why

The world has moved on; what used to be called ‘canteen culture’ is now workplace bullying. In transport and logistics as elsewhere verbal abuse would constitute misconduct and result in disciplinary procedures.

I think people are quite happy to use terms of abuse and dress it up as banter on the internet that they would be too afraid to use at work for fear of the consequences.

I’ll repeat my main point young people are not joining the transport industry, women are under represented and many people thinking of taking up driving read these boards. Using terms like ‘limper’ creates a bad impression; what’s more a false impression as I’ve driven a long time and never been called names at work.

BeakFreak81:

gandalfthegrey:
You can’t believe being called a ‘limper’ would provoke outrage?

That says everything about you and your intelligence; it is not acceptable in the work place to make derogatory remarks about temporary staff.

So why is it acceptable on here?

I’m from the north too and I was taught in my Co Durham childhood that ‘to get respect you have to give respect’.

Denigrating others for your own amusement isn’t banter, it’s bullying. It isn’t acceptable in any other occupation so why should we allow a term like ‘limper’ to gain a foothold in the transport industry?

So what does it say about me and my intelligence?

… my intelligence and me…

If you genuinely think banter in this particular example is bullying, then you clearly illustrate that you have not a clue what bullying is.

You say you did not encounter any in 90 or whenever the hell you started, well I’ll tell you this it was prevealant 11 years earlier when I started, and I have been called a lot worse, and not quite as mild as a ‘limper’ that I can tell you, but nobody bullied me and I definitely did not interpret any of it as bullying.

You say times have changed, you are maybe right, but if drivers go off on one over something like this, is it really a change for the better? Or has the world of ‘Blokes in trucks’ that I have lived in for years, suddenly become a Utopia of Political correctness, where we are not allowed to say certain things in case we ‘offend’ a few delicate little flowers in the job, :unamused: (who I hope to ■■■■ are still in the minority) or is it as how you suggest, in that we are all facing disciplinarys nowadays.

I suggested before that maybe you and the other delicates are in the wrong job, if what I gather is true, I take it back, it’s ME that is in the wrong job.
I have had my eyes opened in these threads, seriously!
I genuinely thought that I knew drivers and their good and bad characteristics, or are the drivers that I know different to some of you lot.

Could we run a poll on how many delicate little flowers are the ‘only child’ ?

Honked:

Christ I hope not as I am just that!
Only child not delicate little flower btw

Well I guess that explains your bullying attitude :grimacing:

I’m sorry but i just think your blowing this out of all proportion.

Your right the world has moved on and in certain aspects not necessarily for the better. You find that alot of people need wrapping up in cotton wool so as not to have their delicate little ego’s bruised by goings on in the big bad world.

Life’s too short to be taking offence to every little dig or jibe aimed our way.

OUCH !

This isn’t political correctness; It is simply treating fellow workers with a little respect. What’s wrong with that? I am not a delicate flower; I am on here posting because I don’t like people being called names. People don’t call me names when I’m at work. I think that my fellow workers treat me as I treat them; with respect. I’m sorry you were spoken to badly in the 1980’s that does not justify or excuse giving out abuse in 2016 either online or at work.

Ffs…I aint giving abuse you ■■■■ !!
(OK that was a joke…irony not bullying :bulb: ) try and see the subtlty of the joke btw before you decide to be offended. :bulb:

Do not be sorry mate, I was NOT spoken to badly in the 80s, I did not take offence, I reacted accordingly and maturely and gave as good back, I was an even bigger arrogant ■■■■ as a 21 yr old than I am now, and it was part of growing up in a man’s world.

However, here’s one for you… I may well have been abused or even bullied if I had shown signs of being offended/hurt/crestfallen/or ■■■■■■ devastated as some have shown themselves up on here to be :bulb: .
Which is what I have been trying to say in this and the other 2 or 3 threads about this cack!

This is getting like pulling teeth. :unamused:

I accept that times were different when you started driving and that if you had responded to ‘banter’ things may have got worse. But it isn’t like that anymore; people do not tease each other or use terms of abuse in the workplace because employers frown upon that kind of behaviour.

So could people just accept that the term ‘limper’ is bad; people don’t use it in the yards so why is it acceptable on here?

Calling someone a ‘limper’ is not as bad as racial abuse, threats of violence etc. but no one who is arguing can convince me that it is not a derogatory expression that could get the person saying it into bother at work.

It is repetitive and boring; but I’ll argue the case. Why sit behind a keyboard and say something about another worker on different terms and conditions that you would not say at work?

I like LGV driving and I like the people I work with, they are all polite, friendly and helpful. No one calls anybody names; I’ve never heard the expression ‘limper’ anywhere other than trucknet.

So why do some drivers need to give the impression on here that yards are rough houses where agency drivers will get stick when that is not the case?

Me,Myself and Irene

gandalfthegrey: This i why i left the blue chip gods DHL to go work for a family firm. The stuff that gets shouted out in the yard etc would definitely make some on here cry. Im ‘only’ 28yrs old and been driving lorries since i was 21 so I don’t think we can blame it solely on the old timers on here stuck in their ways. I go to work to make money and have a laugh, not worry about my next disciplinary over something thats said in jest.

Holy [zb] folks

There is a NEW accessory for the limper. I have noticed it now and again, but it is on the increase. The bag on wheels has been adopted by the temp brigade. I have seen it with my very own mince pies!!

Sat in the cab reading the paper, when I heard this sort of ’ rumbling noise '. Looked up and some agency knob trundles past, hi-viz done up properly, and pulling a bloody tiny suitcase on wheels. WTF are these people playing at?

You have just proved what I have said mate, you use the words ‘teasing’ and ‘abuse’ in the same sentence and context implying that they are the same…They are not! :bulb:

If you have never been even teased in your transport career, you have been more sheltered than I thought at first. :open_mouth:
I am guilty of teasing both on here, in work and home, and in life in general it is in my nature…abusing is NOT in my nature, and neither have I ever been accused of doing so in real life.

As for the forum I never say anything on here I would not to someone’s face, and always made that rule to myself when posting on here, so that is another of your theories blown.

I can only reiterate what I have said, lighten up and do not take all this so seriously, there are REAL issues and problems in this job which would be better concentrated on, for the better of ALL drivers, agency or full time, as I keep saying agsin and a ■■■■ gain :unamused: …We are all the SAME.

It’s why I prefer small companies, and I’ve found in small companies, the biggest ■■■■ take merchants are the ones there getting you out of the [zb] although they’ll still be ripping the ■■■■ The same thing goes on in motor racing and it’s all part of what makes a close knit team.

Perhaps it’s the new flight attendant look. I blame the booking office requesting a trolley dolley and the limper being a tad too literal.

Using the term ‘limper’ in a yard could give rise to a complaint or grievance. Although not a dismissal matter it would be recorded and could be used against the person making the remark. Some may like working in an environment like that I don’t. I don’t think most people like places like that.

I have not been abused or teased when working in transport; I have not had a sheltered life, I try to be polite, friendly and helpful; most importantly I try to do a good job. As I said earlier ‘to get respect you have to give respect’. Generally 99% of people respond in kind.

My point is why do we see the term ‘limper’ all over trucknet? It is not something I’ve ever heard in the real world. Why do people want to give the false impression that agency drivers are given stick?

:open_mouth: Old timers? …I aint wearing cardigan, slippers, and crimplene kecks yet you cheeky sod, and I can more than handle myself.
I am now officially offended under the PCEDL act of 2016 (Political correct and emotionally delicate limpers)
I am feeling quite upset and I do detect a hint of bullying in your post, so you will be hearing from my solicitor forthwith.
It’s great fun being a modern new age trucker
