Year of hope Jan 5 2005
By The Evening Chronicle
Freed North East lorry driver John Vasey is hoping for a fresh start in 2005.
The 43-year-old spent last Christmas in a French jail after his arrest on suspicion of drug smuggling.
He was eventually released in May after a campaign by his family and friends. During his 14-months in prison he lost his home, business and his marriage broke down.
On a website campaigning for justice for drivers, Mr Vasey, from Washington, said: “I have had a great time, eating and drinking too much and just relaxing with my wonderful friends and family who stood by me.”
