Give way to cyclists when turning, says British Cycling - BBC News
Not a problem, the chap with the red flag walking in front can advise you when it is safe to turn.
what a daft idea how about the lycra gang pay to ise the roads then they can moan about something .
Cyclists want primary, ie the right to cycle in the middle of the road and they want only to be overtaken if there is 1.5 meters round them and now they want the right to squeeze up the inside of a vehicle …
I think in London especially we should take note of this and follow it. Could be sitting at a set of lights for, well, most of the rush hour.
I’m normally quite chilled about road users on other forms of transport. Riding your horse, trundling in a tractor, dithering cos you’re lost in your Micra, but it just seems that there is never any give with the cycle organisations, it’s all one way.
Off topic, for which I apologise, but cyclists are a real pain with horses as well
For some reason horses don’t hear them until they are very close. I have ‘suggested’ to them that they speak before they come up behind a thoroughbred or any less spooky kind of horse but normally got a fairly rude answer.
I did tell one that I thought having a hoof print in the middle of his forehead would make it very difficult for the guy laying him out to make him look pretty for his relatives to see…
I can’t help but think that if there were the same quantity of horses holding up the cyclists as leisure cyclists do roadusers, then all the arguments cyclists use and which could be applied equally to horses, would be out of the window.
I used to walk my dogs round the village of Aston not far from me on a Sunday morning. There’s a short section of around a 100 yards where the pavement narrows to barely a foot wide. Walking with two dogs on the inside and me on the pavement and one dog on the outside on the road is not usually a problem. Never had an issue with cars or motorbikes, or horses for that matter, giving us a bit of space. Pack of cyclists come down the road hell bent on that yellow jersey and one of them whacks the outside dog as he passes. Must have felt it but did he stop, no, not a chance.
Could we not crush all the bikes and use them to boost the steel industry?
If these loonies want more rules them maybe they should be shouting for testing and lighting to apply to ALL road users. Bring back the dynamo to power their indicators so we have a chance to see where want to go.
I think the lycra clad road warrior is down the outside of a queue of traffic and through the lights before you’ve released the handbrake.
It’s the “normal” less experienced riders who are encouraged to go down the nearside of traffic by cycle lane markings. Surely its these very markings that are putting less wary cyclists in danger. We need to catch up with the rest of Europe and move cycle traffic away from motorised traffic as much as possible, this might encourage more cycling it would encourage me to cycle into the local town if I could use the type of cycle ways I’ve seen in Germany.
In some places the effort a local council makes is a token gesture to say they have done something. An example was where I lived in Norfolk, they widened the footway by a couple of feet, finished it 200 yards from the entrance to a 110 house estate at one end and the other end finished half a mile short of the town centre.
The have since built another 700 houses beside it and it is totally inadequate, cyclists therefore use the main carriageway.
I see that self opinionated Boardman is shouting again, it won’t be long before we see the other professional minority group agitators like Tatchel and Gray-Thompson jumping on the bandwaggon. I think we can safely say that TfL will announce a ‘consultation’ on the idea meanwhile issuing whatever contracts are needed to procure signage and lane markings.
The answer is clearly to ban all forms of motorised transport from London and let the cyclists get on with it. Perhaps we could allow horse-drawn trams because then we could all have a good laugh when lycra lout gets his wheel stuck in the gap betwen the cobbles and the rail and ends up flat on his face.
That would then be the horse’s fault of course.
Cycling safety indeed what about hi viz clothing and helmets or aren’t they responsible for that either
What a load of rubbish.
I am a sponsored rider for my local shop and compete at a high level (elite) and I ride too work. Cyclists first off should have no more rights then a car/lorry/whatever at a junction. Also idiot cyclists who run up the left hand side of trucks are just idiots, whenever I am behind a truck at traffic I sit there staring at his/hers mirrors until they notice me and I always stay in view of the mirrors.
Second riding without helmets is a big bone of contention in bike world, I along with my team mates want it to be made law. I think riding without is irresponsible and slower!
Now then passing distances. I am fine if a lorry or a car wants too pass me slowly but quite close I.e. Less then a metre, however if you pass me at 50+ yes I want a metre and a half because we get sucked into the vehicle…
Riding in the middle of the road is dumb unless there is a good reason like big pot holes etc, I want my space but I also don’t want to hinder anyone either. Some people get annoyed when two abreast, it is legal first off but it should only be done on quiet roads and let cars/trucks pass when needed. On larger roads single file 90% of the time unless it’s really quiet.
Also people who say things about tax and insurance. Road tax was abolished there is only VED (vehicle excersise duty) which is for emissions, so that’s a mute point. On insurance I am insured and I think some degree of insurance when riding on the road is acceptable
Long post but both sides can ultimately be arses and I often see stupid cyclists playing with fire and what really winds me up it’s always the drivers fault which it is not
So now the zb wits are not only saying that they won’t abide by rule 167 they also want immunity from it too so they can continue with their suicidal ideas of undertaking turning traffic through a junction. What could possibly go wrong.
Amazing isn’t it, an organisation that should be advocating responsible riding wants to encourage riders to ride up the inside of vehicles so they’ll be in a position where they have right of way
I realise that’s not exactly what they’re saying, but that is what would happen if this suggestion was introduced.

They want carte blanche to do exactly that.IE the right to undertake traffic through junctions on the basis of priority over turning traffic.IE total immunity from and reversal of rule 167 for cyclists.Bunch of nutters.
Thinking about it this guy must believe the sole reason for the accidents involving lorries is due to one thing:-
Driver seeing the cycle down the side and still riding over them regardless.
Because if he actually acknowledged blind spots exist then what he is advocating is cycles are allowed to pass down the blind spots, and through some magical “empathy for fellow man” the driver will Use second sight and therefore give way.
Applied logic to what he’s saying = 0
Accepting reports highlighting blind spots = 0
Fingers in ears = 10
Arrogance = 100
And Chris Bordman on BBC breakfast campaigning for this then shot himself in the foot by saying “of course it won’t work at all junctions because of traffic flow”

you would think that having them speak wouldnt matter to the horse, unless the horse cant hear them talking over the din from their oiled up manginas rubbing against their lycra clad thighs as they pedal…?
and if they want to crawl up your blindside and get flattened, then isnt that a win win situation for mankind in general?

Great post. Now if only the idiots on BOTH sides of the divide thought along your lines then we would all coexist much better.
Just a pity that mouth on a stick Roaduser doesn’t share your views.
I spend 5 or 6 months of the year in Spain where Spanish cyclists have as much power as God.They are supposed to respect the rules of the road, such as traffic lights, one way streets,under/overtaking ignoring vehicle indicators, etc but if a vehicle strikes one irrespective of circumstances the driver will face prosecution for not seeing them and giving way.
