or however you spell it! Lol.
Do you need c+e to drive above using a tri axle trailer or just grandfather rights??
And i mean a proper speed boat not a rowing boat, lol. No it’s not for me.

I have always believed that it depends on its weight…and in some circumstances you need a hgv licence
However !!..i went to a show in kent a while back and there was a new motorhome for sale, i obviously looked inside, and the salesman told me that it was right on the length limit before a hgv licence was required…yet 2 weeks ago a friend told me that a motorhome is a leisure vehicle, and regardless of its size, can be driven on a car licence…i disagreed…but no doubt someone on here will be able to tell us the right answers…i gotta know soon …cos when i win the lotto…i`m gonna buy the biggest RV you have ever seen…and want to know if i need a hgv to drive it.
same rules as a lorry I am afraid. So yes this “friend” will need C+E
AFAIK it’s done on number of seats first, then weight.
More than 8 passenger seats, then it’s a “bus” (or minibus, <16 pass seats) regardless of the weight.
8 or fewer passenger seats, more than 3.5 Tonnes, then it requires C (or C1, <7.5 T)
So, I suppose technically, an 8 tonne motorhome could be driven on a pre-97 car licence providing it has 9 passenger seats, because of the D1 entitlement.
But if it had 8 seats then you’d need a full-blown ‘C’ HGV licence to drive it

It works on the maximum authorised mass MAM. and if you passed your driving test before 1st January 1997 I believe you can only drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8.25 tonnes MAM. They also have entitlement to drive a minibus with a trailer over 750kgs MAM
7500kg Winnebago
750kg Trailer
8250kg MAM
When you say speed boat what do you mean, a RIB with say 200-300bhp? As far as i know size doesn’t come into it, its all about the weight. You could always just do c1+e test as that would bring your license up to 12000kgs if using a trailer but doubt a caravan could pull that.

That’s right, but I don’t believe the 8.25 weight limit applies to minibuses and combinations, which was my (admittedly very hypothetical ) point. Certainly there’s no weight restriction code on my folks’ licence next to the D1 category. Apart from the “not for hire/reward” restriction it’s a full and proper minibus licence.
Minibus and trailer combinations have a 12 tonne limit. Minibuses on their own appear to have no weight limit at all!: eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/Lex … 39:EN:HTML
It would seem a 20 tonne “minibus” could be driven on a pre-97 licence. Just not with a trailer.
I would say that if the vehicle is your private property then you dont need a vocational licence to drive it.If you are young and passed your test after 1997 then you would need trailer entitlement.
i moved this last week the guy got stopped by vosa and was told
he needs a bigger trailer the boat was to heavy for it but if he did that
his mitsi animal 4x4 would be no good so he is going to get us in when
needed

I found this in my inbox after 3 pints of Adnams.
C1+E with 107 code (max 8.250 tonnes) means
7.5 MGW + 750kgs MGW
or for example
5.5 MGW + 2.75 MGW
If driving motorhome + trailer then both GVWs added together must not
exceed 8.250 tonnes if on C1+E with 107 code
Hmm, looks a lovely boat, those in-boards are trouble though. Had a V8 Broom Capricorn few year back went like stink! No wonder you were called in, expect his brakes were getting a bit hot down hill with that on the back of his pick-up!

I do hope not, otherwise we will have loads of wannabee chris eubankers
It used to be that any vehicle that was for private use only could be driven on a car licence and in fact you could drive a huge mobile crane with as many wheels as possible and as much of a max load as possible too on a agricultural tractor licence.
Before I moved here i drove for a show company with a rigid Scania pulling a exhibition trailer, it was in fact over the legal max for an HGV at 66ft but was exempt because it was a travelling exhibition, although we all ran to tacho laws and used them we were infact exempt from those laws also and could(if the company and insurance policy allowed it) driven them on a car licence … riddiculous laws
Over here a friend of mine bought a 3 axled 50ft motorhome, it was a Provost bus basically with 4 pull outs, it had a 450 ■■■■■■■ engine and he towed a trailer with his car on. He just had a regular car licence. The whole set up was 65 ft long also.

Number of seats is the criteria for PCV’s other vehicles use MAM so it’s not a question of priority. Motorhomes aren’t PCVs so it’s the weight that’s relevant:

Blimey Malc, it was quite a coincidence how that came just when you needed verification!!
Just in case you weren’t too sure, I noticed a very handy built-in scenario too!!

Saw this or something exactly the same happen about 4-5 weeks ago , Police pulled into Shepshed followed very closely by a bloke with a speedboat on a trailer behind a black Mitsubushi pickup, plod left after about 10 minutes and pick-up driver looked decidedly racked-off.

I’m sure motorhomes can have more than 8 passenger seats.
My point was just that, on Grandfather Rights, something more than 7.5 tonnes could be driven as long as it’s a “minibus” and not a “goods’ vehicle”. So an 8 tonne vehicle with 10 seats could be driven on a pre-97 licence, but one with only 9 seats would require a full HGV licence.
Now I know that a winnebago only has 2 seats I realise that wasn’t a particularly helpful contribution
I would be very surprised if this wasn’t in C+E.
It’s too heavy for C1 and thus grandfather rights on a car licence.
It doesn’t have enough seats for D.
The trailer is unlikely to weigh less than 750kg so it can’t be driven without +E.
as long as a vehicle is not used for hire or reward and only for social and domestic and liesure then there are no restrictions on the size or weight and can be driven on a normal car licence and normal m.o.t. in the u.k. jak.

if the boat trailer mgw is 3500kgs then you can not tow with a pick up because most uk spec ones can only
tow 2250 kgs you will need a landcruiser or something like it that can tow 3500kgs
then the body length of the trailer excluding a frame must not be more than 7mtrs and if for hire reward
then a tacho is required
