Who Remembers when your truck would do 70mph?

I must admit the only time I used to push the speed up was the occasional time on a friday afternoon and it was a case of getting back for the weekend or not…rest of the time I ran with the crowd at the accepted pace

First truck I ever went in was my old man’s FL6. The speedo went to 80mph and the rev counter to 3000rpm and he used to get both needles off the clock.

Imagine the fuel economy on that :grimacing:

Still used to get overtaken by F12s and Leylands though.

Would of got a bit more out of it if he pulled the hand throttle out
Edit . . was thinking of an F6 .Not as fast as my S plate Tm though.(16T 500 btw)

The FL6 had one too. Think it had throttle lock wrote on it.

i remember those  Scania 112 , Foden 4300, Renault G290, volvo FL7 , SA400 even an ERF EC12 etc, dont know if i’d want to go those speeds nowadays even if i could !, road surfaces are awfull & the trafic conditions do me head in as it is

How is it bad for engine if you are in angle gear?

If you mean neutral the gearbox won’t be exactly pleased about it and you’re using more fuel than being in gear.

Conor you are the clueless one when you knock a motor into neutral the engine drops back to tickover therefore using little or no fuel.As an old hand at the game having had a Foden top speed 48mph and long before limiters were heard of coming down any bank was mostly done in Aberdeen Overdrive ie Neutral. Eddie.

For years stuck on the wall behind a calendar we had the old mans only speeding ticket he ever got, ( he was secretly proud of it ) In our “new” F12 1986 6x2 tractor unit running bobtail back from Scotland on the old A74 having just picked it up from the Volvo factory in Irvine , he accepted the speed as 82mph from the boys in blue !
All I ever managed was 75 !
Now she struggles to hit 65 and sounds a bit rattley but has a couple of million K’s under her belt .

I drove a Scania P93m 6 wheeler with drag back in the early 90’s. It was on a D reg & all the rest of the fleet were on limiters but this didn’t have one.

It would do 70 when empty & around 64 when loaded. I’d like to see that now, I know the Irish drivers pass me at 60 now but 70 it was great!

I remember … It was last week  (Still does I hope).

I had a Merc on Federal Express /Matchbox contract and was told 'Bring your unit into Crick worshops tomorrow, they are fitting a limiter (60mph), I was gutted and drove like a nutter that day, I was stopped heading south past Trowel services by two cops in a Jaguar… “Do you know why we stopped you driver”
“Yes, speeding, I was having my last fling as they are fitting a 60mph limiter tomorrow”
The policeman laughed and said “Carry on and enjoy but be carefull”

The good old British motorway cops

I remember ‘Sonny’ or ‘Black Diamond’ as he was known on the CB, he drove for Carryfast and had a Scania, he was raving mad, stopped not far from Trowel also by two cops who knew him … everyone knew him
“Do you know how fast you were going Sonny ?”
“Err no Sir, I couldn’t tell because the needle was off the clock” (true story)

Who in their right mind, calls themselves “black diamond”?
