Why would a company want you to become a o/d

if you dont try youll never know will you,i could carry on for the next 30 yrs as a company driver earning £7.00 p.h,or i could take a RISK[your words] and succeed or maybe fail,i believe i will succeed,by hard graft, but if i dont its not the end of the world[15 k to a lot] is,im lucky or maybe unlucky in that my parents died and left me a property that was worth a lot of money,£15 k is not to be sniffed at,but it never was my money in a sense, its wouldnt make a massive dent in what ive been left.
my own money would not get touched, just a perportion of what i was left.
that alternative is buy a new kitchen, car etc, etc, its a risk that could turn £15k into ziltch, but eventually, that car, kitchen, holiday will be worth ziltch,if it was my savings ,id think twice, its not ,its not putting my house etc at risk ,so if i could, which i cant,id go for it,i dontb want regrets, and there are folks out there whove succeded though hard graft, hopefully ill be one of them

Oh dear…

Okay I’m done with this thread. I don’t understand why people ask questions and want advice yet when their questions are answered and advice is given they tell people they are wrong. If they already have all the answers then why bother [zb] asking in the first place? :unamused:   Should’ve known better : author = ady1. Nuff said.

and you call me a baby, the 1 st time you dont hear what you want to hear you chuck your DUMMY out the pram and start roaring :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

Clearly you have reading issues so I’ll repeat it in extra large font for you :

no they havent lost a contract, that depot[department] has lost 2 million in 4 months[if the rumours true],so see theres still the work there too do,just has to be done at the right price,as for sorry we dont need you theres no work,as i say the works gar, they wont say it,theyve gar it

FFS if they have lost all that money in that short time, how an earth do you expect them to keep you earning ?

The problem with being tied into them is that they only let you earn what they want you to, any company that employs subbies (in all industries not just transport) will make sure they have enough people to cover the peak times but just show them enough carrot to keep them tied in in the quiet times.

If you had your own truck you could at least find some better work if they go quiet and keep yourself busy earning. This I fear is a recipe for disaster. If you spend your 15k on this business you might want to draw another 15k down so when its quiet you will have a nice kitchen to sit in :open_mouth:

This is the bit I don’t get. If you’re dedicated to doing work for one customer (Stobarts in this example), whether or not you succeed is actually very little to do with you and almost entirely to do with decisions that you have no say in. They will find the work for you and tell you the rates, you will have little or no choice (other than “take it or leave it”) as to what you do. You will presumably have to buy a specific truck and they will probably provide the finance for it too. You will be buying diesel on fuel cards they supply at prices they decide. What exactly will be your input that decides if you succeed or not?

Ask Repton, he has done it properly and is in his early years, a truck he can afford, with a trailer that he can drop off and go onto other more profitable work if it is offered. If Britain start another war in Libya, Wards of Malton will get much busier with the Westler Hamburger contract, can you drop your Stobbie trailer and go and pull a fridge for Wards or Westlers direct. Paul can.

You lot need to stop holding me up as an example of the right way to do it! I had better not mess it up or you’ll all look silly… That said, I obviously agree with what what you’re saying or I wouldn’t have done it this way myself.

On a pedantic point… Wards lost the Westlers job to House of James at Elvington a couple of years ago. It’s OK though, I know the TM at HoJ too as I used to do a lot of agency driving for them

Your running costs and hopefully profits will be much closer to the truth than the Motor Transport cost tables that undoubtedly Stobart accountants will use to draw up a perfect business plan for the victims, (sorry prospects)

House of James, was that Flowers or White Rose Transport?

Fair old run from rural Malton to House of James for work. :open_mouth: Unless HOJ has moved from the Brid road.

Does this mean while sat in tesco waiting room I’m going to get a stobbie driver telling me it’s his own truck but he earns so much he only has to work 2 days a week.

my indicators do point to this, but it will only be for a span of 5 years maxium, theyll then be on a sun bed by the side of a pool telling the holiday makers how there self made millionaires,be carefull ,jealousy can eat away at you :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation: :exclamation:

HoJ are a medium sized privately owned firm based next to the Air Museum at Elvington. I think they’ve got something in the region of 25 units and 60 trailers (plus a few 18 and 7.5 tonners as they’re a Palletline member). They’ve grown a lot in recent years with big contract wins at Mckechnie’s at Stamford Bridge, C&D Foods at Driffield and most recently Westlers at Amotherby (near Malton). All of those contracts involve a lot of warehousing as well as the haulage element.

I don’t know if I will do any work for them as they don’t at the moment sub any work out on a traction basis and I don’t have a curtainsider, plus for the next 6 months I’m going to be flat out on bulk work anyway. I have done a lot of agency driving for them over the past 6 or so years though and I know the lads and the work pretty well.

White Rose Transport are a completely different company based on the A64 just outside York. I think they also do the transport for Johnsons of Whixley who are a big plant nursery on the A59 between Harrogate and York.

Ady I’m not jealous at all was just taking the pee. Seriously I wish you well. I love hearing the od tales and how they are doing.
Personally it’s just a day job to me don’t even think my nights out have reached double figures in 11 years.
