Working Christmas day

Santa:
Alright for you lot - I have to get over to Kiribati on Christmas Eve to start, and then it’s all go for a full 24 hour shift, with a final drop in American Samoa. Always have to watch out for the sneaky kids who nip over from one Samoa to the other, trying to get two prezzies.

Are you excempt from drivers hours regs or classed as out of scope…

More importantly I have been very good this year (well as long as you don’t check my internet history) please bring me the two strippers I requested last year whilst sat on your knee. Oh and is it possible to return a wooden train set that broke circa 1970’s…

Also how are you finding things with all the extra Elf & Safety issues.

Pat Hasler:
Our company issued our latest pay increase last week, we all get an increase in pay per mile (which will make absolutely no difference to my pay for the 6th year running). Among the new pay perks it says a $70.00 bonus will be paid for delivering on Christmas day, now hold on ! Note the term ‘Delivering’ if you are driving to a destination but not actually delivering that day you get nothing
I have never and will never work on Christmas day, Americans do not celebrate Boxing day (another day I will not work) and I am amazed how drivers here will actually start work at midnight on Christmas day :open_mouth: NOT GONNA HAPPEN.
In fact this boxing day I will be in England

Is july 4th the big one in the states pat  is that classed as a holliday

Big Holidays in U.S.A July 4th - Independence Day / Labour Day early Sept / Thanksgiving in Nov. Think that’s about right  Pat will be along shortly to correct me

When I was on the papers, I was happy to do the Xmas day run - 6pm run down to the printers to deliver Boxing Day papers to the Wholesalers (the only day papers didn’t print was Xmas Eve); was on triple time, plus a day off in lieu.

Easy money, and the roads were quiet…!

We work Christmas on a volantry basis , any shift worked between Christmas eve night and the 2nd January is paid at 36hrs and a day in lieu ,

We don’t and I wouldn’t work Xmas day. Family time. Money can’t replace that and it’s time you’ll never get back.

My kids are all grown up so i work the shifts I want to , then its down to the travel agents to book a months holiday for me and the misses somewhere nice and hot for January/February

I was always prepared to work Christmas day, both as full time or agency. I merely requested £25ph, which is somewhat less than triple time in most areas, more akin to double time and a half for the rates I’m used to normally.

In 25 years - I’ve yet to actually be given Christmas day however. Even the “compulsary ones” handed out at flat rate - got given to someone who had NOT made themselves available as I had…

Less is more. :sunglasses:

Doesn’t Christmas start around July / August??

That’s around when I see the first trees, decorations and toys (that could be classed for Xmas) etc in the shops.

Oh and yes, us at work have seen our first house with it’s tree up just last week! :open_mouth:

…that wasn’t a tree - it’s a Rocket for Halloween that just happens to be made out of a tannenbaum, and other Christmassy tat. :stuck_out_tongue:

Not everybody has happy family times at Christmas though.

On top of those that already do, I bet there are plenty more people who would happily volunteer to work Christmas Day for a good wedge, but won’t because they care what others think.

For me, I rather be earning on that day.

Double time for Xmas day? I used to do New Years Day and was always on triple time for that.

My place pay triple and I don’t think that is excessive for any employer that gives a rats ■■■ about it’s drivers.

God only knows what it’d take to get Contraflow into work on Christmas Day. :open_mouth:

maga:
you must be crackers to want to work xmas day :open_mouth:

Defo. I’d rather be PULLING crackers than BE crackers.

peirre:
As someone who doesn’t celibrate Xmas (and not everyone does) I’d work on the day if needed.

You may not celebrate Christmas (in which case you’ve just made the baby Jesus cry) but it’s definitely an opportunity to spend some time with family.

I’ve worked it before, drove from Novgorod to Moscow, it felt a bit strange writing 25/12 on the tacho card but other than that it was just a normal working day, Russia celebrates Christmas on 6th January.

I’d work it now if there was any work to do, I’m definitely in the “Bah Humbug” club when it comes to Christmas. As it is, there isn’t, so I’ll just spend Christmas Day on my narrowboat and treat it just like any other day, do a trip to Hilmorton Locks and back maybe, I certainly won’t be roasting a turkey with Calor gas at nearly £20 for a 4.5kg bottle. :stuck_out_tongue:

Stuff that I’m flying out to benidorm 4am Boxing Day.

No thought for the poor saps that have to work Christmas day to get you there?

Federal holidays in the US which equates to national holidays are

New Years Day
Martin Luther King Day
Presidents Day
Memorial Day
Independence Day
Labor Day
Columbus Day
Veterans Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

but no Boxing Day like the Canadians have and I,ll still be stuffing the turkey with Paxo sage and onion

I start the first of my 5 shifts on xmas day. picking up milk from farms for wincanton. double time plus day of in liew

I worked Xmas day for 7 years in a row. Treble time and job and knock, left yard at 7pm and home by midnight. No traffic and Boxing Day off .
