Myself and all my fellow drivers where I work keep daily/weekly hours records as does our employer.
We work as normal up to our 60hr limit but as our employer rigidly enforces the 48hr rt/wtd limit by week 15 we start getting days off at home on full pay.
My personal best is 8 days off in the last two weeks of the period…
Happy days we love it!

No jokeFrom what I can make out the driver must use recording equipment - the fact that it does not record break on driver 2 slot does not mean the driver can ignore it because if that was the case then what is the point of the driver 2 slot?
But it can record Break - Just not while the vehicle is in motion (on ours, Slot 2 defaults to Break as soon as the wheels stop turning). I have a feeling that this is because Break and Rest are shown using use the same mode, and you cannot be on Rest in a moving vehicle.
Unless you are changing seats several times a shift, it makes far more sense (to me) to leave your card out and make manual entries on inserting it into Slot 1 than to allow it to record the wrong activity and have to produce (and retain) a printout every time you change seats (which could be several times in any given day).

As I understand the rules, if you’re off work but getting paid for it you are required to book time for the WTD. i.e. 8 hours per day (and therefore not catching up on your “over-done” hours).

but if the driver is doing paperwork or giving directions an Incorrect record of work is recorded
As it would be if on break
Be interested to know what the authorities would say at a roadside stop if number 2 slot was not being used
According to my CPC last week both slots must be used when double-manning - in fact the co-driver can be picked up on the way by the driver but his card must be in slot 2 within 1 hour of the start of the driver’s shift.
Also DVSA have been told (supposedly) that they have to accept that the first 45 minutes of the co-driver’s “POA” time, as shown after swapping the card from slot 1 to slot 2 is break. Apparently it’s a good idea to leave it showing break for a minute or two before moving the vehicle. It keeps them happy
