Why?????

can guarantee you right now that if you come down a slip road matching my speed and expect me to move into lane 2 for you then you’ll be going for long drive down the hard shoulder

If he’s flashed me in and I can see that I’m clear of him then I’ll pull in and thank him. If he’s happy driving with a 12" gap then fine. He’s the one that’ll be at fault if I have to anchor on and he goes into the back of me

I am shocked at your answers and attitude towards road users. I hope I don’t use the same motorways as you. In my opinion your selfish and inconsiderate and are an accident waiting to happen. The only reason you probably haven’t had an accident yet is for people like myself who have to make allowances for people like you on our roads. A bit of common curtesy for your fellow truckers is the order of the day!

Not impressed at all. Nige

You beat me to it Nige, it’s bad enough with out getting grief from ‘one of our own’ :sunglasses:

Nor me, Nige. There is just no care or thought for anyone else these days, is there? :frowning:

I don’t care whose ‘right of way’ it is. If I can move over safely to lane two to avoid another driver having to slow right down I will do so. I call it courtesy. I’m not in a race. If said driver joining then decides to hold me out in lane two, I mutter a few words under my breath, ease off and drop in beind. It’s really no big deal.

JamesC, flying_fenman good for you!

I won’t let people like this change my ways as being a considerate driver. I will always move over to let a vehicle off from a slip road if it is safe and possible to do so.

If I am entering the motorway from a slip road and a fellow trucker does the same I will then allow him to continue to overtake me and then flash him in. I also give him a friendly wave on his way past. 9 out of 10 times I get one back. If he doesn’t move over I will adjust speed accordingly but 9 out of ten will move over unless they are also being overtaken.

The other day I was driving down the M5 when a tipper truck entered from the slip road and we was travelling side by side cab to cab. I thought he may have slowed down for me as I let him in but he didn’t. I didn’t curse him or anything…After about 40 seconds I gradually started to ease off and then indicate so I could pull in behind him. There wasn’t anything behind me for about 150 yards ( a fellow trucker) He must have seen us and he then flashed me in and I thanked him with a flick of my indicators.

It costs nothing to be a considerate driver and in the process can be a lot safer than trying to battle on down the road for miles until one finally gives in…or not as the case may be. I will never change… I have been like this since passing my car test and have just adopted the same attitude for driving trucks.

Stay safe Nige

Wow it seams ive unearthed a big can of worms here & ive been too busy the last couple of days to catch up on the gossip/debate, contrary to what it appears I am a very cortious driver probably to cortious but any way I shall comant below & re read the post again.

Just to add a bit of fuel to this debate  - If you pull into lane 2 and let the other lorry coming out of the slip into lane 1 and it then sits just behind your rear and flashes you in - do you go in with only a few feet gap or do you stay in lane 2? - what if the lane 1 lorry does not back off? - how long do you stay in lane 2?

This should stir it a bit :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

If he’s flashed me in and I can see that I’m clear of him then I’ll pull in and thank him. If he’s happy driving with a 12" gap then fine. He’s the one that’ll be at fault if I have to anchor on and he goes into the back of me.

Will he… the driver moving in would have deliberately made the situation dangerous

Tough! Personally I would leave it longer before pulling in, but if they flash then they’re clearly happy for you to pull in so I will do. But it’s all neither here nor there anyway because I don’t pull out to let others join, unless there’s vast difference in speed and I know I could get past and get back into lane 1 before they start accelerating up my inside. :unamused:

I can agree with both side’s here but the highway code clearly states that flashing your headlights is a warning but despite that most peolple have become accustmed in there every day life to flash someone weather it be to alow them to pull in on a motorway our alow them to pul out of a side road. Now taking that into account there have been several incidents of one driver flashing another to say yep go ahead & then an accident results & finds that the driver who flashed their lights has caused the accident another big can of worms how you may ask, its assumed the driver who flashed has assessed the raod & taken full responsibilaty that the way is clear.

Hence the lack of curtisy on the raod after youve passed a truck or ignorance but me personally I DO NOT use my headlights to flash another driver in unless there are no slip roads around & im in the left lane. As for in town i just dont do it If im gonna stop to let someone turn accross the front of me & providing i cant go nowhere the i will just stop & leave a gap & then its up to the other driver to decide, if they dont make that decision then i will move on.

Dont we just love those worms

He had ignorance writtten all over him , thats why I didn’t bother …
26 post and giving it the biggun and the making massive assumptions over other peoples posts !!!
Full of his own self , reading the posts wrong ,and in turn interpretating (sp) them the wrong way and moulding them how he wants to see it or read it …

More fool you
Someone else does that around here , you should get on well …

Although more than often he makes himself look a idiot too !

Oh I do wonder who think of good sir

I think you are missing the point - you pull in front and brake, the truck you just pulled in front of goes into your rear - police arrive and take witness statements - you made the unsafe move - you end up in court and lose your licence and maybe, causing a death by dangerous driving :open_mouth:

Very true, there is someone on here who had a similar accident on his motorcycle, a sprinter pulled infront of him giving him very little space, and then slammed the anchors on causing him to go into the back. I believe it was split liability, but it was split, because the van gave him no time to brake and create a safe distance.

Problem with what Paul is doing, is that the driver isn’t flashing you in, in the eyes of the law, he’s making you aware of his presence. It’s your decision to interpret him flashing as a signal to move infront, and if in doing so you cut the spacing between you down to sod all, and have to brake sharpish you will be significantly in the wrong.
