Using the term ‘limper’ in a yard could give rise to a complaint or grievance. Although not a dismissal matter it would be recorded and could be used against the person making the remark. Some may like working in an environment like that I don’t. I don’t think most people like places like that.

I have not been abused or teased when working in transport; I have not had a sheltered life, I try to be polite, friendly and helpful; most importantly I try to do a good job. As I said earlier ‘to get respect you have to give respect’. Generally 99% of people respond in kind.

My point is why do we see the term ‘limper’ all over trucknet? It is not something I’ve ever heard in the real world. Why do people want to give the false impression that agency drivers are given stick?

Getting bored with this now, your experiences in the world of Transport are definitely much different to mine.
I also try (and hopefully succeed) in doing a good job, and I am also helpful to other drivers, being that I am old school, and hey, afaik I am respected as well, I have deffo had no signs or comments to the contrary to date anyway.

I reckon if my boss came and said I had been accused of abuse and/or bullying I would light heartedly tell him to ■■■■ off, and I am 99.9% sure he would laugh back and support me as he knows my nature and ways after 6 years there.

I assume rightly or wrongly, you have only worked at one co.
I have not, I have had the same said type experiencies working for both UK, Netherlands and Belgian based firms, I have also owned my own firm many years ago. The firm I am at today is rife with teasing and banter, we all have a laugh…try it sometime mate, it makes the week go faster, trust me.

We will just have to agree to differ and knock it on the head in a friendly (inoffensive) way eh?
Good luck in what you are doing mate, but DO try and lighten up.ffs.

And you are slightly wrong anway, Get it right ffs :imp: …Clacks for driving, Cowboy boots with the lumberjack shirt to achieve the true cool trucker look :sunglasses: .
I have never had an aversion to looking a complete knob head

“…false impression that agency workers are given stick…”

It’s not false. That’s WHY they get the stick. Because they have a limp, and need one.

May years ago I used to go for the Lumberjack shirt and rigger boot look.

You could go for Dealer Boots and a Scania jacket and get the Tang look. :open_mouth:

I had to look up Tang yesterday after listening to the song I posted.

When i was growing up as a child i was given the nickname spud by my parents on account of my potato shaped head.

Should i sue for distress and hurt feelings?

I must have been through all these bloody stereotype phases, the Scania jacket and dealer boots describe me perfectly 10 years ago
I’m a bit like the late great David Bowie, I keep changing my image to keep fresh.
Might go for the Eddie Izzard look next, and get in touch with my feminine side. Got the eyeliner, nail polish and stilettoes on order as we speak, do you wanna buy a pair of second hand Clint Eastwood cowboy boots size 11?

Clearly we now have a new ‘Why’ topic, i just googled Scania dealers boots.

FFS BeakFreak. You owe me an Eccles cake.

I just dropped mine on the carpet laughing, and Mrs B hasn’t [zb]ing done the vacuuming.

From now on…you are Mr Potato head. Will someone please post a clip of Mr Potato head off Toy Story please?

So you didn’t google the ‘Eddie Izzard look’ and thought that may be worth a comment then :open_mouth:

I deserve a prize; I’ve actually worked with a limper who met all the below criteria…
He limped.
Claimed the agency suited his lifestyle.
Lived with elderly parents and an unmarried sister. (I heard banjos)
Talked endless ■■■■■■■■ about boring subjects. Mostly his brother and his brothers’ bouncy castle hire business.

Do I win a Driver Hire umbrella? :grimacing:

Holy [zb] folks

There is a NEW accessory for the limper. I have noticed it now and again, but it is on the increase. The bag on wheels has been adopted by the temp brigade. I have seen it with my very own mince pies!!

Sat in the cab reading the paper, when I heard this sort of ’ rumbling noise '. Looked up and some agency knob trundles past, hi-viz done up properly, and pulling a bloody tiny suitcase on wheels. WTF are these people playing at?

Care in the community obviously Mr Beaver, got to keep Mr Teddy dry as according to limpers that’s the only decent conversation they get,as us full timers are a miserable lot lol :grimacing:

Limpers! Great! It’s just a word. Even the insecure full timers (no, I don’t mean all full timers) have no idea what it’s about!

I’ve said this for a while, an agency driver is laughing if they aren’t desperate for work, and they can work when it suits them. Higher hourly rates, and the ability to just say no when they don’t fancy it, so the driver has control.

On the other hand, if an agency driver is desperate for work, and they have to get as much in as they can, in order to live, the boot is on the other foot. They have to take everything the agency offers, and if the agency doesn’t ring, they don’t pay their bills that week. Then the agency has control.

A lot of the directly-employed drivers I see dress questionably, and I must say that the only agency dead-giveaway is if the have a hi-vis vest with the agency logo on, or if for a particular firm, the drivers all wear corporate gear, and a particular driver isn’t, they must be agency.

I’ve seen a few Stobart trucks with a peculiar-looking characters behind the wheel, wearing a Tapout-style tracksuit, baseball cap and hi-vis vest at the wheel, who I can only presume are agency drivers, unless Stobarts have drastically relaxed their uniform requirements.

I have to admit, since learning of the word “limper”, I chuckle to myself when I see anyone with a limp. At first, I thought it was a mistake on auto-correct, and it should have been “limpet”, but then I wondered what relevance an aquatic snail has to one’s employment status. An agency driver has no allegiance, and take what they can get, so some sort of lone, opportunistic animal would be a better nickname: I like the idea of a “badger” as a better name. A “sloth” could be a fat, slow agency driver. A “cougar” could be a female agency driver. A “polecat” could be for the Eastern European agency drivers possibly?
