Why does this happen?

As someone who has had an LGV license since the 70’s and someone who takes pride in their driving it really annoys me what I see almost everyday on a road where I live.
It is an A road with a national speed limit of 60 for cars and 40 for trucks. It is usually quite busy and there are not many opportunities to overtake.
What I see on a regular basis is a car traveling along at maybe 50 or 55 with a truck glued to his back bumper.
Now as we all know there is no way the truck has the power to pass the car so why sit so close behind. Why not back off and leave a proper gap?
What is wrong with these drivers? They are the ones that get us such a bad name.

Do you mean normal truck drivers or just tipper drivers?

yeah thats cause tipper drivers are a bunch of wild tear about arses who wreak havoc across the country at break neck speeds, who dont care about anything or anyone or any of the laws as long as they get there next load on/off just too line there pockets with cold hard cash.

There aren’t good and bad lorry drivers and good and bad car drivers. Just good drivers and bad drivers.

There are good and bad car drivers but ive found the majority are crap, they have no conception what is going on around them.
They drive along doing 50mph then all of a sudden they will just slow down to 30mph and then speed up again completely oblivious to whats behind them and thats dangerous.

I also noticed a few times now that when i am doing a overtake on a duel and i am along side the lorry i am overtaking, and bear in mind i am doing 52mph on the limiter i notice the driver then looks in his mirror and pulls away from me leaving me in lane 2. This has been done a number of times now and i thought it was just car drivers who do it.

They probably recognized you

Or the smell from the cab

I wasn’t,t going to mention that!!

No I was not referring to tipper drivers in fact we do not see many in our area but I know what you mean.I remember them from my years driving round London.A lot of Irish drivers drove tippers around London.Don’t know if it the same now.
It is just normal trucks with idiots at the wheel!

The lorryist is most likely going along on the limiter or with c.c. engaged, car pilots vary their speed all the time so often find trucks bearing down on them.

And you would rather tailgate than slow down? Varying your speed is not bad driving but tailgating most certainly is.

S

He didn’t say he would tailgate, He was simply pointing out that the lorry driver isn’t the only one to blame in such circumstances.
And varying your speed is far from good practice. Fuel consumption will increase when varying your speed.

Its better than front bumper consumption increasing when the idiot brakes.

Yes, the car driver can be responsible for varying speed. The ONLY person responsible for keeping a safe separation is the vehicle behind.

Are you observing this as they pass you or when your following them? Although I agree some drivers seem to tailgate excessively you do get these scenarios where the lighter vehicle in front backs off the throttle and slows immediately, whereas the heavier vehicle also backs off but the the weight keeps the momentum going and they get close, not tailgating but in anticipation that the vehicle in front will speed up again, opening the gap.

Obviously you should back off if the gap is too close but when your running 44 tonne slowing constantly and then speeding up its not ideal.

I often wonder when reading through this board, how many drivers actually run at 44t regularly.

You wonder about the weight? I just wonder how many drive

Lorry drivers don’t do it from any desire to ■■■■ off other people. It’s very simply explained.
Lead or follow, just get out of the bloody way.

Hello I am observing this as they pass in the other direction. It is quite clear what is happening and no the light vehicle has not backed off.Yes maybe in some cases but not the ones I have seen.
The problem is that maybe the car driver is quite happy to sit at 50 but the truck driver wants to be flat out but instead of being a good driver and backing off he decides to intimidate the car driver by tailgating.I know it is annoying if you are in a hurry but these idiots just give us all a bad reputation.

Yes oman…got it in one!

sewerat:
This problem is usually created by the car driver. They don’t keep a constant speed, They slow down and put themselves in front of the trucks bumper.

I’m staggered that any so-called professional lorry driver could think that.

Is your username a dyslexic anagram of “ere’s a tw at”■■

threewheelsonmywagon, yes I felt exactly the same when I read it.The guy claims to have his own business and employs drivers who he trains for 3 to 5 days.
What a scary thought that is with an attitude like his!

I agree, it is a dangerous practice, i am trying to type this whilst up someones bumper, hes only doing 52, but thats ok cos hes got a sticker saying so, but some idiot is right up my arse, and its difficult trying to write, and look in the mirrors at the same time…give us a break, and you in front, get a move on…oh sorry ! you cant…

You have a very weird sense of humour. There are people injured and killed every week by these idiots but you make fun of it!
