Why is finding work so hard?

To 00HGV1 your best bet as other drivers have said is the agencies but if you are that desparate for work have you considered moving or at least working away from home from week to week in order to find work? I went as far as France!! If you can, register with agencies that are based around big distribution sites like Magna Park, Lutterworth or Trafford Park, for example. I know its not ideal but sometimes needs must, also depends on your family life commitments etc. Also are you prepared to work nights, weekends, Bank Holidays? It aint easy mate I’ve been there, been at the job four years now and for the first two of them I was constanly on agency work. Also make sure you have a didgi card and register with an unbrella scheme like NOVA or BAR10 because if you are travelling any distance to a job you can claim expenses (mileage allowance) for petrol to and from a job, meal and clothing allowance, it all comes off what tax you will be paying leaving you with more in your wage packet. You WILL find work, hope my two pennys worth helps, keep possitive!!

And you lose all but £5 if you do under 16 hours and you cannot earn more than 16 X the minimum wage…

If you do one odd day, lets say 10 hours at £8 per hour then that is a total of £80 + £5 from dole =
£85 - less travel expense say £10 for the day = total of £75 = WOW - just made £10 over the dole amount and have to go through loads of hassle as well…

I thought they only gave you the fiver if you earned LESS than the dole amount of £60.50. As soon as you earn over £60.50 a week they don’t give you anything and take your council tax benefit off you.

Become a LGV driving instructor, apparently any numpty can do it, or so I’ve heard :open_mouth:  :open_mouth:

Ain’t that right ROG

You must have good hearing

To ROG, its all in prespetcive mate, obviously you need the work to make it viable, if the lad gets a start with some work on agencies and he’s doing plenty of travel he’ll have to way his options up, it just that an option.Like I said it worked out for me when I was on agency but your right in the respect it doesnt pay to run your wages through a scheme like that unless you do at least two three days a week with them and you are claiming plenty back because of the fees to use the umbrella scheme. Just a bit of friendly advise to the lad which CAN be helpful depending on his circumstances.
