowly when the artic fridge in front must have gone for a gear change and missed it, next thing his whole load of bagged meat in IBC type bins came out the back door, all over the road. Bet he wished that he’d used restraining bars. Stuck there until they cleared the road, then faced with doing a hill start on the 1 in 4 bit grossing 44 tonnes. OK it worked, but I wouldn’t want to do it too often.
done the thisk/pickering road in a car, now that was fun.
Birdlip, first week out in ERF with non-synchro eaton twin splitter, box full of neutrals half way up. Had to stop and start from scratch.
Had to reverse up this drive a few 2 years back.
Boss wouldn’t believe how bad I said it was so took a few pics for him
Maybe not ultra steep but icy. With a corner. Was great fun In an auto boxed daf
Anything with a slight incline was a challenge when I used to drive a Renault G290 with a full load.
Then there was coming out of Par Harbour in Cornwall Driving Renault Premium with a full load of China Clay, dragging it up from St Blazey using all 385 of those snarling horses, until you reach the top when you had to take to proper local roads as you weren’t allowed to go down the hill into Lostwithiel. Low gear and foot firmly planted on the engine brake, which didn’t seem to do more than make an encouraging noise.
I do routes with bigger climbs and descents these days, but I have loads more power, less weight and far better service and auxiliary brake systems to cope with it.

That looks like real challenge, and I bet you had to make sure your load was well secure. Did you show you boss the picture at that angle as well.
Highway 1 across the rockies or Donners Pass both in the winter a pain in the ■■■.

Porlock Hill , now that`s a good one
Nothing good about Porlock the UK’s steepest A road, went up it on a motorbike years ago first and last time.
The A515 into Ashbourne on market day in a 8 wheel Foden was a brown trouser day more so as exactly the same truck carrying the same load had gone through a dry stone wall on the same road that very day.
Porlock gets the vote from me have a look on google street view.
A9 @ Berriedale.
Tight uphill bend. Must take all road.
Like a lottery as you can’t see oncoming vehicles!
DAF 510 44t 1st high all way up!
Ps. The one at the top of screenshot!

When you go down it loaded 7 times a day you get used to it, however when snow is on the ground it can get ‘interesting’ to say the least!
Pete.
A53 out of Leek towards Buxton, with over 12t left on the back end of a tip tank, had to stop near the top and select crawler.
2 of the roads I came across lately. Taking ballast weight up to wind farms. Up to about 105 ton. No chance of missing a gear though. Just pick one at the bottom and stick with it
Several years ago I delivered to Arlington Court National trust in Nth Devon driving a rigid 18 tonner. It was starting to blizzard very heavily when I arrived and on the way out the snow had really come down. I was about a mile out of the drop on the very steep and twisty A39 heading towards Barnstaple when I lost traction on a bend with a very steep incline and my back end slewed towards the big drop into sod all on the nearside. I gingerly tried to get going again but the back end just slipped further towards drop. I was out of the cab in an instant but alas no mobile phone signal! I started to trudge up the hill to hopefully get a signal & ring for help and was so luck to meet a Land Rover coming down. I explained the situation, that the road was completely blocked and would be until I could summon help when the LR driver told me he was local and could help. he turned round and drove away, and 15 mins later a tractor with chains came down the hill. He pulled my arse end sideways away from the drop, then towed me the rest of the way up the hill until the road was driveable again.

I live just off this road and have been up/down Sutton Bank (the 1:4) many times. I had one wagon that would go up if it wasn’t wet. Trouble with Sutton Bank is that it can be dry at the bottom and snowing at the top lol. I’ve turned artics round on it twice!
Anyway we’ve got better than that round here, I give you the 1:3 Chimney Bank…

now that is a good one, only been up it in the pickup and that was enough

Went to the Lakes last year and decided to try out Wrynose and Hardknotts Pass in the car what an experience that wasOur lass was [zb] herself
I loved it, the car could only get up some of the climbs in 1st Gear (Focus 1.4 Zetec) I’d recommend anyone going to the lakes to have a drive over them both. Stunning scenery.
hardest drive sutton bank in a 340 erf 3 axle no midlift and a twin axle trailer at 38 ton
I once climbed the matterhorn, does that count?

A52 going up Froghall towards Ashbourne with a twin splitter ,a steep up hill where high 3rd to high 1st changes are needed have to be the worst moments with this excellent gearbox .
a couple of years ago i had a spell on a 7 1/2 tonner and used to stop at Froghall Wharf for my break.in the space of a few months, half a dozen artics failed to get up that hill, and had to reverse back down, sometimes with police assistance, turn into the road at the bottom, and head back towards Cellarhead.

I did it with a twin split and two injectors knackered and grossing sixty ton.
