Worth Coming Back To Driving..?

Goldfinger:
‘Not For Profit’ type jobs…■■

Can you give me an example / pointer Jay??

Not for profit job example: A window manufacturer that have a few wagons of their own just delivering their own stuff so don’t actually make money from transport but from the stuff they make. So they don’t generally care if it takes you all day to do 2 deliveries.

I also still likethe driving game but if you only drive from time to time you have to factor in the cost of DCPC ,digi card and medicals. Then after all of that ,is it worth the hassle?

People that enjoy the job will carry on doing what they need to to keep driving i suppose, but those who do it part time (such as retirees to subsidise their meagre pensions) for financial need might disappear rapidly from the pool of experienced reliable peak period drivers, and i expect this latter group to have quite an effect on the industry as time goes by.

Sensible companies who realise how valuable good drivers are will i suspect be very flexible with still working part time reliable competent known retirees, and still pay for their DCPCs licences digi cards and medicals as they do for the full timers, always going to be a safer bet than the unknown quantity an agency might send in and the costs neglible in the grand scheme of things, one minor crunch avoided will more than pay for the statutory admin/running costs of half a dozen reliable part time retirees, everyone wins except the agency so a double bonus.

A lot to be said for that…I always take the summer off (only do 2 days a week anyways) I went back and after a week decided that I had to get out of it, too many idiots on the roads etc. So I go back to see the firm I was on for and they are giving me weekends as requested and as and when I want them, I am cheaper than the agency and know the ropes, don`t moan, do the job and have yet to damage anything…I just hope I start to enjoy it again.

Only if you’ve got no other option.

Otherwise you’d need your head testing to want to do this lark day in and day out.

This industry’s in the bin now mate. Even in the short space of 3 years, you’re bound to notice some changes if you decide to come back.

And it’s only going to get even worse.

Cheers pish…

Might just start with an odd day here and there first, just to see how good / bad it’s got.

Then take it from there…

Interesting though, got to go to another farm next week to dig a 1000 metres of drainage across a field…

Wonder if machine operator would be a better option…?

Financially probably not depending on what skills you have.
But I still hanker to get another wagon after a six yr break even though I am earning a fortune more now in comparison. The cab and the road keeps calling, perhaps I should try to get the licence renewed !

ARLA in Aylesbury are advertising on the local radio for in house drivers , days or nights at present. It says to go to their website for info.

There is nothing worse than seeing a over 65 retired driver working a few days a week driving a truck, job is hard enough without having to do that when you retire, think I would find something easer to kill my days or earn a extra few bob

In house supermarkets, not working with xpo/esl/dhl etc. Same for arla with the milk, get on direct rather than bidvest etc. Manufacturing firms, if there’s any left. It’s not easy to find one of these jobs, but you’ve got less chance of working for someone who represents Cartley

Theres loads worse. The job isnt hard. You pay no NI after retirement age. Some drivers love the job. When you retire its nice to keep your hand in. If you dont stay active you will seize up or worse.
Hourses for courses but topping up your pension doing a job you enjoy cant be bad surely.

I plan on keeping me hand in after retirement, health permitting obviously, maybe a couple of days on the limp would be good to keep me out the allotment and strip clubs.

Similar to what someone said to me ages ago…

If you totally ‘stop’ come retirement time - you’ll DIE!!! :open_mouth:
