Why dont i have D1 on my license

I past B post 1997 i get that people who past pre 1997 have it, i understand grandfather rights etc

What i dont get! On passing the C+E test having the ability to drive the highest class vehicle on the road - why dont they chuck in D1 for good measure. Im not asking to drive a bus just a frigin minibus FFS

Honest to god there are countries when you pass the C+E you get your bus licence with it, Australia being one country IIRC

Didn’t even realise this till today when they where making travel arrangements for a football tournament in work.

Its got its benefits this time as i’ll be able to get absolutely ■■■■■■ out my nut but i could have needed it.

Well it’s easy there profit to be made, though a test fee , theory and practical. Not to mention all the DCPC stuff too!

If you still have a burning desire to drive a minibus, there may be an exemption you can use:

I’ve not tried it myself, but came across it at the weekend when trying to help a pal in similar circumstances.

In truck terms yes but I’m sure coach drivers may disagree!

I have it, then again, I was a bus driver. Get this though…

First bus train you in an auto which gives you D and D1 restricted to auto only. That lets you drive any auto bus/coach inc bendi buses at 60ft. What you’re not allowed to drive however is a ■■■■■■ van minibus if it has a manual box. Stupid or what

I hold the C as well as a D licence ,I drove my daughters pre school trip before I had the bus licence it was legal as I worked voluntarily.I see know reason why a class c holder cant drive a bus and vice versa The test is the same IE manouvers and reversing and braking when I took my tests it was the same examiners.

Of course the Cat D licence is higher - D is higher up the alphabet than C is
If its any consolation, I have C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D, D1, D+E, D1+E :stuck_out_tongue:

You can throw all the letters of the alphabet you want but lorries are the daddy’s, if you can drive a transit you can drive a bus.7

Lets no get into a bus argument DAF you will lose on Trucknet :smiling_imp:

And it’s pretty daft that someone with a D licence (who passed car after 1997) can’t even drive a Merc Sprinter van (C1).

I heard a rumour a few years ago that the EU were thinking of throwing in C1 for free with D, and D1 with C. But clearly that was deemed far too sensible by the Euro-elite and so the idea was killed off.

Yes that maybe that if you can drive a Transit then you can drive a bus (though I disagree) ) but can you smoothly drive a bus/coach full of old people, thats the difference between a truck and a coach/bus, its the same test but you have drive a hell of a lot smoothly on the bus test, pallets of apples wont complain about your driving, a bus load of old people will…

Maybe you should go for more categories, that way you would have even more job choices to change every few weeks. :stuck_out_tongue:

you need to drive smoothly with certain loads on trucks too, could be a big creamy mess back there !

livestock is another one

Something to do with stopping an appropriate distance from the kerb that your C+E training could not possibly have taught you. Saw it all in a driving theory book so I know it’s true.

But more than anything, it means you have to splash out more wonga to upgrade your licence and keep the wheels of commerce well oiled.

Thought about doing my motorcycle licence and my tracked vehicle licence many times then I’ll have a full set

Holders of a full category B (car) driving licence may drive any of the vehicles listed below:

-a passenger carrying vehicle manufactured more than 30 years before the date when it is driven and not used for hire or reward or for the carriage of more than 8 passengers
-a minibus with up to 16 passenger seats provided the following conditions are met:
i. the vehicle is used for social purposes by a non-commercial body but not for hire or reward
ii. the driver is aged 21
iii. the driver has held a car (category B) licence for at least 2 years
iv. the driver is providing the service on a voluntary basis
v. the minibus maximum weight is not more than 3.5 tonnes or 4.25 tonnes including any specialist equipment for the carriage of disabled passengers
vi. if the driver is aged 70 or over, is able to meet the health standards for driving a D1 vehicle

that’s called national distress, come to think about it i would have prefered to have been moving cattle rather than the ‘animals’ i had to transport.

here’s a funny one.

i passed my car test after '97 so was limited tomaximum of 3.5 ton van and/or 750kg trailer

passed my C1, still only 750kg trailer

passed C1+E, upto 6 ton trailer, maximum train weight of 12 ton

passed C but only a 750 kg trailer!

passed D coach, bus and even bendy bus because that isn’t a trailer

passed my C+E 3 months ago and got GIVEN my D+E, i’ve never even hitched a trailer to a coach but i can drive one!

it don’t make any sense, but i’m not complaining. i’ve ticked the boxes i want for the minute.

Cos the test for C+E uses a bigger trailer than D+E, therefore if you can drive an artic you can drive a bus and trailer… Besides, all i’ve ever seen is a little loadlugger type trailer behind coaches… can you get bigger ones?
