Goldfinger:
Is it really worth coming back to HGV ring after a 3 year ‘break’■■
Either to just do an odd shift at the weekend, or to totally jump ship straight back into it?
Just got me thinking, as the job I’m in seems to be getting heavier now - or I’m getting older and starting to feel it…
Thoughts…?
if at all possible, stay out of the driving game completely. learn a new skill, there must be something you always wanted to do… so do it
I’ve been out of it now 18 months, don’t miss it one bit…

I’m with DD, I’ve had nearly 25 years away from it doing the job I’m in at the moment. I do a few days with a local company to keep my eye in and in three years I will return full time but will have the luxury to work part time if I so wish. Not for everyone but I enjoy it and can’t keep away.
It all depends on your circumstances and what you want from the job.
If you want a good work/life balance I’d say you’re unlikely to get that in the driving world, but it’s the only job that you get paid to sit back, relax and enjoy the view

If it’s in your blood and you enjoy it and your existing job is getting too much then yes. I know people who went back to driving after 10 or 12 years, they mention the lack of stress with driving compared to their previous job but then that’ll depend on what type of driving you get into.
I’ve not driven for a year and a half now, miss the good bits but not the bad, I think I’ll only go back if things get desperate.
As for the comments about being on here…like I said, it’s in your blood…
I look on here almost every day just out of interest and to keep up to date with changes etc,
and if there’s a post that I can help with then I will.
Do let us know what you decide.
If you’ve still got all your licenses and are ready to rock’n’roll then maybe knock around some agencies, do the odd bit of work or weekends and see how it feels
I’ve been out of the game just over 2 years and miss driving more and more as time goes on, however, There isn’t a company anywhere that provides the kind of job I want that suits my wants and needs.

Got shafted by agencies as I was leaving the job… (Fingers burnt), so I’d prefer to steer clear of them if possible, unless it was because I signed with the wrong ones…
Only thing I’ll need (up to now) is my CPC card, as I left literally weeks before the company I was stitched up by / worked for started the training…
As for the job I’m in ATM… As I said, it’s either getting too heavy (manual lifting etc), or I’m just getting too old for it now…

No worries mate, I’m sure there are plenty of companies willing to take on drivers for some odd days here and there.
The beauty of this sector is there is a lot of variety.
I also still likethe driving game but if you only drive from time to time you have to factor in the cost of DCPC ,digi card and medicals. Then after all of that ,is it worth the hassle?
If you don’t “need” to come back to it, just hold out until you find a good not for profit firm, with good t’s and c’s. Do your homework on for profit firms, don’t jump in willy nilly. There are some worth working for, but they’re not easy to find and tend to recruit through existing staff. As a rule, avoid anyone advertising on dot gov websites, as these jobs tend to be the bottom of the ladder. Avoid the agency route, unless it’s just weekend shifts at a local Sainsbury’s or Asda (provided it’s in house transport) around your current job. This can be a route into a good job. It’s really about knocking on doors in your situation, and not diving into some low paid, treat you like a dog environment.

People that enjoy the job will carry on doing what they need to to keep driving i suppose, but those who do it part time (such as retirees to subsidise their meagre pensions) for financial need might disappear rapidly from the pool of experienced reliable peak period drivers, and i expect this latter group to have quite an effect on the industry as time goes by.
Sensible companies who realise how valuable good drivers are will i suspect be very flexible with still working part time reliable competent known retirees, and still pay for their DCPCs licences digi cards and medicals as they do for the full timers, always going to be a safer bet than the unknown quantity an agency might send in and the costs neglible in the grand scheme of things, one minor crunch avoided will more than pay for the statutory admin/running costs of half a dozen reliable part time retirees, everyone wins except the agency so a double bonus.
