Great idea for a thread by the way.
Hmm could have been around 1990, memory’s going along with the hair. Heres another. Merc SK 1626. I was about 22 here. And looking at it, I think its the BP at Alconbury as was.
Chris Webb, Wincantons at Maltby mid 1990s? I was in there once or twice with a Manton Scania 143, I did a bit of casual for them. You’ll have heard of Malton Bacon Factory I guess.
First real job, first real lorry to call MINE:)

Hullo Chris Webb,
I remember you very well, driving the Shunter at Wincantons’ Maltby depot. I remember you moaning at me a couple of times for parking in the wrong places ■■? But I also remember that you always could find me an empty trailer to go back with, I never waited very long, unlike some others had to. I was the old grey haired retired sod, driving a White F12 for Ward Bros, three loads a day to you from Malton Bacon Factory. This was in 2004. I am still an old grey haired retired sod, and I still do a bit for Ward Bros during the Summer when I am back in the Country . Good to see you are still around, all the best.
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Archie and Lonewolf. I remember Mantons, they did a lot of work for Wincanton when Unigate had the factory at Malton, including stock loads.Aylesford,Dartford,Harlow etc. They got closed down didn’t they,a pity if so,as they had a good fleet, all Scania IIRC.They had a self-employed driver working for them called Alan Scarborough,a real nice bloke and I often wonder what happened to him.
Now then Archie,I do remember you and I didn’t like to keep any of you hanging around except Harry who was always in a hurry.Dave, yourself and another whose name I can’t remember would get a trailer asap,we never had enough bloody trailers - although we would have if the warehouse tipped ‘em quicker
.Nice to know Wards are still going,do you know if Dennis’ and Featherstones are still going? Featherstones had a nice looking fleet, all secondhand I think.Wards had a young lass drive for them as well, come to think of it so did Mantons and she was a nice little bugger and didn’t give a toss about anybody, including the Manton gaffers.
Here’s a couple of photos to remind you of the yard at Maltby, take any trailer that’s empty There’s one at the end look.
If you go back to Wards give the lads my regards. The other one I remember was Nick and he could trap on a bit - one of the other shunters - JD - hated him for some reason, don’t know why.Do you remember JD?

I would be interested if Featherstones are still busy. I haven’t seen Malcolm for about 10 years, but there are some photos on here from when Mr Knapp drove for him It all ended in tears though!

Hullo again Chris,
Yes I shall certainly pass on your regards to Steve and Dave (Ward) and all the others that were on that job at the time ( except Harry eh?) Dave Marshall left and is now back to Farm work, Leo went to House of James in York, when Wards sold some of the business up, Bob is still going strong Nick is still going strong, the lad from London ( I forget his name) has long gone, the young lass that came from Mantons was Shelly, as you said a nice little bugger, I don’t remember where she went to, I’de forgotten about her, and as I mentioned I still do bits and pieces when I am at home.
Cheers, Archie.

Hi Archie.
Thanks for that mate.Shelley was the lass and you can pass on my regards to Harry,he was a moaning old bugger but ok otherwise.Shunters never moaned did they?
I forgot about Bob and Leo but I remember Dave saying he would go back farming which was his former job.The lad from London was a good lad and his name escapes me as well.I suppose Alex and Mucous are long gone from Malton now.I’m not sure who does the Malton work now.It went to Innovate at Manton Wood Worksop in 2005 but they went t*** up and maybe it’s Yearsleys or ESL now. There was a rumour from a mate of mine up at Sherburn that the contract was going back to Maltby/Wincanton but as far as I know that place is still empty. You didn’t say whether Dennis’ and Featherstones are still going, any idea? I still keep in touch with one or two ex Maltby,I live in the Isle of Man now, retired, feet up but still got diesel in me veins and wouldn’t turn a part-time job down if it suited me.
Cheers,Chris.
Wheel Nut:
Why does Chris Webb look younger on the Terberg than he does in the Marathon?
I’ve just spotted this
Must have been hydrocarbon fumes that made me look older or maybe the useless brakes on that Marathon Malc
Whatever it was, thanks for saying it but our lass says get off to Specsavers.
And I’ve just found these
Just to show how ambidextrous I was…
All geared up for shunting.1987
And holiday/sickness cover in t’office 1992. Phone was usually in the bin, hated the job but the money was good Whinging drivers put me off so I went back to being a whinging shunter
Hullo again Chris,
Do you know I had clean forgotten about Alec and Mucous Mike, I don’t know what on earth happened to Alec, maybe he’s still on there and I’ve missed him, but Mucous, you will never get rid of him, he married into the family, he’s still there. Cedric and Katie ?, Yes Dennis’ are still on the go, they have lots more vehicles than before, but of course do not work from the Bacon factory any more, that all changed when Innovate went in. Mind you they had all that good work out of Dovecoat Park. Max that owned the Bacon factory started up again somewhere over near Rotherham I believe, but could’nt give Wards any work because I believe Stobarts were offering to do the work for peanuts. and of course Wards are’nt monkeys and could’nt live on those wages. Wards would most certainly have got the work if it had been a more level playing field, as Leo was Max’s best friend anyway. Featherstones I know nothing about, I have seen their beautifully painted Wagons about but have never seen one actually stood still .
Cheers, Archie.
If you are talking about Mantons from Harrogate they are still going in a small way with about 4 wagons - closed the cold store at Flaxby but still have the processing plant just of the A59.
If the Featherstones you mean was the one with silver FH’s from Thirsk again he is still going in a small way after a run in with VOSA and slimming down
I’d forgotten Mucous was a relative of your’s Archie, well we’ve all got a cross to bear mate I wonder whereabouts Max Hilliard went to near Rotherham, and wasn’t Leo his “minder” when they went supping in Malton? Nice to know Dennis’ are still going,I’m trying to think of the nickname of one of their drivers who never washed his motor and the inside was a tip.He lived near Malton and had some restored tractors. He was very often on that Malton -Elmswell - Maltby - Malton job.Do you remember Alan, the other day shift shunter.I hear from him now and again,he’s up at Sherburn on the Wincanton/Sainsbury contract.

That sounds like them Biker, they used to be in a green livery with yellow signwriting. And that’s the Featherstone I mentioned,I wonder what they did wrong to get Vosa’s back up?

WoW !! Chris,
Bloody hell mate NO, Mucous Mike is certainly no relation of mine, perish the thought. No, he’s married into Stev’es Sister in law, so is Bob, but a different sister of course. That’s right Leo was Max’s minder on boozy do’s, but I think that was only so he could drive the Farrari home. Yes I remember Alan, I thought he was up at the Doncaster depot now, or so I heard.
Cheers, Archie.
this was my 1st truck pic takeing italian side of mt blanc then i went into a ford this is mine on the right
