Why attractive young women become truck drivers?

ETS lamenting the job in one way or another is nothing new.

Lucy, don’t do yourself down, you are still attractive. Don’t forget, women age like wine. I know the title of this thread is about attractive young women but in the absence of any of them posting on the thread, as an attractive middle aged woman, new to professional driving, I have to say I’m impressed with the backlash to this post. It certainly reflects my personal experience.

Just tonight, out with a group of girls I got asked “but isn’t it very male dominated?” Yes it is, I replied, but working mainly with men (I’m a driver but a lot of my jobs take me into the construction industry as well) is very straightforward, they take you on merit, pure and simple. You are there to do a job like they are, and if you do that job, and with the right attitude, their attitude is “fair play”. I neither care nor know what they say about me out of my hearing. If I don’t make my gender an issue, they don’t.

Why do men want to be gynaecologists? Why does anyone want to do anything? Isn’t coming across the unexpected part of the rich fabric of life?

^^^ This. In my experience women truck drivers have more mechanical sympathy than most men. Women who do the job, do so because they want to, ergo, do a better job than the blokes who merely see it as an occupation.
As for the poster whinging about the young girl struggling with a reverse, show me the bloke who was born with the ability.

So do you get a lot of blokes hitting on you quite often? How do you deal with that?

I’m not aware I’ve ever been hit on. I’m 49 and happily married with two children so my energy is not exactly inviting hits.

I was, when I was younger. You soon learn how to deal with it. My favourite line was always to ask if they’d looked in a mirror recently… :sunglasses:

ETS:
They could make the same or more ££ working the pub or waiting table or doing whatever easier/better paying job (incl. tax free tips and gifts from random simps) but they chose the driving career…why? Do they enjoy the immense never ending attention at work and every place they go to deliver/collect? Every company nowadays seems to have one and a bunch of up to 65 year olds drooling over them. There’s one at our place 2 drivers nearly went into a fight (and still don’t talk to each other months later) over who was going to be the ‘‘trainer’’ accompanying her during her 1st week on class 1.

Nevermind the preferential treatment they get at work instantly getting a full time contract and day shift and whichever days/runs/start times they desire. Can’t send them out alone at night if they say ‘‘I don’t feel safe’’ understandably. It’s pathetic on the part of TM/planners :unamused: and that’s not sexist at all apparently when it’s benefiting someone because of their gender/looks but I will be labelled sexist for pointing it out.

It’s one thing being ‘‘nice’’ to someone because they’re young and inexperienced at least initially until they settle in but when it’s a long term trend it’s so blatantly obvious that this goes beyond just common courtesy.

IF women can earn more ££ working in a pub or waiting tables,WHY are you driving for a living.nothing to stop you applying for a job to get more money.
Where I worked the women did exactly the same work as the male driver same shifts same early starts for the same money, any different would have been descrimation

From Motor Transport

Female HGV drivers aged 20-29 come out on top at passing their test with almost 68% bossing the practical exam, according to research by Pallet-Track.

Its analysis of government data showed that women in this age category gained the highest practical pass rate in the country every year between 2010 and 2022.

It said that while women make up only a small proportion of HGV drivers, 67.9% of 20-29-year-olds successfully passed their practical test in 2021-2022, compared to 63% of men in the same age category.

The overall pass rate for all drivers taking a practical HGV test in 2021-2022 was 58.7%.

So perhaps it’s just that those who choose to do the job can do it better than average.
Many of the truck manufacturers employ female driver trainers.

To add to this, my instructor stated that his female student drivers doing C+E tended to pick things up quicker than the men, and had better pass rates.

Good at passing tests?

I am giving you a taste of the reality test to pass:

Look for the right spot to park up and sleep overnight minimizing the chance to be assaulted in your own cab, keeping a low profile trying to be seen the least not to entice predators.

I do not recall women doing international; only one, she did not look in good spirits, nor her motor.

You need to know the jungle out there, it ain’t for everyone.

I know several. One is now driver trainer/press fleet manager for Daf Trucks. In fact, I did France myself, briefly.

that certainly supports the point I meant for you all to infer, they don’t last long on the line, nobody hacks well being permanently an obvious lone target.

A desk with a bombastic rank tag suits better the pretentious aims of the meritless. It gets too primal of an environment to navigate out there, in the wild, unprotected, just by yourself. If you get on well with it, you are doing well at a vagabond lifestyle, nothing worth of glamour, to show off or least to brag about (EDIT)

EDIT: I read this very reply of mine again, just after finding out there is an Euro-drivers subforum and peeking in it. As a result I am editing and deleting all that stuff about handling the excretion of bodily waste and the prostitutes. It was just a snapshot of a broader reality, not a fair representation of the whole per se.
Despite the fact of knowing first hand the topic, I also feel I might not be welcome providing details that tarnish the image of an activity (international or continental transport) in which I am no longer a player

Pick yer knuckles up off the floor mate, you’re damaging the new parquet

Ah, of course.
A “reality” that was “broad enough” to include things that aren`t real.

You really should get a job as a speech writer for…
the list is too long

We have one or two attractive women at our place and of course they get more attention because of that.
I learnt that women can be nasty to each othersometimes and there is a side to some women that they dont reveal to men.I only learnt this because my wife told me experiences she had in a all women work envoirement. So I can understand it if a woman works in a place mainly men,she doesnt have to put up with this nastiness, but then there is the disadvantage that she might not want this attention

Dear Fran, I just read your responses in the other thread about trips to France, and as they sound sound, I do not see why you souldn’t mean honesty in your statement here too.

I admit whores literally jumping in my cab only ever happened in Jonquera. You had to have your door locks down, otherwise they just came and wide-opened the passenger door and got on the steps to convey solicitation. 20 years ago, I have no idea of current affairs, true.

In UK I only recall now once being approached for some fun outside Tesco in Doncaster where you parked up and wait with chill delivery as Corby Chilled would get penalised for arriving 30’ earlier of allotted booking time.
I mean, a BJ is often welcome, though in broad daylight early in the afternoon my head was rather longing for an inexpensive hot meal at the Tesco canteen --yes, many years ago too, moderators should take my posts to the rope and sheeting -like threads.

Back to the thread topic: There’s more than steering the wheel to driving for certain type of assignments. Doing shifts in the UK doesn’t involve much of some of the extra considerations I tried to convey/remind and which were the more relevant to me at times (personal safety)

I lost 6 stone as a container driver, believe it or not. Deliberately, that is. It was easy - I just set off for the week with a set amount of food and no means of buying any more.
