jak:
as long as a vehicle is not used for hire or reward and only for social and domestic and liesure then there are no restrictions on the size or weight and can be driven on a normal car licence and normal m.o.t. in the u.k. jak.
Can you point us to some laws that says this please?

That’s incorrect sorry dude. On a B category licence in the UK you can only drive a vehicle with a maximum authorised mass of 3500kg, anything more than that and you need to look into the HGV licences.
Irrespective if the vehicle is for private or commercial use you will need to have the correct category on you licence for the weight of the vehicle you are going to drive.
Have a look at the direct gov website. It gives a list of all the categories and the weight limits that apply to each one.
STEVE THE RED:
i moved this last week the guy got stopped by vosa and was told
he needs a bigger trailer the boat was to heavy for it but if he did that
his mitsi animal 4x4 would be no good so he is going to get us in when
needed
if the boat trailer mgw is 3500kgs then you can not tow with a pick up because most uk spec ones can only
tow 2250 kgs you will need a landcruiser or something like it that can tow 3500kgs
then the body length of the trailer excluding a frame must not be more than 7mtrs and if for hire reward
then a tacho is required
the japs make the best pick ups allegedly but the land rover defender pick up is the only pick up that will pull a 3.5 ton trailer my 110 van will run at 7 ton train weight, 3.5 ton van + 3.5 ton trailer.
the weight that matters is the one on the trailer plate not what it weighs (as long as it is not over weight) e.g. a car with permitted maximum trailer weight of 1200kg towing a trailer with a maximum weight of 2800kg even if it weigh 750kg empty it is illegal

This has always been my standpoint but when pressed, I was unable to find this in legislation anywhere.
There was a rather long debate on one of the Land Rover forums about whether the plated weight of the trailer would render your convoy illegal if the tow car wasn’t type-approved for that weight - even if the trailer physically weighed less than the TA rating.
I couldn’t find anything concrete at the time.
As a result there are a number of members of that forum towing in situations like that and just ensuring that their actual weights are within the limits. Remains to be seen what happens if one is stopped.
