Very wise words and more should follow your example, live to your means leads to a happier life.
There’s so much pressure on people these days to have “the latest thing” and along with that pressure is the subliminal message that having that thing makes someone a superior person.
I have a mobile phone. It’s a 20 year old Nokia. It makes phone calls. I’ve lost count of how many people have sneered at it when their “latest thing” phone needs charging twice a day rather than twice a week, doesn’t get a signal where mine does and costs them £120 a month.
Same with my car. Gets me to work and back every day, would do a 500 mile trip tomorrow if I wanted it to but it’s an 05 plate and not a 71 plate. But on the plus side it doesn’t cost me a week’s wages every month just to watch it depreciating.
We’re all different. That’s just my take on things. The problems always arise when people take on long-term financial commitments without asking themselves what would happen if their circumstances changed for the worse.

Looks like we’re on the same page there…
“Low overheads” has always served me rather better than “higher wages”.

Fair enough I can how you thought that. My credit rating is so low now I couldn’t get credit if I tried anymore, which is a good thing! I used to worry myself sick over debt and paying it but now when they threaten County Court Judgements I just laugh and think join the queue!
I don’t have very much, a 36 year old narrowboat, a 17 year old car, a 10 year old 125cc motorcycle and a 42 year old moped but also I do not have one single penny of debt, no mortgage, no bank loans, no credit card debt, no car finance, nothing. Every single penny I earn is mine to do exactly as I wish with.
And as an expression I once read has it “What you don’t owe can’t keep you awake at night”.
Thats absolutely the way to do it, debtless but with a roof over your head you own no bugger has any hold over you.
It amazes me when i see the new seriously expensive cars in the works car park, another few months later some of them have got fed up of the 6 month old one and bought another bugger, i’d have the screaming abdabs seeing car dealers trousering half my hard earned for a modern car, and i can’t stand modern cars anyway.

More than me! But far from being a poor me I don’t want any possessions
Had a 13 year old car changed it 2 years ago the only reason being it was getting a bit difficult to get in and out, just change our 14-15 year old TV only because it was getting slower to warm up and the picture started to decrease in size. Like you I owe nobody nothing.only outgoings are the usual bills that all households have.
As long as your saving something I don’t think there’s anything wrong with treating yourself ,I like old cars but I don’t want a wolsley1500 as my daily car , I prefer the focus , memories will do , same as my days of changing Capri axles / gearboxes / engines , I enjoyed it , but I’ve no interest now , checking oil / water / washers will do
I do bulk at &20/ 30 k for a car , but that’s a old thing , my first house was £7k so £30 k for a car seems a rip off to me , but if mrs wanted a new st for 28k I’d buy her one ( though every time we look at cars she prefers her current one )
If your saving & can afford new cars / tv etc then why not , if the new car / phone comes before saving / heating / food then no
Nb if someone offered me my primera gtle with the chomflair ( purple / green / brown ) paint in exchange for my focus I’d bite there hand off , same as my Kawasaki kh250 with all speed expansion chambers / bell mouths on , I’d have it back tomorrow , I do keep looking , seen a mint kh400 ( had one ) for £7,995 , so tempted , but mrs said that’s awful , prefers modern sports bikes , though she’s not the one who’s ride it
I am 74 just passed medical, I do a few days now and then,I could do a lot more I choose not to .The gov have just said that the over 50s may not be required to pay tax . Is that fair to the people you would work alongside I THINK NOT for that reason I will not do it…I am lucky I have no debt (that should be your aim quick as possible) not being forced to do something is a good feeling .I have heard there are nine million not working for one reason or another …PIP,POP and all the rest of benefits look like life would be ok so as to dismiss work as for those that like doing it but it is time these cases were looked at again there can not be that many
If the government are asking for the 50 plus to come out of retirement and what has been said about our work shy young uns not wanting to work, this country is ■■■■■■ basically then.

The over 50s that voted for Brexit can come out of retirement and replace the European workers they sent back.

(sorry for using the B word)
If that was actually true, why would anyone want to come out of retirement and go back to work?
I need to work far less post-Brexit because of the increase in pay so why would there be any advantage to any truck driver in bringing back the eastern European Low Pay Brigade?

I have a funny feeling that this “Economic Downturn” may well affect the over 50 workforce (actually working right now) to the UPSIDE, whilst crushing under it’s jackboot the ordinary “Office Waller” and 9-5 jobsworth… A selective recession indeed - if that should come to pass, eh?
There’s no sign that interest rates are going to stop rising, making mortgages more expensive each and every month.
There’s no sign that the government is going to take the energy firms to task for “playing the energy futures market and losing”, then trying to replace that money by deliberately overcharging people not only for their energy - but for their outrageously high direct debits now required of hapless customers as well.
There’s no sign any legal action whatsoever will be done to those pension outfits about to pay out on millions of people due to retire in the next five years - that have lost a full THIRD of their cashpots by ALSO "playing the INTEREST RATE FUTURES MARKET - and losing.
Don’t blame Gone-Chancellor Kwasi for precipitating the market move that made these pension outfits lose OUR shirts… A sudden rise in interest rates, with the whole herd having bet the ranch that rates wouldn’t go above 2% any time soon…
Robert Maxwell once bet the Mirror Group Pension Fund that the “Pound wouldn’t go below $2.00 to the pound” exchange rate when it got as high as $2.12 at the end of the 1980’s…
With the Deep State of the day seriously profiting from Maxwells ■■■■-up of playing the market and losing - the “Fire Break” of Maxwell’s immediate execution “Spectre Style” - made sure that no one would ever ask the question “Where did the lost millions of the busted pension fund - actually end up?” In already-rich people’s pockets, like it always bleedin well does!
Who’s blaming Sunak’s administration for what has aleady been blamed on the gone Truss outfit?
People don’t even realize they’ve lost a third of their pension yet - but I’ve already had the letter at the turn of the year…
Anyone else got theirs yet?
THAT is the “Conspiracy to get over 50’s back to work”. “Can’t afford to retire - now.”

It’s not the European truck drivers that need replacing. Fancy a job as a nurse? [emoji23]

I don’t know if you keep up with the news, but nurses are currently striking for the first time in their history, because of the reduction in their living standards over the last two decades. If your solution to this issue is to bring in cheaper labour rather than to increase their pay, then I respectfully disagree with you.
Eu membership was a huge bonus for the controlling class at the expense of the working class.

It doesn’t have to be cheaper though?

It wasn’t “Remain or Brexit” that were the bad deals - it was the way the globalist establishment MADE them BOTH bad deals for the ordinary UK worker.
“Remain” had us donating billions to EU for precious little in return, other than “Lip Service”.
“Brexit” promised us a future that has yet to be delivered - that very future BLOCKED by ongoing actions against this country both sides of our parliament in favour of just that, don’t forget.
The way to bring down ANY government at the end of the day - is to kill people and not be thrown in jail for it.
The Establishment has already killed plenty, and now the retaliation of the Unions - will ensure the same public caught in the cross-fire - lose a few more citizens in the name of the “Good Cause” that is “snuffing it to bring the Tories down”.
2 years from now - it’ll all be happening again, should Keir Starmer find himself in Number 10 - and STILL unwilling to give the unions what they want.
Money for public works, public services, and public-serving programmes. Lots of it. At the expense of JUST the Elites. No one else. Not ever.

This ^^^ some of my best mates at work and guys who I have a lot of time for are EE. The majority of EE workers where I am opted to stay. I’ve certainly never made them feel unwelcome, on the contrary, they intend to live their entire lives here, their kids are in the British school system, they pay British taxes and shop in British shops. What’s not to like?
I’d far rather them than the feckless British spunktrumpets who hang about outside Spoons drinking special brew with a dog on a piece of string.
