Worked quite a few Christmas days in the past. Always loaded souther Spain Xmas eve mirning then run back up.for boxing day boat from Calais or morning boat 27th ex Cherbourg. Good craic as a rule. Spent a few Christmas nights in Sunbilla with free foid and drink for being good customers throughout the year. Possibly the worst Christmas day on the road was when I ran from Fred’s at Coslada to Sunbilla for the night ( catching boat 27th so loads of time ) & parked up about 14:30 in heavy snow to find a soft tyre on the fridge. No choice but to change it in the snow and slush thinking to myself “I must get a proper job”…
Still thinking the same…
When I was in retail, I was the closest manager to the store, (only one within walking distance) only went in to change the video tapes for the cctv, quick walk of the perimeter and check the fridge computer to see if any were alarming out.
Used to get a healthy wad for it, missus thought it took hours. But that was because certain boozers in town used to open up Christmas Day for their regulars, by invitation only.
The problem with drivers or anyone working christmas day for normal money is that companies will expect everyone to do the same.
The same thing has happenend with bank holidays and sundays.
I’m working it again this year, 3rd one on the bounce. I am on a truck but it will be sat on its rail gear not its rubbers
Xmas eve, xmas day and boxing day, all on nights will top line IRO £4000 plus digs, travel and food provided plus 2 days off in leiu. Will be 5 nights in total (other 2 are on normal salary) replacing the overhead wires with a conductor beam under St Pancras station.
Not working next year though ![]()
