The thing is ZIFFY you said you hate ALL rigid drivers there is a high percentage of drivers on here who have and can drive any truck on the road and do you think that only rigid drivers don’t read the road,I would think the majority of drivers on this forum would have a good standard of driving and if not they are learning a lot from the variety of posts that are put on here.I would like to think that most lorry drivers on the road today would respect what profession we all do,for me the job is harder now than it used to be because the amount of traffic, limiters on trucks make us bunch, trucks that are limited a lot lower than others must be awful to drive making decisions when to overtake ect and drivers being pushed all the time to get here or there. It gets me when people like you look down on others,we all do the same thing we take something somewhere for someone and hopefully we get there and back without any hassle or worse.

I dont give a rats ■■■ if you feel a draw bar requires more skill or not, your still a glorified rigid, end of story. For me you are the bane of my life, and i know its not just me that you lot seem to pull out on, just as we overtake down hill, or whilst we’re goin up hill, just like the poxy know it all car driver.
Oh and before you say it, yes artic drivers do it as well, just not as often.
But then being a biker and artic driver i’m always gonna hate car drivers. especially those little [zb] that think they have the right to police the stretch of road i’m using.Your argument is going to look a bit stupid if they ever allow a six wheeler rigid to pull a 45 ft semi trailer using a drawbar dolly.Maybe that explains why so many artic drivers are against the idea here.

By the way I drove artics for (a lot) more years than I did drawbars and the only reason why the drawbar wasn’t faster than the artic was because it was a zb Merc 2534 limited to 90 kmh instead of something like a DAF 2800 without one.But the next time you try to overtake one going downhill just remember he could pull up a lot quicker than you without jacknifing assuming of course it’s a real one not a caravan type.

Dont read the press mate, and im not against anything being on the road, certainly wasnt aware of a 6 wheeled rigid pulling a 45ft trailer, feel a bit like a fair ground driver. would they also be governed by the same speeds or will they require a new limit? seeing as fair ground guys seem to be limited to 40 everywhere?
I’ll admit to being a bit less experienced than some, but what would you expect?
I have been driving (not just HGV) long enough to know there are plenty of idiots out there today. But also plenty of nice folks, cool trucks to look at etc etc, so I try to forget the negative and focus on the positive. Had a bit of a “to-do” on the M40 today, artic coming down sliproad, me locked into lane 1 by dawdler in a car…I was indicating to move over to let the artic out, I think he assumed I was going to go over, I couldn’t, had to slow down and he ended up using a bit of the hard shoulder. Even though he should have matched speed to come in behind me, I can’t blame him in full, I could have slowed down as well I suppose. Next time I probably will, thats called learning from experience. Maybe one day I too will think its all easy-peasy but right now it isn’t,for me anyway.
I think I also encoutered my first example of someone showing off. On the A10 in London, I spotted a silver foden tipper behind. I’m doing the 40 limit, he comes flying past, double-de-clutches down, and puts his engine brake on right alongside me. I must admit it sounded pretty good, but I wasn’t sure if he was challenging me to a race or something? (And I can double de clutch as well, it just doesn’t sound as impressive in my merc)

Tipper drivers eh?!
Thing is i have grown up in the industry, i served my apprenticeship, drove 1t vans, moved up gradually, so over the last 20 years i have hated rigids more and more. The only time i drove a rigid for a living was to do nights until an artic job came up. But because i was aware of the artics momentum, i knew no point in overtaking it going up hill knowing full well i could be in its was on the way back down the other side. I and certainly wouldnt pull out to overtake down hill with an artic doing the very same. But hey thats just me.
To be honest this reads like a load of rubbish to me, and i’ll guarantee i’m not the only one who read it and scratched his head. But anyway…rigid drivers are to scared to drive artics and you’re to scared to overtake in one downhill because of the, erm, momentum? And you wouldn’t overtake an artic going uphill either? I’m sure there’s a lot of us out there that have missed out on the type of apprenteship you where brought up with. Luckily !!

tell that to the ■■■■■■ of milk company driver on the B4030 this afternoon who forced me into the hedge, came round a blind bend on my side of the road, in the pouring rain, only self preservation, and sensible speed saved a messy end to both our days. although my mirror took the brunt of the trees, he knows the road, does he ■■■■, because if he did he would have known he’s not the only one on it ffs. problem is this happens more and more often. i know about making times and deliveries, and the worry of loosin your job, but your employer will also rather you be safe and the kit kept on the road, than run the risk of loosing money. we all know these times are down to office jockies who have absolutely know idea what the job is like, let alone the roads. And i also know some of these people but very few actually did the job, problem is they did it when limiters were set by the driver.
peace out

Ziffy just got owned
I’ve never had reason to drive a ‘drawskin’ vehicle. DrawBARS are a function on hammond organs not a 600cf with a smaller trailer than usual.
And no, I won’t be “drawn” into a conversation about who’s ‘cut’ and who’s not here!

Tipper drivers eh?!
Yep tipper drivers eh
As some of you know i work with Ziffy
Its easy to slag some one off but having see the damage inflicted on his truck by by a top of the range RIGID driver i can understand his feelings about them.
Also quite suprised at a moderator trawling back years of posts to bring up when he 1st started driving
Not sure that class 1 drivers are better than class 2 drivers, it’s 2 different skills. I started driving artics in the early 70’s and thats what I’m good at, put me in a rigid and I’d probably make a right pigs ear of the job.
Todays drivers have far less to do (ok, not hours wise), but trucks almost drive themselves, all the driver has to do is steer in the right direction. Having less to do probably accounts for boredom, and with boredom comes frustration, and that can lead to careless driving.
When I started out, if you had a problem you fixed it at the side of the road the best you could (it was part of the job), you carried a few tools and unless it was really serious you fixed it. Because of this more care was taken with the driving to ensure nothing broke.
Obviously with todays trucks and the computerised systems involved, they are less likely to breakdown. And if they do breakdown there’s not a lot you can do unless it’s something simple like a split hose, leaking airline or something equally basic.
Thats my thoughts on the matter of DWL’s, they’ve nothing better to do so they take risks.
Tiger.
Muckaway:
I’ve seen some stupid artic drivers in the last few days. Tends to be the visiting out of work grain hauliers in their pimped up Volvos and Scanias that can’t follow a simple one way system. Drive behind reversing quarry plant, tip on the wrong heap…Park infront of stockpiles for a break.
The classic (and most common) is tipping the trailer, then running to undo the tailgate.
That said, AP Bailey, Robinsons of Worcester, Rode Haulage, Barry Jeffrey, R.Adams and a few I can’t remember are totally spot on.
I’ll take that Mr Muckaway, much obliged Sir!!

Not harsh more like just from the point of view of someone who’s never actually driven a drawbar outfit.
The fact is it takes (a lot) more skill to drive (or at least reverse) a (real) drawbar outfit than an artic.
- 1 Carryfast…Sound’s like Ziffy Is talking out of his arse…
I don’t really believe I have just read 3 friggin pages of this drivel!!! I should really know better with this site but you live and learn as the saying goes.
The best drivers are those that work a week and go home without causing any damage, cus at the end of the day that will guarantee your wages! There will always be dicks on the road and if you anticipate and allow for them (cus they don’t know any different) we will always be happy - won’t we
Well the driver who’s got my lorry is nearing the end of a 3 month trial and has torn steps off, broken both mirrors and damaged bumper. First load today driver forgets to wind sheet in and excavator driver loads on top of it. Repair done late morning and coming off our tip, forgets to lower body, drives under whatever thousand volt cables are attached to pylons and bashes the height markers (candy poles).
Surely there comes a point where enough is enough even with a newbie?
