As someone who has had an LGV license since the 70’s and someone who takes pride in their driving it really annoys me what I see almost everyday on a road where I live.
It is an A road with a national speed limit of 60 for cars and 40 for trucks. It is usually quite busy and there are not many opportunities to overtake.
What I see on a regular basis is a car traveling along at maybe 50 or 55 with a truck glued to his back bumper.
Now as we all know there is no way the truck has the power to pass the car so why sit so close behind. Why not back off and leave a proper gap?
What is wrong with these drivers? They are the ones that get us such a bad name.
This problem is usually created by the car driver. They don’t keep a constant speed, They slow down and put themselves in front of the trucks bumper.

does that mean that the truck driver doesn’t have to slow down to compensate?

I suppose it’s up to the driver. What would you do?
I also noticed a few times now that when i am doing a overtake on a duel and i am along side the lorry i am overtaking, and bear in mind i am doing 52mph on the limiter i notice the driver then looks in his mirror and pulls away from me leaving me in lane 2. This has been done a number of times now and i thought it was just car drivers who do it.
Its all in the way a driver thinks and changing a persons way of thinking is the hardest thing to do
A person has to be open to change for things to get better

I take it from your comments you are a perpetrator.

Your spot on there. To many drivers with bad attitudes with no consideration for anyone but themselves.

No. i’m a scorpio.
Reading posts about car drivers and their behaviour makes me think that there is not a lot of difference between them and lorry drivers. There are good and bad in each group and I doubt if bad lorry drivers improve their standards when they get into a car.

That sounds as though you’re looking for a reason to excuse your own driving.

Far from it. I’m simply stating that what appears to be the lorry driver playing at silly buggers, isn’t always the way that it appears.
I’ve tried to overtake these people for them to speed up and leave me hanging, they then slow down and end up too close for comfort. it’s at this point that i may pull over and have a brew.

They probably recognized you

Without doubt, if I could not pass, I would slow down and maintain a decent distance.
I may not like doing that but there are very few circumstances that you cannot be blamed for running into theback of someone.
The car in front going too slow is not one of them.
The lorryist is most likely going along on the limiter or with c.c. engaged, car pilots vary their speed all the time so often find trucks bearing down on them.
It’s amazing how many car drivers can’t drive along a stretch of road without having to brake every time there is a car coming the other way and also people can’t look in their mirrors without resting their foot over the brake pedal as well.
There should just be separate roads throughout the country so we don’t have to mix with the ■■■■■■

And you would rather tailgate than slow down? Varying your speed is not bad driving but tailgating most certainly is.

He didn’t say he would tailgate, He was simply pointing out that the lorry driver isn’t the only one to blame in such circumstances.
And varying your speed is far from good practice. Fuel consumption will increase when varying your speed.

Do you mean normal truck drivers or just tipper drivers?
Thank you Sewerat,Why cant the people who are driving light and nimble vehicles not proceed in a predictable manner? Its ridiculous that we have to plan overtaking manouvres at all.I met a lady who had been stopped by the police ,they asked her why she was driving so slowly, her reply was “because I am not in a hurry”.New drivers should be taken out in a commercial vehicle as part of their training to give them an understanding of what we do.
