Why work???

Spent 32 years of my life working and decided to do my lgv test, a big outlay if I can work the finances to go for cat c+e as well. It seems that I needn’t have bothered and just signed on the dole for a while as job centres are now paying for both tests :open_mouth: no offence to anyone that takes up the offer as why wouldn’t you, but I graft hard to pay for this and it just annoys me.

Was a thread on this recently

PS It probably annoys the unemployed we make threads about it :open_mouth:

But i think you have to be on the dole for at least 6 months? I would rather put it on a 0% credit card and do it myself straight away.

As would I, can get my head around dole paying for cat c to get someone in work but really don’t understand why the need to follow up with c+e.

Spent a few months on the dole as an itinerant youth… worst time of my life, hated it.

I should imagine there are some sly politicking going on behind this move. Get someone a licence, get them on ad-hoc agency work, no longer unemployed, no longer a bad statistic for HMG.

I knew i shouldn’t have clicked on the forum tonight…newsflash govt lackeys ■■■■ taxpayers money up the wall shocker, invest several thousands of pounds in training, but only for those who managed not to find a job for 6 months, brilliant! well done Tarquin an excellent use of resources.

Now what could possibly go wrong with that… :unamused:

NURSE…more medication please.

Perhaps they should only be allowed to apply for pallet network rigid work then we would only have proper jobs to apply for

Seriously though it should be on a payback scheme, means tested of course, more you earn more you pay back, but the biggest problem is the fact that some will be forced to do the training and won’t care about passing, wasting instructors time and patience, not to mention the money it costs to train them. I’m for and against it but only if it is done properly

Totally agree students have to pay back for their training. which was £5000 a year. (Up to £9000 a year now).

C and C+E can cost upwards of £2500 without retests. So, seems fair the applicant should pay it back.

Agreed! I still pay back student loan

When I was saving for my cat c I worked for the council mon-fri and I also got myself a 16 hr contract in a supermarket on Saturdays and Sundays… It makes my ■■■■ boil!

They should be at least made to pay it back, it’s a joke…

When I took my first C test, they had a guy come in from somewhere else needing to use an auto because he failed on a manual, this was his 7th attempt! Still failed but the job centre were footing the bill.

I have taken up the offer of the lgv licence from the jobcentre after being unemployed for 3 months and all of the people I learnt with have places all lined up around the Swansea, Bridgend, Llanelli areas so no agencies are involved.

We have all had introductions with the potential employer and once we have the licences back we start full time work.

Wow unemployed for 3 months & given a freebie, can’t blame you for taking it and we’ll done but astonishing would be an understatement!

A few years ago there was talk of the jobcentre providing help with funding for the licence.

Led me up the garden path a bit tho. They paid for my digital tacho card. Then were offering half of the cost of the lessons/test etc but nothing came of it as they wanted me to find an employer who was willing to state they would offer me a job upon getting the licence.

I rang around a few employers etc but got fobbed off with needing experience etc.

This time we have the employer already lined up and everything paid for.

I had my hazard, theory and cpc test all done on the same day in Swansea, then had the 5 days course, failed the class 2 test, had 3 days experience at the employers the following week. Test passed the week after. Week after that done the module 4. Now onto the class one this week. So its been quite demanding.

Been quite demanding has it?
Maybe not as demanding as a heap of us here who have been working full time and had to fit the training, and tests in around full time work and family commitments as well as having to find the few grand to pay for it. Y’know what, I don’t care if this offends, it’s out n out wrong! This country does my swede in.

To be honest, if giving someone the chance to take the HGV test allows them to get back into work or gets them into a job for the first time where they can provide for themselves and the families then its a good thing. What annoys me is the Job Centre giving this chance to people who have zero interest in it and will never use it. When I was on JSA I was offered security guard training… why I had to ask them because I’m 5ft8 and nerdy/weedy as hell. I’d be useless as a security guard, I’m not that much better as a lorry driver mind you :grimacing: Its the same thing as asking someone with 30 years experience in mechanical engineering to go stack shelves at Poundland for 16 hours a week. To them, if you get a job then you are off their books. They don’t give a toss what job you go into.

This, basically - nothing wrong with wanting to better your situation and being aided. This helps society as a whole and eventually pays back with less people taking dole money and more people contributing in taxes and NI.

That said, I agree this training should be given to those who show a genuine desire and aptitude for the role.

And why vocational training can not be funded through repayable loans/grants similar to higher education is beyond me. Sends out the wrong message.
