Who was in the Merchant Navy before hitting the road?

I ,ve noticed the odd remark that makes me think the poster had been to sea !!! I know a couple of lads who took up lorry driving after a stint in the MN myself included !! I think it must have been the relative freedom of the job !!..I just wonder how many of us regulars here fit that bill ■■

I guess "deckboypeggy " was one anyway !!

s going to register here as ship ahoytheresheblowsfishfingerkippers, but I thought it would make me stand out a bit.,anyhoooo looks like the cats over the yardarm and its after 8 bells now,so best go and get ■■■■■■■■■■■■ ■■■■■■■■ when I was in the war, actually I think it would be good if someone told some war tales…it would make a change from the usual drivvle,is this legal,i saw an angry truckie, whats agency work like, etc. come on Sinbad, gives some gossip.did you see any u boats? were you in the Baltic sea hammering ice off the focsle before you capsized,or were you in Australia steaming into Sidney.a pic or 3 of the more interesting stuff would be class…even a list of bag houses you got flung out of,or caught something nasty in would do for a start?? …slabber over. your turn now mate…ey

I was in the sas. Then drove for astrans. Then missed the herald at Zeebrugge. Then got drunk and married a ■■■■■■■ the Bilbao ferry. Then sold me spare. Then fiddled the Dkv for baccy. Then nicked a customs stamp in IRUN. Then went to Prato (one hit). Then bish boshed back to Macon. Then married a bird in the cabbage patch. Then got me washing done at victors. Then dumped the motor in dover. Sold another spare. Then had me own chair on the Pompey boat. Then knew the mush at st Omer (let me go).

Yep, 15 years in the Merchant Navy. Pantry Boy to Purser / Catering Officer. 1955 - 1970. Happy Days.

Hullo ‘backsplice’
Spans to the Bridge ? Do you know I can’t remember, or most likely never ever looked, it is after all a bit of a specialised subject, counting Bridga Spans, a bit like Train Spotting if you know what I mean. I will take a guess and say there were three. I should’ve counted them then, It would have been easy as I was in the nearest hut to the top of the Bank B2, and of course spent the last week there, as everybody did, sleeping on the Bed Deck of the Ship. With old Popeye in charge of things. While you were there picking up your load there, probably on the Docks, did you call into the Seamans Mission (Flying ■■■■■) to see Mark.

Well when i got there I was asked to count the spans …there was 21 at my time …the sneer was thats how many days I have left …new boy !!!
never loaded there but did deliver machinery many years later …it was all gone ■■?..I was in the hut at the top of the stairs it was C3 then
all the best … ps founder member of the TSVA (NSW)
