I think ours are near to 25 K and they do 4 on 4 off.
It’s 20k a year better than being on the dole.

I bet there’s people out there earning that being on the dole
I was a night shunter for 2 year, didnt have a fancy terberg either. It was an old clapped out scania exhaust smoke used to pish in threw the gear housing. Had to do 10-12 movements an hour disnae sound a lot for the terberg crew but i’ll tell you thats a lot of legs
Pishing rain, pitch black but i kinda enjoyed it. Tell you one thing i can reverse my way out a eye of a needle nowadays and i put all down to shunting.
Im trained on the terberg in work but i just cant get my head round it the mirrors are terrible lucky if i could 10-12 movements in it!
Only time ive ever dropped one on its knees is when i was a shunter, wasnt even busy probably 06.45 with 15 minutes left of shift and i got a call on the radio and my phone rang just totally broke my concentration, boom trailer on deck!

25k for 4 on 4 off doesnt sound bad,at least if you did a shift/2 extra youd still have a good few days off

quite right, but im more comparing it with drivers wages, seems alot less[which i why there all going back out on road i guess]

I was in a terberg the other week at a place in Huddersfield and I was the same as you with the mirrors. I think it’s cause they stick out too far. When you look in the mirror it looks like you’re reversing straight but in actual fact you’re not. After about 10-15 shunts I’d sort of got the hang of it but the idea that you if you can drive a tractor unit cab then you can also drive a terberg shunt tug is just bollox. They are nothing like each other and drive completely differently. It’s nothing that you can’t pick up with time and practice but tbh I think I could do the job quicker with an FM12.

ours were, till there pay was cut by 5k[so im led to believe],now theyd all much rather be out on road
Our early and late shunters do 5 ten hour shifts a week and both get the same salary as us drivers£30k pa,the early ones a right lazy ■■■■■■■ and wont do ■■■■ all to help anyone and that ■■■■■■ most of the drivers off that he gets paid the same as us and the late one is solid gold and works hiss ■■■ off.
The late one will go out and do a couple of drops to help a driver out ,but the early one wont and if he had to go back on the road it would kill him.
my old man is a shunter. He is happy now, 6am to 6pm, drives one of the spare wagons in the yard, home everynight, does 10 trailers a day at the very most. very most! some people might think its a bit boring but he has done years and years of handballing kegs of beer on and off drays all day, he is relaxing before retiring now!
As a rookie class 1 licence holder, I would like to get into shunting to improve my confidence with reversing. I did the test reverse first time but only because it’s the same ■■■■■■■■ repeated a 100 times, they just let us trial and error till we started getting it. can’t say I understand the finer points.
So would it be the usual catch 22, no you can’t shunt because you can’t reverse, just like no you can’t drive until you’ve got 2 years experience.
Only one reason to be a shunter…too much of a ■■■■■ to be a proper lorry driver
But seriously, why not, it’s about the only job in transport with fixed hours, no traffic jams, no driver’s waiting room BS to listen to, you stay fit jumping in and out the cab all day long. Comparable wages if you get the right job (same as driving) I can’t see a downside really

And you have to be a ■■■■■■ It’s in the job description!
Those who can, drive. Those who can’t, shunt.
When I worked at Royal mail, when a new driver has passed their test they were put on shunting for a week with a shunter. About the only good idea they had!
