Would you do it?

If your boss aksed you to take a newbie with you for 2 or 3 weeks tramping, Would you do it to show him the ropes?

2-3 weeks is a lot of time to learn the ropes. Your cab is your home and it must be weird sharing it with a stranger. Not sure I could live with another person 24/7 for that amount of time.

Simples ! NO

Yes. Only if the newbie had their own unit though.

I think it should be common practice.
We all had to learn.
I was lucky, I had family in the industry. I would often go with my brother on a trip to Spain, I didn’t have a HGV licence at the time, So i would drive the unit in the UK, We would pick up a trailer and he would take over. I wouldn’t drive in France though. Spain was another matter, He’d let me take over on the easy bits.
Getting my first class one job was easy, I passed my test on the monday, Then got in a lorry with my brother. Then i started work full time on the saturday. On the monday i was on abnormal load work.
Without being showed the ropes (ok, not legally), I wouldn’t have had the easy start into haulage that i did.
(We nearly battered each other a few times). That’s what happens when you work with family.

Those days are long gone. But showing the newbie the ropes and seeing what sort of person he is would be better than letting a lunatic out with your brand new unit and trailer.
In my Grandads day, Long before tachgraphs and driving licences, He would take on apprentices.

No, not tramping, shared a room with an overweight Driver once & he snored & ■■■■■■ all night long (I’m probably as bad !)

Would take 'em out on single shifts though.

Would have to have a look at him in the yard. If he looks like a filthy pig then no

Max of a week and I would. Any more than that and one of us wouldn’t be coming back

Not tramping i wouldn’t but did spend a 6 days with a newbie back last year as he hadn’t much class 1 experience so i sat in the passenger seat guiding him along in all aspects of our job.

I was asked to take a driver on a weeks training, daily runs though…
He was an alright guy for the first morning, then the afternoon approached…he began telling me how to drive, load, offload ect, hence the reason he was stood in an empty transport waiting room the second day!
So I guess, I’d have to be introduced to the new driver first.

Depends, my son is thinking of doing his HGVs and so I suppose I could put up with him for a couple of weeks not sure if he could put up with me though  . Other than that I wouldn’t have a problem mentoring a newbie on single shifts as I think its stupid that it isn’t more commonplace.

Every firm is different in what it moves and how it goes about thing, also the culture can range from ‘no worries’ to OCD and though you learn to adapt very quickly as an agency driver, it must be pretty daunting as a newbie to the job.

Having said that I’m not sure about tramping for more than a week

Absolutely not… the cab is too small as it is :unamused:

If it meant sharing a cab, no I wouldn’t.

Doing it with family is different to doing it with a stranger, what if you got stuck for two or three weeks with someone who’s company you couldn’t stand :frowning:

Simply NO learn the “ropes” on locals, then on his /her own.

No, because to cramped.
A couple of days max

I never did double manning. The thought of sharing that little tin box with some stranger for a whole week away would put me right off. Taken many a noob out for days - even a week of them, but we went our separate ways at knocking off.

No! Unless it was Andy Carrol or Robbie Savage, then I’d think about it, but not for long.

Probably not a good idea really. Some drivers would be showing the wrong ropes. Not a good start for a newbie!

When very green behind the ears I had a night out with a driver doing a wide load to the channel tunnel.
Everyone in the yard had informed the driver I was (for the sake of the PC brigade)a woofter and had also informed me the driver was not a stranger to biteing a pillow or two.

Anyway it was an interesting few days but both of us seemed very nervous the first night until we realised the yard gang had been winding us both up… well one of us anyway

There are 2 issues here, first of all, if the boss told you to do it, you have 2 choices, agree, or walk away, cos its not your truck. 2. I certainly would, to give a newbie a chance, there is very little training in this industry to start with, and i think a newbie could do with all the help he can get. How many times have you read on T/N about newbies passing their test, but not able to find employment, or at least to put it on the back burner, so if companies were more willing to help out, it would surely be an advantage to anyone wanting to join the industry.
