With the state of the haulage industry in general, all of them have to max out the hours, to get the extra loads in, to make it pay, what with the extra payments on fuel, drivers wages etc, they have to make a living, and the only way is to work longer hours, or increase the rates, and with so much competition, they will be told where to go.
It is however illegal for a planner to plan a 15 hr day, but expect their drivers to work the hours needed to finish the job, which is always the max, 3 x 15 + 2 x 10. We are only supposed to work a max of 48, increased to 60, yet average 70/80/90, because of the way the law was written it does not include time tipping/loading, and as i have always said, install clocks, clock in, then check the actual hours on duty, that would shock a lot of officials, but we all know it will not happen.
tell me where it is illegal to plan a 15 hr day, under what rule are you saying it is
I believe it is MMTM (RDC) 11/13 Article 2(x10)
I hope this helps.
coffee can’t find that whats its full title would love to show my boss
I don’t have a printed copy unfortunately so cannot check for you. However, the audio version is available at any RDC near you.

i am out tramping all week and do my 3x15 every week, its just part of the job, loads have to be done so you just get on and do it. but i knew that it was going to be like that when i took the job on. and having done tramping for too many years its just a way of life
I have not seen a job tramping that only invoved 3 shifts yet… It always seems to be 4 from 7? The money offered seems to be lower than that for nights, and they expect you to work across a weekend as well. Where the hell are the £700+ jobs I keep hearing about?
I could imagine doing 3 from 7, so you see what to me is a huge stumbling block for a family man who wants the money without too much time away from home!
It it normal for a tramper to get paid 15 hours for each full day out? I’d hate the idea of being paid 13 hours, and then unpaid for the 11 hours rest bit - or longer if you’re getting the jobs done earlier in the day!

If you’re really worried about that you need to go on a salaried job, where you’re paid by the day. Last time I looked that comprised 24 hours so you won’t miss out.

I think it is the way of the world, not many office jobs are paid while you are asleep either, at least we do get paid to sleep in the office

It will always be thus, too many blokes with no home or other life nearly in tears if they can’t ‘get the hours in’.
Instead of drivers via their reps or unions negotiating a decent pay and hours package they still insist on working every hour they can get, far better than negotiating a 48 hour salaried week, bonkers the lot of them.
For those old enough, remember the days of log books when a 12 and half hour spread was your maximum working day, (yes some then used to run bent but not all), then we got safety wise and joined the EU and got…a 15 hour day instead…brilliant.
Bloody lorry drivers are their own worse enemy, we’ll never get good hours and conditions for everyone cos the silly buggers can’t see any further than their noses.
AT LAST!! A MAN THAT TALKS SENSE, agree with every thing you have said, and lot of drivers today treat the max hours as a target NOT a limit, and you see them sat on tickover waiting and watching for the last second of their daily rest to end, FFS there IS a life out there. (tin hat being applied as I speak )

they are the fools that insist that hourly pay is normal.

No, it’s true. If the German police catch you working a 15 hour day, they will put you in a hotel, bill your employer for it and then draw a chalk line around your truck.
What IS this thing about drawing chalk lines around trucks? - Is this one of those “Think of the Children” items, as I cannot imagine the reason is to register if the truck has driven away anywhere… It’s not as if you can’t park it back in exactly the same space afterwoulds?
… Well, maybe if you were at Cambridge Services you’d need a chalk mark just to reserve your space whilst going for a p!$$ for your 15…
am i missing something? or is winseer the only lorry driver in the UK that hasn’t heard the tesco, chalk, and police were called story?
but if someone tells him, just remember to think of the children.

It comes from an old case that went to crown court when a bloke wearing a hiviz vest and an air of authority tried to make a lorry driver move his truck whilst he was on a daily rest period. The police were called and they arrested the manager and the gateman. The driver was also arrested and released after finding him a hotel room. Since that case, the police have used special coloured chalk to mark the tyres of lorries in a similar situation. Have you never heard of a silent check?
You can find the original case notes in most RDC and goods in departments if you ask.

I work max 11 hour shifts now! StobartRail! No planning as such as it’s 4 or 5 boxes each way between Maritime Tilbury and Tesco Purfleet!
11 hours daily rest means a 13 hour working day! Unless you choose to reduce to 9 hours of course!
Can’t say I’d fancy the snoozability factor of driving up the same short bit of road 10 times a day!

It’s more a Shunters run! What with drop and swaps! Split coupling each time aswell! A driving job it ain’t! Anyone know of a decent tramping job?
IMCO 15 x 3 +13 x 2 and a run in sat or out Sun are a bare minimum you should be doing if your tramping , you might aswell its not worth going home, just treat it like a work all week, family at weekends life, at least you are not travelling to and from work everyday in the traffic.

This is what I see. And, like you’ve also pointed out, I require at LEAST 35 mins to work and 45 mins home if I’m in Trafford Park. So that’s 1hr 20 on a normal working day.
If in the truck, earn as much as possible, then go for a meal at the weekend on extra earnings and enjoy the time with the family.
